Lot Welcomes the Angels (Judges 19:1–30)
AKJV And there came two angels to Sodom at even; and Lot sat in the gate of Sodom: and Lot seeing them rose up to meet them; and he bowed himself with his face toward the ground; BSB BSB: Now the two angels arrived at Sodom in the evening, and Lot was sitting in the gateway of the city. When Lot saw them, he got up to meet them, bowed facedown,
AKJV And he said, Behold now, my lords, turn in, I pray you, into your servant’s house, and tarry all night, and wash your feet, and you shall rise up early, and go on your ways. And they said, No; but we will abide in the street all night. BSB BSB: and said, “My lords, please turn aside into the house of your servant; wash your feet and spend the night. Then you can rise early and go on your way.” “No,” they answered, “we will spend the night in the square.”
AKJV And he pressed on them greatly; and they turned in to him, and entered into his house; and he made them a feast, and did bake unleavened bread, and they did eat. BSB BSB: But Lot insisted so strongly that they followed him into his house. He prepared a feast for them and baked unleavened bread, and they ate.
AKJV But before they lay down, the men of the city, even the men of Sodom, compassed the house round, both old and young, all the people from every quarter: BSB BSB: Before they had gone to bed, all the men of the city of Sodom, both young and old, surrounded the house.
AKJV And they called to Lot, and said to him, Where are the men which came in to you this night? bring them out to us, that we may know them. BSB BSB: They called out to Lot, saying, “Where are the men who came to you tonight? Send them out to us so we can have relations with them!”
AKJV And Lot went out at the door to them, and shut the door after him, BSB BSB: Lot went outside to meet them, shutting the door behind him.
AKJV And said, I pray you, brothers, do not so wickedly. BSB BSB: “Please, my brothers,” he pleaded, “don’t do such a wicked thing!
AKJV And they said, Stand back. And they said again, This one fellow came in to sojourn, and he will needs be a judge: now will we deal worse with you, than with them. And they pressed sore on the man, even Lot, and came near to break the door. BSB BSB: “Get out of the way!” they replied. And they declared, “This one came here as a foreigner, and he is already acting like a judge! Now we will treat you worse than them.” And they pressed in on Lot and moved in to break down the door.
AKJV But the men put forth their hand, and pulled Lot into the house to them, and shut to the door. BSB BSB: But the men inside reached out, pulled Lot into the house with them, and shut the door.
AKJV And they smote the men that were at the door of the house with blindness, both small and great: so that they wearied themselves to find the door. BSB BSB: And they struck the men at the entrance, young and old, with blindness, so that they wearied themselves trying to find the door.
Lot Flees to Zoar 12 AKJV And the men said to Lot, Have you here any besides? son in law, and your sons, and your daughters, and whatever you have in the city, bring them out of this place: BSB BSB: Then the two men said to Lot, “Do you have anyone else here—a son-in-law, your sons or daughters, or anyone else in the city who belongs to you? Get them out of here,
AKJV For we will destroy this place, because the cry of them is waxen great before the face of the LORD; and the LORD has sent us to destroy it. BSB BSB: because we are about to destroy this place. For the outcry to the LORD against its people is so great that He has sent us to destroy it.”
AKJV And Lot went out, and spoke to his sons in law, which married his daughters, and said, Up, get you out of this place; for the LORD will destroy this city. But he seemed as one that mocked to his sons in law. BSB BSB: So Lot went out and spoke to the sons-in-law who were pledged in marriage to his daughters. “Get up,” he said. “Get out of this place, for the LORD is about to destroy the city!” But his sons-in-law thought he was joking.
AKJV And when the morning arose, then the angels hastened Lot, saying, Arise, take your wife, and your two daughters, which are here; lest you be consumed in the iniquity of the city. BSB BSB: At daybreak the angels hurried Lot along, saying, “Get up! Take your wife and your two daughters who are here, or you will be swept away in the punishment of the city.”
AKJV And it came to pass, when they had brought them forth abroad, that he said, Escape for your life; look not behind you, neither stay you in all the plain; escape to the mountain, lest you be consumed. BSB BSB: As soon as the men had brought them out, one of them said, “Run for your lives! Do not look back, and do not stop anywhere on the plain! Flee to the mountains, or you will be swept away!”
