1 ARST Yahweh gave me another message. He said, BSB BSB: And the word of the LORD came to me, saying,
2 ARST “You, son of man, this is what I, Yahweh the Lord, say to the people of Israel: All of Israel, everything within its borders, will soon be destroyed. BSB BSB: “O son of man, this is what the Lord GOD says to the land of Israel: ‘The end! The end has come upon the four corners of the land.
3 ARST You people of Israel, the end has come. I will punish you severely. I will judge you for all the wicked things that you have done, and pay you back for your disgusting behavior. BSB BSB: The end is now upon you, and I will unleash My anger against you. I will judge you according to your ways and repay you for all your abominations.
4 ARST I will not pity you or act mercifully toward you. I will surely punish you for your wicked behavior. Then you will know that it has happened because I, Yahweh, have done it. BSB BSB: I will not look on you with pity, nor will I spare you, but I will punish you for your ways and for the abominations among you. Then you will know that I am the LORD.’
5 ARST This is also what Yahweh the Lord says: You will soon experience many terrible disasters! BSB BSB: This is what the Lord GOD says: ‘Disaster! An unprecedented disaster—behold, it is coming!
6 ARST This will be the end of Israel; your country will be finished! And your lives will be ended! BSB BSB: The end has come! The end has come! It has roused itself against you. Behold, it has come!
7 ARST It will be the end of you people who live in the land of Israel. The time has come; the day when you will be destroyed is near. At that time the people who worship idols on the mountains will not be happy; they will panic. BSB BSB: Doom has come to you, O inhabitants of the land. The time has come; the day is near; there is panic on the mountains instead of shouts of joy.
8 ARST I am very angry with you and am about to pour out my punishment on you. I will judge you for all the wicked things that you have done and pay you back for your disgusting behavior. BSB BSB: Very soon I will pour out My wrath upon you and vent My anger against you; I will judge you according to your ways and repay you for all your abominations.
9 ARST I will not pity you or act mercifully toward you. I will surely punish you for your wicked behavior. Then you will know that it is I, Yahweh, who have punished you. BSB BSB: I will not look on you with pity, nor will I spare you, but I will punish you for your ways and for the abominations among you. Then you will know that it is I, the LORD, who strikes the blow.
10 ARST The day of your punishment is here! It has arrived! Disasters have come as a result of your pride. BSB BSB: Behold, the day is here! It has come! Doom has gone out, the rod has budded, arrogance has bloomed.
11 ARST People are acting violently and doing more wicked things. And nothing that belongs to those people will be left, none of their money, and they will not be respected by anyone. BSB BSB: Their violence has grown into a rod to punish their wickedness. None of them will remain: none of their multitude, none of their wealth, and nothing of value.
12 ARST Now is the time; that day has arrived. People who buy things should not rejoice because they bought things very cheaply and those who sell things should not be sad because they had to sell things cheaply, because Yahweh will be punishing everyone. BSB BSB: The time has come; the day has arrived. Let the buyer not rejoice and the seller not mourn, for wrath is upon the whole multitude.
13 ARST People who sell some of their property will never be able to buy it back— they will not even be able to return to see it; because they have sinned, not one of them will succeed in staying alive. BSB BSB: The seller will surely not recover what he sold while both remain alive. For the vision concerning the whole multitude will not be revoked, and because of their iniquity, not one of them will preserve his life.
14 ARST Your commanders will blow trumpets to get the army ready to fight, but no one will respond, because I will be angry at all the people. BSB BSB: They have blown the trumpet and made everything ready, but no one goes to war, for My wrath is upon the whole multitude.
15 ARST When those things happen, your enemies will be outside the city with their swords, and there will be plagues and famines inside the city. Those who are caught outside of the city in the fields will be killed by their enemies’ swords, and those who are in the city will die from famines and plagues. BSB BSB: The sword is outside; plague and famine are within. Those in the country will die by the sword, and those in the city will be devoured by famine and plague.
16 ARST Those who survive and escape will flee to the mountains, and they all will moan because of their sins, as pigeons moan. BSB BSB: The survivors will escape and live in the mountains, moaning like doves of the valley, each for his own iniquity.
17 ARST Because they will be very afraid, all the people’ s hands will become limp and weak, and their knees will become very weak and unable to hold them up. BSB BSB: Every hand will go limp, and every knee will turn to water.
18 ARST They will put on clothes made from rough cloth, and they will be terrified. Their faces will show that they are ashamed, and they will shave their heads to show that they are very sad. BSB BSB: They will put on sackcloth, and terror will overwhelm them. Shame will cover all their faces, and all their heads will be shaved.
19 ARST They will throw their silver into the streets, and consider their gold the same way they would consider garbage, because they will realize that their silver and gold will not be able to rescue them when Yahweh punishes them. They will not be able to buy food to fill their stomachs, because having a lot of gold and silver has led them to sin. BSB BSB: They will throw their silver into the streets, and their gold will seem unclean. Their silver and gold cannot save them in the day of the wrath of the LORD. They cannot satisfy their appetites or fill their stomachs with wealth, for it became the stumbling block that brought their iniquity.
20 ARST They were proud, so they used their beautiful jewelry to make detestable and disgusting idols of their false gods. So I will make them see how disgusting and unacceptable these things are. BSB BSB: His beautiful ornaments they transformed into pride and used them to fashion their vile images and detestable idols. Therefore I will make these into something unclean for them.
21 ARST I will give their silver and gold to foreigners who invade your country and take away your valuable treasures. I will give those things to wicked people, and I will not interfere when they will do disgraceful things to the things that they take. BSB BSB: And I will hand these things over as plunder to foreigners and loot to the wicked of the earth, who will defile them.
22 ARST I will allow robbers to enter the temple I love and protect, and they will desecrate it. BSB BSB: I will turn My face away from them, and they will defile My treasured place. Violent men will enter it, and they will defile it.
23 ARST Prepare chains to be fastened on you when your enemies capture you as punishment because the people throughout the country are committing murder, and people in the city are being violent. BSB BSB: Forge the chain, for the land is full of crimes of bloodshed, and the city is full of violence.
24 ARST So I will bring armies of the nations whose people are extremely wicked to take the houses of the Israelite people. I will make Israelite people realize that they are to no longer be proud. Your enemies will cause your places of worship to no longer be acceptable to be used. BSB BSB: So I will bring the most wicked of nations to take possession of their houses. I will end the pride of the mighty, and their holy places will be profaned.
25 ARST When your enemies cause you to be terrified, you will plead for them to make peace, but there will be no peace. BSB BSB: Anguish is coming! They will seek peace, but find none.
26 ARST You will experience many disasters, and you will continually hear rumors about disasters that are happening in other places. People will plead with prophets to tell them what visions they have received, but the prophets will not have received any visions. Priests will no longer teach people the laws that I gave to Moses. Even the wise older people will not have any answers. BSB BSB: Disaster upon disaster will come, and rumor after rumor. Then they will seek a vision from a prophet, but instruction from the priests will perish, as will counsel from the elders.
27 ARST Your king will mourn, and his son will no longer expect that good things will happen. The hands of people throughout the country will tremble. And I will do to them what they deserve for their wicked behavior. I will judge and condemn them the same way they have judged and condemned others. Then they will know that I, Yahweh, have the power to do what I say that I will do.” BSB BSB: The king will mourn, the prince will be clothed with despair, and the hands of the people of the land will tremble. I will deal with them according to their conduct, and I will judge them by their own standards. Then they will know that I am the LORD.’”
