Unlawful Sexual Relations (Matthew 5:27–30)
1 AKJV And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, BSB BSB: Then the LORD said to Moses,
2 AKJV Speak to the children of Israel, and say to them, I am the LORD your God. BSB BSB: “Speak to the Israelites and tell them: I am the LORD your God.
3 AKJV After the doings of the land of Egypt, wherein you dwelled, shall you not do: and after the doings of the land of Canaan, where I bring you, shall you not do: neither shall you walk in their ordinances. BSB BSB: You must not follow the practices of the land of Egypt, where you used to live, and you must not follow the practices of the land of Canaan, into which I am bringing you. You must not walk in their customs.
4 AKJV You shall do my judgments, and keep my ordinances, to walk therein: I am the LORD your God. BSB BSB: You are to practice My judgments and keep My statutes by walking in them. I am the LORD your God.
5 AKJV You shall therefore keep my statutes, and my judgments: which if a man do, he shall live in them: I am the LORD. BSB BSB: Keep My statutes and My judgments, for the man who does these things will live by them. I am the LORD.
7 AKJV The nakedness of your father, or the nakedness of your mother, shall you not uncover: she is your mother; you shall not uncover her nakedness. BSB BSB: You must not expose the nakedness of your father by having sexual relations with your mother. She is your mother; you must not have sexual relations with her.
8 AKJV The nakedness of your father’s wife shall you not uncover: it is your father’s nakedness. BSB BSB: You must not have sexual relations with your father’s wife; it would dishonor your father.
9 AKJV The nakedness of your sister, the daughter of your father, or daughter of your mother, whether she be born at home, or born abroad, even their nakedness you shall not uncover. BSB BSB: You must not have sexual relations with your sister, either your father’s daughter or your mother’s daughter, whether she was born in the same home or elsewhere.
10 AKJV The nakedness of your son’s daughter, or of your daughter’s daughter, even their nakedness you shall not uncover: for theirs is your own nakedness. BSB BSB: You must not have sexual relations with your son’s daughter or your daughter’s daughter, for that would shame your family.
11 AKJV The nakedness of your father’s wife’s daughter, begotten of your father, she is your sister, you shall not uncover her nakedness. BSB BSB: You must not have sexual relations with the daughter of your father’s wife, born to your father; she is your sister.
12 AKJV You shall not uncover the nakedness of your father’s sister: she is your father’s near kinswoman. BSB BSB: You must not have sexual relations with your father’s sister; she is your father’s close relative.
13 AKJV You shall not uncover the nakedness of your mother’s sister: for she is your mother’s near kinswoman. BSB BSB: You must not have sexual relations with your mother’s sister, for she is your mother’s close relative.
14 AKJV You shall not uncover the nakedness of your father’s brother, you shall not approach to his wife: she is your aunt. BSB BSB: You must not dishonor your father’s brother by approaching his wife to have sexual relations with her; she is your aunt.
15 AKJV You shall not uncover the nakedness of your daughter in law: she is your son’s wife; you shall not uncover her nakedness. BSB BSB: You must not have sexual relations with your daughter-in-law. She is your son’s wife; you are not to have sexual relations with her.
16 AKJV You shall not uncover the nakedness of your brother’s wife: it is your brother’s nakedness. BSB BSB: You must not have sexual relations with your brother’s wife; that would shame your brother.
17 AKJV You shall not uncover the nakedness of a woman and her daughter, neither shall you take her son’s daughter, or her daughter’s daughter, to uncover her nakedness; for they are her near kinswomen: it is wickedness. BSB BSB: You must not have sexual relations with both a woman and her daughter. You are not to marry her son’s daughter or her daughter’s daughter and have sexual relations with her. They are close relatives; it is depraved.
18 AKJV Neither shall you take a wife to her sister, to vex her, to uncover her nakedness, beside the other in her life time. BSB BSB: You must not take your wife’s sister as a rival wife and have sexual relations with her while your wife is still alive.
19 AKJV Also you shall not approach to a woman to uncover her nakedness, as long as she is put apart for her uncleanness. BSB BSB: You must not approach a woman to have sexual relations with her during her menstrual period.
20 AKJV Moreover you shall not lie carnally with your neighbor’s wife, to defile yourself with her. BSB BSB: You must not lie carnally with your neighbor’s wife and thus defile yourself with her.
22 AKJV You shall not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination. BSB BSB: You must not lie with a man as with a woman; that is an abomination.
23 AKJV Neither shall you lie with any beast to defile yourself therewith: neither shall any woman stand before a beast to lie down thereto: it is confusion. BSB BSB: You must not lie carnally with any animal, thus defiling yourself with it; a woman must not stand before an animal to mate with it; that is a perversion.
25 AKJV And the land is defiled: therefore I do visit the iniquity thereof on it, and the land itself vomits out her inhabitants. BSB BSB: Even the land has become defiled, so I am punishing it for its sin, and the land will vomit out its inhabitants.
26 AKJV You shall therefore keep my statutes and my judgments, and shall not commit any of these abominations; neither any of your own nation, nor any stranger that sojourns among you: BSB BSB: But you are to keep My statutes and ordinances, and you must not commit any of these abominations—neither your native-born nor the foreigner who lives among you.
27 AKJV (For all these abominations have the men of the land done, which were before you, and the land is defiled;) BSB BSB: For the men who were in the land before you committed all these abominations, and the land has become defiled.
28 AKJV That the land spew not you out also, when you defile it, as it spewed out the nations that were before you. BSB BSB: So if you defile the land, it will vomit you out as it spewed out the nations before you.
29 AKJV For whoever shall commit any of these abominations, even the souls that commit them shall be cut off from among their people. BSB BSB: Therefore anyone who commits any of these abominations must be cut off from among his people.
30 AKJV Therefore shall you keep my ordinance, that you commit not any one of these abominable customs, which were committed before you, and that you defile not yourselves therein: I am the LORD your God. BSB BSB: You must keep My charge not to practice any of the abominable customs that were practiced before you, so that you do not defile yourselves by them. I am the LORD your God.”
