ARST Soon after that, Samuel died, and all the Israelite people gathered and mourned for him. They buried his body outside his home in Ramah. Then David and his men moved to the wilderness of Paran. BSB BSB: When Samuel died, all Israel gathered to mourn for him; and they buried him at his home in Ramah. Then David set out and went down to the Wilderness of Paran.
ARST In Maon town there was a man who owned land in Carmel, a nearby village. He was very rich; he owned 3, 000 sheep and 1, 000 goats. Carmel is where he sheared his sheep. BSB BSB: Now there was a man in Maon whose business was in Carmel. He was a very wealthy man with a thousand goats and three thousand sheep, which he was shearing in Carmel.
ARST His name was Nabal; he was a descendant of Caleb. His wife Abigail was a wise and beautiful woman, but Nabal was very cruel and treated people very unkindly. BSB BSB: His name was Nabal, and his wife’s name was Abigail. She was an intelligent and beautiful woman, but her husband, a Calebite, was harsh and evil in his dealings.
ARST One day while David and his men were in the desert, someone told him that Nabal was cutting the wool from his sheep. BSB BSB: While David was in the wilderness, he heard that Nabal was shearing sheep.
ARST So David told ten of his men,“Go to Nabal at Carmel and greet him for me. BSB BSB: So David sent ten young men and instructed them, “Go up to Nabal at Carmel. Greet him in my name
ARST Then tell him this message from me:‘I wish that things may go well for you and your family and for everything that you possess. BSB BSB: and say to him, ‘Long life to you, and peace to you and to your house and to all that belongs to you.
ARST I heard people say that you are cutting the wool from your sheep. Previously, when your shepherds were among us, we did not harm them. All the time that your shepherds were among us at Camel, we did not steal any sheep from them. BSB BSB: Now I hear that it is time for shearing. When your shepherds were with us, we did not harass them, and nothing of theirs was missing the whole time they were in Carmel.
ARST You can ask your servants if this is true, and they will tell you that it is true. We have come here at a time when you are celebrating, so I ask you to please be kind to us and give these men whatever extra food you have, for me, David, and my men to eat.’” BSB BSB: Ask your young men, and they will tell you. So let my young men find favor with you, for we have come on the day of a feast. Please give whatever you can spare to your servants and to your son David.’”
ARST When David’ s men arrived where Nabal was, they gave David’ s message to him, and they waited for him to reply. BSB BSB: When David’s young men arrived, they relayed all these words to Nabal on behalf of David. Then they waited.
ARST But Nabal spoke harshly to them,“Who does this man, this son of Jesse, think that he is? There are many slaves who are running away from their masters at the present time, and it seems to me that he is just one of them. BSB BSB: But Nabal asked them, “Who is David? Who is this son of Jesse? Many servants these days are breaking away from their masters.
ARST I give bread and water to the men who are cutting the wool from my sheep, and I give them meat from animals that I have slaughtered. Why should I take some of those things and give them to a group of outlaws?” BSB BSB: Why should I take my bread and water and the meat I have slaughtered for my shearers, and give them to these men whose origin I do not know?”
ARST Then David’ s men returned and told him what Nabal had said. BSB BSB: So David’s men turned around and went back, and they relayed to him all these words.
ARST When David heard this, he told his men,“We are going to kill Nabal; fasten your swords!” So he fastened on his sword, and about four hundred men fastened their swords and went with him. There were two hundred of his men who stayed with their supplies. BSB BSB: And David said to his men, “Strap on your swords!” So David and all his men strapped on their swords, and about four hundred men followed David, while two hundred stayed with the supplies.
ARST One of Nabal’ s servants found out what David and his men were planning to do, so he went to Nabal’ s wife Abigail and said to her,“David sent some messengers from the desert to greet our master Nabal, but Nabal only yelled at them. BSB BSB: Meanwhile, one of Nabal’s young men informed Nabal’s wife Abigail, “Look, David sent messengers from the wilderness to greet our master, but he screamed at them.
ARST All the time that we were in the fields close to them, those men of David were very kind to us. They did not harm us. They did not steal anything from us. BSB BSB: Yet these men were very good to us. When we were in the field, we were not harassed, and nothing of ours went missing the whole time we lived among them.
ARST They protected us during the daytime and during the night. They were like a wall around us to protect us while we were taking care of our sheep. BSB BSB: They were a wall around us, both day and night, the whole time we were herding our sheep near them.
ARST So now you should think about it and decide what you can do. If you do not do something, terrible things will happen to our master and to all his family. Nabal is an extremely wicked man, so he will not listen to anyone who tries to tell him what to do.” BSB BSB: Now consider carefully what you must do, because disaster looms over our master and all his household. For he is such a scoundrel that nobody can speak to him!”
ARST When Abigail heard that, she very quickly gathered two hundred loaves of bread, and also got two leather bags full of wine, the meat from five sheep, a bushel of roasted grain, a hundred packs of raisins, and two hundred packs of dried figs. She put all those things on donkeys. 20 ARST Abigail rode on her donkey and came down to the place in the hills where David and his men were staying. Suddenly David and his men met her. BSB BSB: As Abigail came riding her donkey into a mountain ravine, she saw David and his men coming down toward her, and she met them.
