God’s existenceDraft · awaiting advisor review

Is there any good reason to believe God exists?

In short

Christians point to several lines of evidence that together make a strong case: that anything exists at all, that the universe had a beginning, that it is ordered and fine-tuned for life, that some things are truly right and wrong, and above all the life, death and resurrection of Jesus. None is a mathematical proof; together they show that belief in God is reasonable.

The Objection

There is no scientific evidence for God. The burden of proof is on believers, and philosophers have answered the classic arguments. Without evidence, the reasonable position is to withhold belief.

Put as its strongest advocates would put it.

The Christian Case

  1. Philosophical argument

Why is there something rather than nothing? Everything we observe depends on something else for its existence. Many philosophers, from Leibniz on, argue that this points to a being that exists necessarily, depending on nothing.

  2. Philosophical argument

Most cosmologists accept that the observable universe began in a hot, dense state about 13.8 billion years ago. Many argue that a beginning calls for a cause beyond the universe; others answer with models in which our universe is not the absolute beginning.

  3. Philosophical argument

Some things seem truly wrong, not just disliked, such as torturing a child for fun. Many argue that real moral truths are best explained by a good God, and that the universe’s order and fitness for life point the same way.

  4. Historical evidence

For Christians the decisive evidence is Jesus: his life, his death and the evidence that he rose. If he rose, God has acted in history.

  5. Scripture

The Bible says creation itself speaks of God, and that God is not far from anyone who seeks him.

Where the Evidence Is Weaker

Each argument is debated, and serious philosophers reject them. On their own they point to a creator, a designer or a moral lawgiver, not to the God of the Bible in particular; that rests on Jesus. Many people come to faith through experience and relationships as much as through arguments.

Arguments to Avoid

  • Claiming you can prove God beyond doubt.
  • “God of the gaps”: pointing to what science can’t yet explain.
  • Treating atheists as foolish or immoral.

Psalm 19:1–4

1To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David. The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork. 2Day unto day uttereth speech, and night unto night sheweth knowledge. 3There is no speech nor language, where their voice is not heard. 4Their line is gone out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world. In them hath he set a tabernacle for the sun,

Romans 1:19–20

19Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them. 20For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:

Acts 17:24–28

24God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands; 25Neither is worshipped with men’s hands, as though he needed any thing, seeing he giveth to all life, and breath, and all things; 26And hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation; 27That they should seek the Lord, if haply they might feel after him, and find him, though he be not far from every one of us: 28For in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring.
