ARST So she told Abram,“Please listen{ to this}:{ As you know,} Yahweh has not allowed me to have{ any} children,{ so} please have{ marital} relations with my servant woman{ Hagar}{ so that} maybe I can have a family through her{ children}.” Abram agreed to do what Sarai requested. BSB BSB: So Sarai said to Abram, “Look now, the LORD has prevented me from bearing children. Please go to my maidservant; perhaps I can build a family by her.” And Abram listened to the voice of Sarai.
ARST So Abram’ s wife Sarai gave her Egyptian servant Hagar to her husband Abram to be his{ second} wife.{ This happened} after Abram{ and Sarai} had lived in the region of Canaan for ten years. BSB BSB: So after he had lived in Canaan for ten years, his wife Sarai took her Egyptian maidservant Hagar and gave her to Abram to be his wife.
ARST Then Abram had{ marital} relations with Hagar, and she became pregnant. But when she realized that she was pregnant, she started to disrespect her mistress{ Sarai}. BSB BSB: And he slept with Hagar, and she conceived. But when Hagar realized that she was pregnant, she began to despise her mistress.
ARST So Sarai complained to Abram,“It is your fault that I am suffering! I gave my servant to you{ to sleep with}, but now that she realizes that she is pregnant, she disrespects me! I ask Yahweh to judge whether it is you or I who is responsible{ for this}!” BSB BSB: Then Sarai said to Abram, “May the wrong done to me be upon you! I delivered my servant into your arms, and ever since she saw that she was pregnant, she has treated me with contempt. May the LORD judge between you and me.”
ARST Abram replied to her,“Listen, you are in charge of your servant. Do with her what{ ever} you think is best.” Then Sarai treated Hagar so harshly that she ran away{ from home to get away} from her. BSB BSB: “Here,” said Abram, “your servant is in your hands. Do whatever you want with her.” Then Sarai treated Hagar so harshly that she fled from her.
ARST And the angel asked{ her},“Hagar, who serves Sarai, where are you coming from, and where are you headed?” She answered{ him},“I am running away from my mistress Sarai.” BSB BSB: “Hagar, servant of Sarai,” he said, “where have you come from, and where are you going?” “I am running away from my mistress Sarai,” she replied.
ARST But Yahweh’ s angel told her,“Go back{ home} to your mistress and{ humbly} obey her{ as her servant}.” BSB BSB: So the angel of the LORD told her, “Return to your mistress and submit to her authority.”
ARST Then the angel added,“I{ Yahweh} will give you so many descendants that no one will be able to count them all, because there will be so many of them.” BSB BSB: Then the angel added, “I will greatly multiply your offspring so that they will be too numerous to count.”
ARST Then the angel{ also} told her,“Listen,{ as you know,} you are pregnant. You will have a son, and you are to name him Ishmael,{ which means“God listens,”} because Yahweh listened to you when you were suffering{ and has helped you}. BSB BSB: The angel of the LORD proceeded: “Behold, you have conceived and will bear a son. And you shall name him Ishmael, for the LORD has heard your cry of affliction.
ARST { When Ishmael grows up,} he will be{ proud and free}{ like} a wild donkey. He will fight against everyone, and everyone will fight against him. In fact, he will{ even} be hostile toward all his relatives.” BSB BSB: He will be a wild donkey of a man, and his hand will be against everyone, and everyone’s hand against him; he will live in hostility toward all his brothers.”
ARST After Yahweh spoke to Hagar, she called him El Roi,{ which means“the God who sees.”}{ She named him that,} because she had exclaimed{ to herself},“I just now saw the back of{ God who} sees me!” BSB BSB: So Hagar gave this name to the LORD who had spoken to her: “You are the God who sees me,” for she said, “Here I have seen the One who sees me!”
ARST That is why the name of that well is Beer Lahai Roi,{ which means“Well of the Living One, who sees me.”} It is{ still} there between{ the cities of} Kadesh and Bered. BSB BSB: Therefore the well was called Beer-lahai-roi. It is located between Kadesh and Bered.
ARST Then Hagar{ returned home and} gave birth to a son for Abram, and Abram named his son Ishmael. BSB BSB: And Hagar bore Abram a son, and Abram gave the name Ishmael to the son she had borne.
ARST Abram{ was} 86 years old when Hagar had Ishmael for him. BSB BSB: Abram was eighty-six years old when Hagar bore Ishmael to him.
