Giving to the Needy (Deuteronomy 15:7–11)
AKJV Therefore when you do your alms, do not sound a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory of men. Truly I say to you, They have their reward. BSB BSB: So when you give to the needy, do not sound a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by men. Truly I tell you, they already have their full reward.
AKJV But when you do alms, let not your left hand know what your right hand does: BSB BSB: But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing,
AKJV That your alms may be in secret: and your Father which sees in secret himself shall reward you openly. BSB BSB: so that your giving may be in secret. And your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.
The Lord’s Prayer (Luke 11:1–4)
AKJV And when you pray, you shall not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Truly I say to you, They have their reward. BSB BSB: And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites. For they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by men. Truly I tell you, they already have their full reward.
AKJV But you, when you pray, enter into your closet, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father which is in secret; and your Father which sees in secret shall reward you openly. BSB BSB: But when you pray, go into your inner room, shut your door, and pray to your Father, who is unseen. And your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.
AKJV But when you pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking. BSB BSB: And when you pray, do not babble on like pagans, for they think that by their many words they will be heard.
AKJV Be not you therefore like to them: for your Father knows what things you have need of, before you ask him. BSB BSB: Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask Him.
AKJV After this manner therefore pray you: Our Father which are in heaven, Hallowed be your name. BSB BSB: So then, this is how you should pray: ‘Our Father in heaven, hallowed be Your name.
AKJV Your kingdom come, Your will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. BSB BSB: Your kingdom come, Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
AKJV Give us this day our daily bread. BSB BSB: Give us this day our daily bread.
AKJV And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. BSB BSB: And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.
AKJV And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For your is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen. BSB BSB: And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.’
AKJV For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you: BSB BSB: For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.
AKJV But if you forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses. BSB BSB: But if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive yours.
Proper Fasting 16 AKJV Moreover when you fast, be not, as the hypocrites, of a sad countenance: for they disfigure their faces, that they may appear to men to fast. Truly I say to you, They have their reward. BSB BSB: When you fast, do not be somber like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces to show men they are fasting. Truly I tell you, they already have their full reward.
AKJV But you, when you fast, anoint your head, and wash your face; BSB BSB: But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face,
AKJV That you appear not to men to fast, but to your Father which is in secret: and your Father, which sees in secret, shall reward you openly. BSB BSB: so that your fasting will not be obvious to men, but only to your Father, who is unseen. And your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.
Treasures in Heaven (Luke 12:32–34)
AKJV Lay not up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust does corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: BSB BSB: Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal.
AKJV But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust does corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: BSB BSB: But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal.
AKJV For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also. BSB BSB: For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
The Lamp of the Body (Luke 11:33–36)
AKJV The light of the body is the eye: if therefore your eye be single, your whole body shall be full of light. BSB BSB: The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are good, your whole body will be full of light.
AKJV But if your eye be evil, your whole body shall be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in you be darkness, how great is that darkness! BSB BSB: But if your eyes are bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness!
AKJV No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon. BSB BSB: No one can serve two masters: Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.
Do Not Worry (Luke 12:22–31)
AKJV Therefore I say to you, Take no thought for your life, what you shall eat, or what you shall drink; nor yet for your body, what you shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment? BSB BSB: Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes?
AKJV Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit to his stature? BSB BSB: Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life?
AKJV And why take you thought for raiment? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin: BSB BSB: And why do you worry about clothes? Consider how the lilies of the field grow: They do not labor or spin.
AKJV And yet I say to you, That even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. BSB BSB: Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his glory was adorned like one of these.
AKJV Why, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which to day is, and to morrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? BSB BSB: If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the furnace, will He not much more clothe you, O you of little faith?
AKJV (For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knows that you have need of all these things. BSB BSB: For the Gentiles strive after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them.
AKJV But seek you first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added to you. BSB BSB: But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added unto you.
AKJV Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient to the day is the evil thereof. BSB BSB: Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Today has enough trouble of its own.
