Cleansing the Camps (Leviticus 13:1–46)
AKJV And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, BSB BSB: Then the LORD said to Moses,
AKJV Command the children of Israel, that they put out of the camp every leper, and every one that has an issue, and whoever is defiled by the dead: BSB BSB: “Command the Israelites to send away from the camp anyone with a skin disease, anyone who has a bodily discharge, and anyone who is defiled by a dead body.
AKJV Both male and female shall you put out, without the camp shall you put them; that they defile not their camps, in the middle whereof I dwell. BSB BSB: You must send away male and female alike; send them outside the camp so they will not defile their camp, where I dwell among them.”
AKJV And the children of Israel did so, and put them out without the camp: as the LORD spoke to Moses, so did the children of Israel. BSB BSB: So the Israelites did this, sending such people outside the camp. They did just as the LORD had instructed Moses.
Confession and Restitution (Luke 19:1–10)
AKJV And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, BSB BSB: And the LORD said to Moses,
AKJV Speak to the children of Israel, When a man or woman shall commit any sin that men commit, to do a trespass against the LORD, and that person be guilty; BSB BSB: “Tell the Israelites that when a man or woman acts unfaithfully against the LORD by committing any sin against another, that person is guilty
AKJV Then they shall confess their sin which they have done: and he shall recompense his trespass with the principal thereof, and add to it the fifth part thereof, and give it to him against whom he has trespassed. BSB BSB: and must confess the sin he has committed. He must make full restitution, add a fifth to its value, and give all this to the one he has wronged.
AKJV But if the man have no kinsman to recompense the trespass to, let the trespass be recompensed to the LORD, even to the priest; beside the ram of the atonement, whereby an atonement shall be made for him. BSB BSB: But if the man has no relative to whom restitution can be made for the wrong, the restitution belongs to the LORD and must be given to the priest along with the ram of atonement, by which the atonement is made for him.
AKJV And every offering of all the holy things of the children of Israel, which they bring to the priest, shall be his. BSB BSB: Every sacred contribution the Israelites bring to the priest shall belong to him.
AKJV And every man’s hallowed things shall be his: whatever any man gives the priest, it shall be his. BSB BSB: Each man’s sacred gifts are his own, but whatever he gives to the priest will belong to the priest.”
The Adultery Test 11 AKJV And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, BSB BSB: Then the LORD said to Moses,
AKJV Speak to the children of Israel, and say to them, If any man’s wife go aside, and commit a trespass against him, BSB BSB: “Speak to the Israelites and tell them that if any man’s wife goes astray and is unfaithful to him
AKJV And a man lie with her carnally, and it be hid from the eyes of her husband, and be kept close, and she be defiled, and there be no witness against her, neither she be taken with the manner; BSB BSB: by sleeping with another man, and it is concealed from her husband and her impurity is undetected (since there is no witness against her and she was not caught in the act),
AKJV And the spirit of jealousy come on him, and he be jealous of his wife, and she be defiled: or if the spirit of jealousy come on him, and he be jealous of his wife, and she be not defiled: BSB BSB: and if a feeling of jealousy comes over her husband and he suspects his wife who has defiled herself—or if a feeling of jealousy comes over him and he suspects her even though she has not defiled herself—
AKJV Then shall the man bring his wife to the priest, and he shall bring her offering for her, the tenth part of an ephah of barley meal; he shall pour no oil on it, nor put frankincense thereon; for it is an offering of jealousy, an offering of memorial, bringing iniquity to remembrance. BSB BSB: then he is to bring his wife to the priest. He must also bring for her an offering of a tenth of an ephah of barley flour. He is not to pour oil over it or put frankincense on it, because it is a grain offering for jealousy, an offering of memorial as a reminder of iniquity.
AKJV And the priest shall bring her near, and set her before the LORD: BSB BSB: The priest is to bring the wife forward and have her stand before the LORD.
AKJV And the priest shall take holy water in an earthen vessel; and of the dust that is in the floor of the tabernacle the priest shall take, and put it into the water: BSB BSB: Then he is to take some holy water in a clay jar and put some of the dust from the tabernacle floor into the water.
