Jesus and the Samaritan Woman 1 AKJV When therefore the LORD knew how the Pharisees had heard that Jesus made and baptized more disciples than John, BSB BSB: When Jesus realized that the Pharisees were aware He was gaining and baptizing more disciples than John
AKJV (Though Jesus himself baptized not, but his disciples,) BSB BSB: (although it was not Jesus who baptized, but His disciples),
AKJV He left Judaea, and departed again into Galilee. BSB BSB: He left Judea and returned to Galilee.
AKJV And he must needs go through Samaria. BSB BSB: Now He had to pass through Samaria.
AKJV Then comes he to a city of Samaria, which is called Sychar, near to the parcel of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph. BSB BSB: So He came to a town of Samaria called Sychar, near the plot of ground that Jacob had given to his son Joseph.
AKJV Now Jacob’s well was there. Jesus therefore, being wearied with his journey, sat thus on the well: and it was about the sixth hour. BSB BSB: Since Jacob’s well was there, Jesus, weary from His journey, sat down by the well. It was about the sixth hour.
AKJV There comes a woman of Samaria to draw water: Jesus says to her, Give me to drink. BSB BSB: When a Samaritan woman came to draw water, Jesus said to her, “Give Me a drink.”
AKJV (For his disciples were gone away to the city to buy meat.) BSB BSB: (His disciples had gone into the town to buy food.)
AKJV Then says the woman of Samaria to him, How is it that you, being a Jew, ask drink of me, which am a woman of Samaria? for the Jews have no dealings with the Samaritans. BSB BSB: “You are a Jew,” said the woman. “How can You ask for a drink from me, a Samaritan woman?” (For Jews do not associate with Samaritans.)
AKJV Jesus answered and said to her, If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that says to you, Give me to drink; you would have asked of him, and he would have given you living water. BSB BSB: Jesus answered, “If you knew the gift of God and who is asking you for a drink, you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water.”
AKJV The woman says to him, Sir, you have nothing to draw with, and the well is deep: from where then have you that living water? BSB BSB: “Sir,” the woman replied, “You have nothing to draw with and the well is deep. Where then will You get this living water?
AKJV Are you greater than our father Jacob, which gave us the well, and drank thereof himself, and his children, and his cattle? BSB BSB: Are You greater than our father Jacob, who gave us this well and drank from it himself, as did his sons and his livestock?”
AKJV Jesus answered and said to her, Whoever drinks of this water shall thirst again: BSB BSB: Jesus said to her, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again.
AKJV But whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life. BSB BSB: But whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a fount of water springing up to eternal life.”
AKJV The woman says to him, Sir, give me this water, that I thirst not, neither come here to draw. BSB BSB: The woman said to Him, “Sir, give me this water so that I will not get thirsty and have to keep coming here to draw water.”
AKJV Jesus says to her, Go, call your husband, and come here. BSB BSB: Jesus told her, “Go, call your husband and come back.”
AKJV The woman answered and said, I have no husband. Jesus said to her, You have well said, I have no husband: BSB BSB: “I have no husband,” the woman replied. Jesus said to her, “You are correct to say that you have no husband.
AKJV For you have had five husbands; and he whom you now have is not your husband: in that said you truly. BSB BSB: In fact, you have had five husbands, and the man you now have is not your husband. You have spoken truthfully.”
AKJV The woman says to him, Sir, I perceive that you are a prophet. BSB BSB: “Sir,” the woman said, “I see that You are a prophet.
AKJV Jesus says to her, Woman, believe me, the hour comes, when you shall neither in this mountain, nor yet at Jerusalem, worship the Father. BSB BSB: “Believe Me, woman,” Jesus replied, “a time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem.
AKJV But the hour comes, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeks such to worship him. BSB BSB: But a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth, for the Father is seeking such as these to worship Him.
AKJV God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth. BSB BSB: God is Spirit, and His worshipers must worship Him in spirit and in truth.”
AKJV The woman says to him, I know that Messias comes, which is called Christ: when he is come, he will tell us all things. BSB BSB: The woman said, “I know that Messiah” (called Christ) “is coming. When He comes, He will explain everything to us.”
AKJV Jesus says to her, I that speak to you am he. BSB BSB: Jesus answered, “I who speak to you am He.”
The Disciples Return and Marvel 27 AKJV And on this came his disciples, and marveled that he talked with the woman: yet no man said, What seek you? or, Why talk you with her? BSB BSB: Just then His disciples returned and were surprised that He was speaking with a woman. But no one asked Him, “What do You want from her?” or “Why are You talking with her?”
AKJV The woman then left her water pot, and went her way into the city, and says to the men, BSB BSB: Then the woman left her water jar, went back into the town, and said to the people,
AKJV Come, see a man, which told me all things that ever I did: is not this the Christ? BSB BSB: “Come, see a man who told me everything I ever did. Could this be the Christ?”
AKJV Then they went out of the city, and came to him. BSB BSB: So they left the town and made their way toward Jesus.
AKJV In the mean while his disciples prayed him, saying, Master, eat. BSB BSB: Meanwhile the disciples urged Him, “Rabbi, eat something.”
AKJV But he said to them, I have meat to eat that you know not of. BSB BSB: But He told them, “I have food to eat that you know nothing about.”
AKJV Therefore says the disciples one to another, Has any man brought him something to eat? BSB BSB: So the disciples asked one another, “Could someone have brought Him food?”
AKJV Jesus said to them, My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work. BSB BSB: Jesus explained, “My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me and to finish His work.
AKJV Say not you, There are yet four months, and then comes harvest? behold, I say to you, Lift up your eyes, and look on the fields; for they are white already to harvest. BSB BSB: Do you not say, ‘There are still four months until the harvest’? I tell you, lift up your eyes and look at the fields, for they are ripe for harvest.
AKJV And he that reaps receives wages, and gathers fruit to life eternal: that both he that sows and he that reaps may rejoice together. BSB BSB: Already the reaper draws his wages and gathers a crop for eternal life, so that the sower and the reaper may rejoice together.
AKJV And herein is that saying true, One sows, and another reaps. BSB BSB: For in this case the saying ‘One sows and another reaps’ is true.
AKJV I sent you to reap that where on you bestowed no labor: other men labored, and you are entered into their labors. BSB BSB: I sent you to reap what you have not worked for; others have done the hard work, and now you have taken up their labor.”
Many Samaritans Believe 39 AKJV And many of the Samaritans of that city believed on him for the saying of the woman, which testified, He told me all that ever I did. BSB BSB: Many of the Samaritans from that town believed in Jesus because of the woman’s testimony, “He told me everything I ever did.”
AKJV So when the Samaritans were come to him, they sought him that he would tarry with them: and he stayed there two days. BSB BSB: So when the Samaritans came to Him, they asked Him to stay with them, and He stayed two days.
AKJV And many more believed because of his own word; BSB BSB: And many more believed because of His message.
AKJV And said to the woman, Now we believe, not because of your saying: for we have heard him ourselves, and know that this is indeed the Christ, the Savior of the world. BSB BSB: They said to the woman, “We now believe not only because of your words; we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this man truly is the Savior of the world.”
