Lands Yet Unconquered (Judges 1:1–7)
1 AKJV Now Joshua was old and stricken in years; and the LORD said to him, You are old and stricken in years, and there remains yet very much land to be possessed. BSB BSB: Now Joshua was old and well along in years, and the LORD said to him, “You are old and well along in years, but very much of the land remains to be possessed.
2 AKJV This is the land that yet remains: all the borders of the Philistines, and all Geshuri, BSB BSB: This is the land that remains: All the territory of the Philistines and the Geshurites,
3 AKJV From Sihor, which is before Egypt, even to the borders of Ekron northward, which is counted to the Canaanite: five lords of the Philistines; the Gazathites, and the Ashdothites, the Eshkalonites, the Gittites, and the Ekronites; also the Avites: BSB BSB: from the Shihor east of Egypt to the territory of Ekron on the north (considered to be Canaanite territory)—that of the five Philistine rulers of Gaza, Ashdod, Ashkelon, Gath, and Ekron, as well as that of the Avvites; 4 AKJV From the south, all the land of the Canaanites, and Mearah that is beside the Sidonians to Aphek, to the borders of the Amorites: BSB BSB: to the south, all the land of the Canaanites, from Mearah of the Sidonians to Aphek, as far as the border of the Amorites;
5 AKJV And the land of the Giblites, and all Lebanon, toward the sun rise, from Baalgad under mount Hermon to the entering into Hamath. BSB BSB: the land of the Gebalites; and all Lebanon to the east, from Baal-gad below Mount Hermon to Lebo-hamath.
6 AKJV All the inhabitants of the hill country from Lebanon to Misrephothmaim, and all the Sidonians, them will I drive out from before the children of Israel: only divide you it by lot to the Israelites for an inheritance, as I have commanded you. BSB BSB: All the inhabitants of the hill country from Lebanon to Misrephoth-maim—all the Sidonians—I Myself will drive out before the Israelites. Be sure to divide it by lot as an inheritance to Israel, as I have commanded you.
7 AKJV Now therefore divide this land for an inheritance to the nine tribes, and the half tribe of Manasseh, BSB BSB: Now therefore divide this land as an inheritance to the nine tribes and the half-tribe of Manasseh.”
The Inheritance East of the Jordan (Numbers 32:1–42; Deuteronomy 3:12–22)
8 AKJV With whom the Reubenites and the Gadites have received their inheritance, which Moses gave them, beyond Jordan eastward, even as Moses the servant of the LORD gave them; BSB BSB: The other half of Manasseh, along with the Reubenites and Gadites, had received the inheritance Moses had given them beyond the Jordan to the east, just as Moses the servant of the LORD had assigned to them:
9 AKJV From Aroer, that is on the bank of the river Arnon, and the city that is in the middle of the river, and all the plain of Medeba to Dibon; BSB BSB: The area from Aroer on the rim of the Arnon Valley, along with the city in the middle of the valley, the whole plateau of Medeba as far as Dibon,
10 AKJV And all the cities of Sihon king of the Amorites, which reigned in Heshbon, to the border of the children of Ammon; BSB BSB: and all the cities of Sihon king of the Amorites who reigned in Heshbon, as far as the border of the Ammonites;
11 AKJV And Gilead, and the border of the Geshurites and Maachathites, and all mount Hermon, and all Bashan to Salcah; BSB BSB: also Gilead and the territory of the Geshurites and Maacathites, all of Mount Hermon, and all Bashan as far as Salecah—
12 AKJV All the kingdom of Og in Bashan, which reigned in Ashtaroth and in Edrei, who remained of the remnant of the giants: for these did Moses smite, and cast them out. BSB BSB: the whole kingdom of Og in Bashan, who had reigned in Ashtaroth and Edrei and had remained as a remnant of the Rephaim. Moses had struck them down and dispossessed them,
13 AKJV Nevertheless the children of Israel expelled not the Geshurites, nor the Maachathites: but the Geshurites and the Maachathites dwell among the Israelites until this day. BSB BSB: but the Israelites did not drive out the Geshurites or the Maacathites. So Geshur and Maacath dwell among the Israelites to this day.
14 AKJV Only to the tribes of Levi he gave none inheritance; the sacrifices of the LORD God of Israel made by fire are their inheritance, as he said to them. BSB BSB: To the tribe of Levi, however, Moses had given no inheritance. The food offerings to the LORD, the God of Israel, are their inheritance, just as He had promised them.
