ARST On the day before the Passover celebration would begin, Jesus knew that it was the time for him to leave this world and to return to his Father. He always loved his disciples who were with him in this world, and he loved them to the uttermost. BSB BSB: It was now just before the Passover Feast, and Jesus knew that His hour had come to leave this world and return to the Father. Having loved His own who were in the world, He loved them to the very end.
ARST When Jesus and his disciples were having their evening meal, the devil had already caused Judas, Simon Iscariot’ s son, to think that he should help the Jewish leaders arrest Jesus. BSB BSB: The evening meal was underway, and the devil had already put into the heart of Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot, to betray Jesus.
ARST Jesus knew that his Father had given him complete power and authority over everything, and he also knew that he came from God and would soon return to God. BSB BSB: Jesus knew that the Father had delivered all things into His hands, and that He had come from God and was returning to God.
ARST { Because he knew those things,} Jesus got up from the table where they were eating the evening meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist. BSB BSB: So He got up from the supper, laid aside His outer garments, and wrapped a towel around His waist.
ARST He poured some water into a large bowl and started washing his disciples’ feet and wiping them dry with the towel that he had wrapped around his waist. BSB BSB: After that, He poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet and dry them with the towel that was around Him.

ARST Jesus replied to him,“Right now you do not understand what I am doing, but later you will understand.” BSB BSB: Jesus replied, “You do not realize now what I am doing, but later you will understand.”
ARST Peter said,“You will surely never wash my feet!” Jesus replied to him,“If I do not wash you, then you will not inherit God’ s blessings with me.” BSB BSB: “Never shall You wash my feet!” Peter told Him. Jesus answered, “Unless I wash you, you have no part with Me.”
ARST Simon Peter told him,“Lord, do not wash my feet only! Wash my hands and my head also!” BSB BSB: “Then, Lord,” Simon Peter replied, “not only my feet, but my hands and my head as well!”
ARST Jesus told him,“Anyone whom someone has washed only needs to wash his feet. The rest of his body is clean. You disciples are clean, but not all{ of you are clean}.” BSB BSB: Jesus told him, “Whoever has already bathed needs only to wash his feet, and he will be completely clean. And you are clean, though not all of you.”
ARST ({ Jesus said this about being spiritually clean,} because he knew who was going to help the Jewish leaders arrest him. That is the reason he said,“Not all of you are clean.”) BSB BSB: For He knew who would betray Him. That is why He said, “Not all of you are clean.”
ARST After he finished washing their feet, he put his outer clothing on again. Then he sat down at the table again and told them,“You must understand what I have just done for you! BSB BSB: When Jesus had washed their feet and put on His outer garments, He reclined with them again and asked, “Do you know what I have done for you?
ARST You rightly call me‘Teacher’ and‘Lord,’ because that is what I am. BSB BSB: You call Me Teacher and Lord, and rightly so, because I am.
ARST Since I, your teacher and Lord, have{ humbly served you by} washing your feet, you also should{ humbly serve each other by} washing each other’ s feet. BSB BSB: So if I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet.
ARST { By washing your feet} I have given you an example to follow in order that you should{ humbly serve each other} as I have{ humbly} served you. BSB BSB: I have set you an example so that you should do as I have done for you.
ARST I am telling you the truth: Just as a servant is not more important than his master, nor is a messenger more important than the person who has sent him,{ you are not more important than me}. BSB BSB: Truly, truly, I tell you, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him.
ARST Since you now know{ that you should humbly serve each other}, God will bless you if you do so. BSB BSB: If you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them.
ARST I am not saying that all of you will be blessed. I know well the people whom I have chosen{ to be my disciples}. However, what is about to happen must take place in order that what a prophet wrote in scripture can come true:‘The one who shared a meal with me as a friend has opposed me.’ BSB BSB: I am not speaking about all of you; I know whom I have chosen. But this is to fulfill the Scripture: ‘The one who shares My bread has lifted up his heel against Me.’