ARST David had been saying to his men,“It was useless for us to protect that man and all his possessions here in this wilderness. We did not steal anything that belonged to him, but he has acted badly toward me in return for our good actions toward him. BSB BSB: Now David had just said, “In vain I have protected all that belonged to this man in the wilderness. Nothing that belongs to him has gone missing, yet he has paid me back evil for good.
ARST I hope that God will strike me and kill me if he or even one male person belonging to him is still alive tomorrow morning!” BSB BSB: May God punish David, and ever so severely, if I let one male belonging to Nabal survive until morning.”
ARST When Abigail saw David, she quickly got down from her donkey and bowed before him, with her face touching the ground. BSB BSB: When Abigail saw David, she quickly got off the donkey, fell facedown, and bowed before him.
ARST Then she prostrated herself at David’ s feet and said to him,“Sir, I deserve to be punished for what my husband has done. Please listen to what I say to you. BSB BSB: She fell at his feet and said, “My lord, may the blame be on me alone, but please let your servant speak to you; hear the words of your servant.
ARST Please do not pay attention to what this worthless man Nabal has said. His name means‘fool,’ and he surely is a foolish man. But I, who am willing to be your servant, did not see the messengers whom you sent to him. BSB BSB: My lord should pay no attention to this scoundrel Nabal, for he lives up to his name: His name means Fool, and folly accompanies him. I, your servant, did not see my lord’s young men whom you sent.
ARST Yahweh has prevented you from getting revenge on anyone and killing anyone. I hope that just as surely as Yahweh lives and as surely as you live, your enemies will be cursed like Nabal is. BSB BSB: Now, my lord, as surely as the LORD lives and you yourself live, since the LORD has held you back from bloodshed and from avenging yourself with your own hand, may your enemies and those who seek harm for my lord be like Nabal.
ARST I have brought a gift for you and for the men who are with you. BSB BSB: Now let this gift your servant has brought to my lord be given to the young men who follow you.
ARST Please forgive me if I have done anything wrong to you. Yahweh will surely reward you by allowing many of your descendants to become kings of Israel, because you are fighting the battles that Yahweh wants you to fight. And I know that throughout all your life you have not done anything wrong. BSB BSB: Please forgive your servant’s offense, for the LORD will surely make a lasting dynasty for my lord, because he fights the LORD’s battles. May no evil be found in you as long as you live.
ARST Even when those who are trying to kill you pursue you, you are safe because Yahweh your God takes care of you. You will be protected like a bundle that is safely tied up. But your enemies will disappear like stones that are hurled from a sling. BSB BSB: And should someone pursue you and seek your life, then the life of my lord will be bound securely by the LORD your God in the bundle of the living. But He shall fling away the lives of your enemies like stones from a sling.
ARST Yahweh has promised to do good things for you, and he will do what he has promised. And he will cause you to become the ruler of the Israelite people. BSB BSB: When the LORD has done for my lord all the good He promised, and when He has appointed you ruler over Israel,
ARST When that happens, you will be glad that you did not kill any people in Nabal’ s household. You will not think that you deserve to be punished for having punished and killed innocent people. And when Yahweh enables you to successfully become the king, please do not forget to be kind to me.” BSB BSB: then my lord will have no remorse or guilt of conscience over needless bloodshed and revenge. And when the LORD has dealt well with my lord, may you remember your servant.”
ARST David replied to Abigail,“I praise Yahweh, the God whom we Israelites worship, because he sent you to talk with me. BSB BSB: Then David said to Abigail, “Blessed be the LORD, the God of Israel, who sent you to meet me this day!
ARST I hope today God may help you because you have wisely kept me from killing people today, and from paying back evil for evil. BSB BSB: Blessed is your discernment, and blessed are you, because today you kept me from bloodshed and from avenging myself by my own hand.
ARST Just as surely as Yahweh the God whom we Israelites worship is alive, he has prevented me from harming you. If you had not come quickly to talk to me, neither Nabal nor even one of Nabal’ s men or boys would be still alive tomorrow morning.” BSB BSB: Otherwise, as surely as the LORD, the God of Israel, lives, who has restrained me from harming you, if you had not come quickly to meet me, then surely no male belonging to Nabal would have been left alive by morning light.”
ARST Then David accepted the gifts that Abigail had brought to him. He said to her,“I hope that things may go well for you. I have heard what you said, and I will do what you have requested.” BSB BSB: Then David accepted from her hand what she had brought him, and he said to her, “Go home in peace. See, I have heeded your voice and granted your request.”
ARST When Abigail returned to Nabal, he was in his house, having a big celebration like kings have. He was very drunk and feeling very happy. 37 ARST The next morning, when he was no longer drunk, she told him everything that had happened when she talked with David. Immediately, he had a stroke and could no longer move. BSB BSB: In the morning when Nabal was sober, his wife told him about these events, and his heart failed within him, and he became like a stone.
ARST About ten days later Yahweh struck him again, and he died. BSB BSB: About ten days later, the LORD struck Nabal dead.
ARST After David heard that Nabal was dead, he said,“I praise Yahweh! Nabal insulted me, but Yahweh has shown that I have been right. He has prevented me from doing anything wrong. And he has punished Nabal for the wrong that he did.” Then David sent messengers to Abigail, to ask her if she would become his wife. BSB BSB: On hearing that Nabal was dead, David said, “Blessed be the LORD, who has upheld my cause against the reproach of Nabal and has restrained His servant from evil. For the LORD has brought the wickedness of Nabal down upon his own head.” Then David sent word to Abigail, asking her to become his wife.