Reuben’s Inheritance 15 AKJV And Moses gave to the tribe of the children of Reuben inheritance according to their families. BSB BSB: This is what Moses had given to the clans of the tribe of Reuben:
16 AKJV And their coast was from Aroer, that is on the bank of the river Arnon, and the city that is in the middle of the river, and all the plain by Medeba; BSB BSB: The territory from Aroer on the rim of the Arnon Valley, along with the city in the middle of the valley, to the whole plateau beyond Medeba,
17 AKJV Heshbon, and all her cities that are in the plain; Dibon, and Bamothbaal, and Bethbaalmeon, BSB BSB: to Heshbon and all its cities on the plateau, including Dibon, Bamoth-baal, Beth-baal-meon,
18 AKJV And Jahaza, and Kedemoth, and Mephaath, BSB BSB: Jahaz, Kedemoth, Mephaath,
19 AKJV And Kirjathaim, and Sibmah, and Zarethshahar in the mount of the valley, BSB BSB: Kiriathaim, Sibmah, Zereth-shahar on the hill in the valley,
20 AKJV And Bethpeor, and Ashdothpisgah, and Bethjeshimoth, BSB BSB: Beth-peor, the slopes of Pisgah, and Beth-jeshimoth—
21 AKJV And all the cities of the plain, and all the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites, which reigned in Heshbon, whom Moses smote with the princes of Midian, Evi, and Rekem, and Zur, and Hur, and Reba, which were dukes of Sihon, dwelling in the country. BSB BSB: all the cities of the plateau and all the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites, who reigned in Heshbon until Moses killed him and the chiefs of Midian (Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur, and Reba), the princes of Sihon who lived in the land.
22 AKJV Balaam also the son of Beor, the soothsayer, did the children of Israel slay with the sword among them that were slain by them. BSB BSB: The Israelites also killed the diviner Balaam son of Beor along with the others they put to the sword.
23 AKJV And the border of the children of Reuben was Jordan, and the border thereof. This was the inheritance of the children of Reuben after their families, the cities and the villages thereof. BSB BSB: And the border of the Reubenites was the bank of the Jordan. This was the inheritance of the clans of the Reubenites, including the cities and villages.
Gad’s Inheritance 24 AKJV And Moses gave inheritance to the tribe of Gad, even to the children of Gad according to their families. BSB BSB: This is what Moses had given to the clans of the tribe of Gad:
25 AKJV And their coast was Jazer, and all the cities of Gilead, and half the land of the children of Ammon, to Aroer that is before Rabbah; BSB BSB: The territory of Jazer, all the cities of Gilead, and half the land of the Ammonites as far as Aroer, near Rabbah;
26 AKJV And from Heshbon to Ramathmizpeh, and Betonim; and from Mahanaim to the border of Debir; BSB BSB: the territory from Heshbon to Ramath-mizpeh and Betonim, and from Mahanaim to the border of Debir;
27 AKJV And in the valley, Betharam, and Bethnimrah, and Succoth, and Zaphon, the rest of the kingdom of Sihon king of Heshbon, Jordan and his border, even to the edge of the sea of Chinnereth on the other side Jordan eastward. BSB BSB: and in the valley, Beth-haram, Beth-nimrah, Succoth, and Zaphon, with the rest of the kingdom of Sihon king of Heshbon (the territory on the east side of the Jordan up to the edge of the Sea of Chinnereth).
28 AKJV This is the inheritance of the children of Gad after their families, the cities, and their villages. BSB BSB: This was the inheritance of the clans of the Gadites, including the cities and villages.
Manasseh’s Eastern Inheritance 29 AKJV And Moses gave inheritance to the half tribe of Manasseh: and this was the possession of the half tribe of the children of Manasseh by their families. BSB BSB: This is what Moses had given to the clans of the half-tribe of Manasseh, that is, to half the tribe of the descendants of Manasseh:
30 AKJV And their coast was from Mahanaim, all Bashan, all the kingdom of Og king of Bashan, and all the towns of Jair, which are in Bashan, three score cities: BSB BSB: The territory from Mahanaim through all Bashan—all the kingdom of Og king of Bashan, including all the towns of Jair that are in Bashan, sixty cities;
31 AKJV And half Gilead, and Ashtaroth, and Edrei, cities of the kingdom of Og in Bashan, were pertaining to the children of Machir the son of Manasseh, even to the one half of the children of Machir by their families. BSB BSB: half of Gilead; and Ashtaroth and Edrei, the royal cities of Og in Bashan. All this was for the clans of the descendants of Machir son of Manasseh, that is, half of the descendants of Machir.
32 AKJV These are the countries which Moses did distribute for inheritance in the plains of Moab, on the other side Jordan, by Jericho, eastward. BSB BSB: These were the portions Moses had given them on the plains of Moab beyond the Jordan, east of Jericho.
33 AKJV But to the tribe of Levi Moses gave not any inheritance: the LORD God of Israel was their inheritance, as he said to them. BSB BSB: To the tribe of Levi, however, Moses had given no inheritance. The LORD, the God of Israel, is their inheritance, just as He had promised them.