AKJV And Lot said to them, Oh, not so, my LORD: BSB BSB: But Lot replied, “No, my lords, please!
AKJV Behold now, your servant has found grace in your sight, and you have magnified your mercy, which you have showed to me in saving my life; and I cannot escape to the mountain, lest some evil take me, and I die: BSB BSB: Your servant has indeed found favor in your sight, and you have shown me great kindness by sparing my life. But I cannot run to the mountains; the disaster will overtake me, and I will die.
AKJV Behold now, this city is near to flee to, and it is a little one: Oh, let me escape thither, (is it not a little one?) and my soul shall live. BSB BSB: Look, there is a town nearby where I can flee, and it is a small place. Please let me flee there—is it not a small place? Then my life will be saved.”
AKJV And he said to him, See, I have accepted you concerning this thing also, that I will not overthrow this city, for the which you have spoken. BSB BSB: “Very well,” he answered, “I will grant this request as well, and will not demolish the town you indicate.
AKJV Haste you, escape thither; for I cannot do anything till you be come thither. Therefore the name of the city was called Zoar. BSB BSB: Hurry! Run there quickly, for I cannot do anything until you reach it.” That is why the town was called Zoar.
AKJV The sun was risen on the earth when Lot entered into Zoar. BSB BSB: And by the time the sun had risen over the land, Lot had reached Zoar.
The Destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah (Luke 17:20–37)
AKJV And he overthrew those cities, and all the plain, and all the inhabitants of the cities, and that which grew on the ground. BSB BSB: Thus He destroyed these cities and the entire plain, including all the inhabitants of the cities and everything that grew on the ground.
AKJV But his wife looked back from behind him, and she became a pillar of salt. BSB BSB: But Lot’s wife looked back, and she became a pillar of salt.
AKJV And Abraham got up early in the morning to the place where he stood before the LORD: BSB BSB: Early the next morning, Abraham got up and returned to the place where he had stood before the LORD.
AKJV And he looked toward Sodom and Gomorrah, and toward all the land of the plain, and beheld, and, see, the smoke of the country went up as the smoke of a furnace. BSB BSB: He looked down toward Sodom and Gomorrah and all the land of the plain, and he saw the smoke rising from the land like smoke from a furnace.
AKJV And it came to pass, when God destroyed the cities of the plain, that God remembered Abraham, and sent Lot out of the middle of the overthrow, when he overthrew the cities in the which Lot dwelled. BSB BSB: So when God destroyed the cities of the plain, He remembered Abraham, and He brought Lot out of the catastrophe that destroyed the cities where he had lived.
Lot and His Daughters 32 AKJV Come, let us make our father drink wine, and we will lie with him, that we may preserve seed of our father. BSB BSB: Come, let us get our father drunk with wine so we can sleep with him and preserve his line.”
AKJV And they made their father drink wine that night: and the firstborn went in, and lay with her father; and he perceived not when she lay down, nor when she arose. BSB BSB: So that night they got their father drunk with wine, and the firstborn went in and slept with her father; he was not aware when she lay down or when she got up.
AKJV And it came to pass on the morrow, that the firstborn said to the younger, Behold, I lay last night with my father: let us make him drink wine this night also; and go you in, and lie with him, that we may preserve seed of our father. BSB BSB: The next day the older daughter said to the younger, “Look, I slept with my father last night. Let us get him drunk with wine again tonight so you can go in and sleep with him and we can preserve our father’s line.”
AKJV And they made their father drink wine that night also: and the younger arose, and lay with him; and he perceived not when she lay down, nor when she arose. BSB BSB: So again that night they got their father drunk with wine, and the younger daughter went in and slept with him; he was not aware when she lay down or when she got up.
AKJV Thus were both the daughters of Lot with child by their father. BSB BSB: Thus both of Lot’s daughters became pregnant by their father.
AKJV And the first born bore a son, and called his name Moab: the same is the father of the Moabites to this day. BSB BSB: The older daughter gave birth to a son and named him Moab. He is the father of the Moabites of today.
AKJV And the younger, she also bore a son, and called his name Benammi: the same is the father of the children of Ammon to this day. BSB BSB: The younger daughter also gave birth to a son, and she named him Ben-ammi. He is the father of the Ammonites of today.
