Jonah Flees from the LORD (Nahum 1:1–15)
AKJV Now the word of the LORD came to Jonah the son of Amittai, saying, BSB BSB: Now the word of the LORD came to Jonah son of Amittai, saying,
AKJV Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and cry against it; for their wickedness is come up before me. BSB BSB: “Get up! Go to the great city of Nineveh and preach against it, because its wickedness has come up before Me.”
AKJV But Jonah rose up to flee to Tarshish from the presence of the LORD, and went down to Joppa; and he found a ship going to Tarshish: so he paid the fare thereof, and went down into it, to go with them to Tarshish from the presence of the LORD. BSB BSB: Jonah, however, got up to flee to Tarshish, away from the presence of the LORD. He went down to Joppa and found a ship bound for Tarshish. So he paid the fare and went aboard to sail for Tarshish, away from the presence of the LORD.
The Great Storm (Acts 27:13–26)
AKJV But the LORD sent out a great wind into the sea, and there was a mighty tempest in the sea, so that the ship was like to be broken. BSB BSB: Then the LORD hurled a great wind upon the sea, and such a violent storm arose that the ship was in danger of breaking apart.
AKJV Then the mariners were afraid, and cried every man to his god, and cast forth the wares that were in the ship into the sea, to lighten it of them. But Jonah was gone down into the sides of the ship; and he lay, and was fast asleep. BSB BSB: The sailors were afraid, and each cried out to his own god. And they threw the ship’s cargo into the sea to lighten the load. But Jonah had gone down to the lowest part of the vessel, where he lay down and fell into a deep sleep.
AKJV So the shipmaster came to him, and said to him, What mean you, O sleeper? arise, call on your God, if so be that God will think on us, that we perish not. BSB BSB: The captain approached him and said, “How can you sleep? Get up and call upon your God. Perhaps this God will consider us, so that we may not perish.”
AKJV And they said every one to his fellow, Come, and let us cast lots, that we may know for whose cause this evil is on us. So they cast lots, and the lot fell on Jonah. BSB BSB: “Come!” said the sailors to one another. “Let us cast lots to find out who is responsible for this calamity that is upon us.” So they cast lots, and the lot fell on Jonah.
AKJV Then said they to him, Tell us, we pray you, for whose cause this evil is on us; What is your occupation? and from where come you? what is your country? and of what people are you? BSB BSB: “Tell us now,” they demanded, “who is to blame for this calamity that is upon us? What is your occupation, and where have you come from? What is your country, and who are your people?”
AKJV And he said to them, I am an Hebrew; and I fear the LORD, the God of heaven, which has made the sea and the dry land. BSB BSB: “I am a Hebrew,” replied Jonah. “I worship the LORD, the God of the heavens, who made the sea and the dry land.”
AKJV Then were the men exceedingly afraid, and said to him. Why have you done this? For the men knew that he fled from the presence of the LORD, because he had told them. BSB BSB: Then the men were even more afraid and said to him, “What have you done?” The men knew that he was fleeing from the presence of the LORD, because he had told them.
Jonah Cast into the Sea 11 AKJV Then said they to him, What shall we do to you, that the sea may be calm to us? for the sea worked, and was tempestuous. BSB BSB: Now the sea was growing worse and worse, so they said to Jonah, “What must we do to you to calm this sea for us?”
AKJV And he said to them, Take me up, and cast me forth into the sea; so shall the sea be calm to you: for I know that for my sake this great tempest is on you. BSB BSB: “Pick me up,” he answered, “and cast me into the sea, so it may quiet down for you. For I know that I am to blame for this violent storm that has come upon you.”
AKJV Nevertheless the men rowed hard to bring it to the land; but they could not: for the sea worked, and was tempestuous against them. BSB BSB: Nevertheless, the men rowed hard to get back to dry land, but they could not, for the sea was raging against them more and more.
AKJV Why they cried to the LORD, and said, We beseech you, O LORD, we beseech you, let us not perish for this man’s life, and lay not on us innocent blood: for you, O LORD, have done as it pleased you. BSB BSB: So they cried out to the LORD: “Please, O LORD, do not let us perish on account of this man’s life! Do not charge us with innocent blood! For You, O LORD, have done as You pleased.”
AKJV So they look up Jonah, and cast him forth into the sea: and the sea ceased from her raging. BSB BSB: Then they picked up Jonah and cast him into the sea, and the raging sea grew calm.
AKJV Then the men feared the LORD exceedingly, and offered a sacrifice to the LORD, and made vows. BSB BSB: Then the men feared the LORD greatly, and they offered a sacrifice to the LORD and made vows to Him.