AKJV And the priest shall set the woman before the LORD, and uncover the woman’s head, and put the offering of memorial in her hands, which is the jealousy offering: and the priest shall have in his hand the bitter water that causes the curse: BSB BSB: After the priest has the woman stand before the LORD, he is to let down her hair and place in her hands the grain offering of memorial, which is the grain offering for jealousy. The priest is to hold the bitter water that brings a curse.
AKJV And the priest shall charge her by an oath, and say to the woman, If no man have lain with you, and if you have not gone aside to uncleanness with another instead of your husband, be you free from this bitter water that causes the curse: BSB BSB: And he is to put the woman under oath and say to her, ‘If no other man has slept with you and you have not gone astray and become defiled while under your husband’s authority, may you be immune to this bitter water that brings a curse.
AKJV But if you have gone aside to another instead of your husband, and if you be defiled, and some man have lain with you beside your husband: BSB BSB: But if you have gone astray while under your husband’s authority and have defiled yourself and lain carnally with a man other than your husband’—
AKJV Then the priest shall charge the woman with an oath of cursing, and the priest shall say to the woman, The LORD make you a curse and an oath among your people, when the LORD does make your thigh to rot, and your belly to swell; BSB BSB: and the priest shall have the woman swear under the oath of the curse—‘then may the LORD make you an attested curse among your people by making your thigh shrivel and your belly swell.
AKJV And this water that causes the curse shall go into your bowels, to make your belly to swell, and your thigh to rot: And the woman shall say, Amen, amen. BSB BSB: May this water that brings a curse enter your stomach and cause your belly to swell and your thigh to shrivel.’ Then the woman is to say, ‘Amen, Amen.’
AKJV And the priest shall write these curses in a book, and he shall blot them out with the bitter water: BSB BSB: And the priest shall write these curses on a scroll and wash them off into the bitter water.
AKJV And he shall cause the woman to drink the bitter water that causes the curse: and the water that causes the curse shall enter into her, and become bitter. BSB BSB: He is to have the woman drink the bitter water that brings a curse, and it will enter her and may cause her bitter suffering.
AKJV Then the priest shall take the jealousy offering out of the woman’s hand, and shall wave the offering before the LORD, and offer it on the altar: BSB BSB: The priest shall take from her hand the grain offering for jealousy, wave it before the LORD, and bring it to the altar.
AKJV And the priest shall take an handful of the offering, even the memorial thereof, and burn it on the altar, and afterward shall cause the woman to drink the water. BSB BSB: Then the priest is to take a handful of the grain offering as a memorial portion and burn it on the altar; after that he is to have the woman drink the water.
AKJV And when he has made her to drink the water, then it shall come to pass, that, if she be defiled, and have done trespass against her husband, that the water that causes the curse shall enter into her, and become bitter, and her belly shall swell, and her thigh shall rot: and the woman shall be a curse among her people. BSB BSB: When he has made her drink the water, if she has defiled herself and been unfaithful to her husband, then the water that brings a curse will enter her and cause bitter suffering; her belly will swell, her thigh will shrivel, and she will become accursed among her people.
AKJV And if the woman be not defiled, but be clean; then she shall be free, and shall conceive seed. BSB BSB: But if the woman has not defiled herself and is clean, she will be unaffected and able to conceive children.
AKJV This is the law of jealousies, when a wife goes aside to another instead of her husband, and is defiled; BSB BSB: This is the law of jealousy when a wife goes astray and defiles herself while under her husband’s authority,
AKJV Or when the spirit of jealousy comes on him, and he be jealous over his wife, and shall set the woman before the LORD, and the priest shall execute on her all this law. BSB BSB: or when a feeling of jealousy comes over a husband and he suspects his wife. He is to have the woman stand before the LORD, and the priest is to apply to her this entire law.
AKJV Then shall the man be guiltless from iniquity, and this woman shall bear her iniquity. BSB BSB: The husband will be free from guilt, but the woman shall bear her iniquity.”