ARST From now on I am telling you what will happen before it happens in order that, when it does happen, you may trust that I am{ God}. BSB BSB: I am telling you now before it happens, so that when it comes to pass, you will believe that I am He.
ARST I am telling you the truth: Whoever accepts the one I send out also accepts me; and whoever accepts me also accepts my Father who sent me.” BSB BSB: Truly, truly, I tell you, whoever receives the one I send receives Me, and whoever receives Me receives the One who sent Me.”
ARST After Jesus said this, he felt disturbed. He solemnly declared,“I am telling you the truth: One of you is going to give me up{ to my opponents}.” BSB BSB: After Jesus had said this, He became troubled in spirit and testified, “Truly, truly, I tell you, one of you will betray Me.”

ARST Simon Peter made a gesture to him to indicate that he should ask Jesus which disciple he was talking about. BSB BSB: So Simon Peter motioned to him to ask Jesus which one He was talking about.
ARST So John leaned back against Jesus and{ quietly} asked him,“Lord, who is the one who will betray you?” BSB BSB: Leaning back against Jesus, he asked, “Lord, who is it?”
ARST Jesus replied,“It is the man to whom I will give this piece of bread after I dip it in the bowl.” Then he dipped the bread in the bowl and gave it to Judas, Simon Iscariot’ s son. BSB BSB: Jesus answered, “It is the one to whom I give this morsel after I have dipped it.” Then He dipped the morsel and gave it to Judas son of Simon Iscariot.
ARST As soon as Judas took the piece of bread from Jesus, Satan took control of him. Jesus then told him,“Do quickly what you have planned to do.” BSB BSB: And when Judas had taken the morsel, Satan entered into him. Then Jesus said to Judas, “What you are about to do, do quickly.”
ARST (No one else among those sitting at the table knew why Jesus had said that to Judas. BSB BSB: But no one at the table knew why Jesus had said this to him.
ARST Some of them thought that Jesus was telling him to go and buy some things that they needed for the Passover celebration or to give some money to the poor.{ They thought this} because Judas had the bag that held their money.) BSB BSB: Since Judas kept the money bag, some thought that Jesus was telling him to buy what was needed for the feast, or to give something to the poor.
ARST So after Judas took the bread from Jesus, he immediately went out.(It was night.) BSB BSB: As soon as he had received the morsel, Judas went out into the night.
ARST So after Judas left, Jesus said,“Now God has shown people how great I, the Son of Man, am. I have also shown people how great God is. BSB BSB: When Judas had gone out, Jesus said, “Now the Son of Man is glorified, and God is glorified in Him.
ARST God himself will show{ people} how great I, the Son of Man, am, and he will do this right away. BSB BSB: If God is glorified in Him, God will also glorify the Son in Himself—and will glorify Him at once.
ARST { You whom I love as though you were my} children, I will be with you only a little while longer. Then you will look for me, but it will be just like I told the Jewish leaders and am telling you now: You will not be able to come to the place where I am going. BSB BSB: Little children, I am with you only a little while longer. You will look for Me, and as I said to the Jews, so now I say to you: ‘Where I am going, you cannot come.’
ARST If you love each other, everyone{ who sees that love} will know that you are my disciples.” BSB BSB: By this everyone will know that you are My disciples, if you love one another.”
ARST Simon Peter said to him,“Lord, where are you going?” Jesus replied,“You cannot go with me now to the place where I am going, but you will go there later.” BSB BSB: “Lord, where are You going?” Simon Peter asked. Jesus answered, “Where I am going, you cannot follow Me now, but you will follow later.”
ARST Peter told him,“Lord, why can’ t I go with you now? I am willing to die for you!” BSB BSB: “Lord,” said Peter, “why can’t I follow You now? I will lay down my life for You.”
ARST Jesus replied,“You are not really willing to die for me! I am telling you the truth: You will surely say three times that you do not know me before the rooster crows{ in the morning}!” BSB BSB: “Will you lay down your life for Me?” Jesus replied. “Truly, truly, I tell you, before the rooster crows, you will deny Me three times.
