ARST Jesus entered Jericho and was going through the city. BSB BSB: Then Jesus entered Jericho and was passing through.
ARST There was a man there named Zacchaeus. He was in charge of collecting taxes, and he was very rich. BSB BSB: And there was a man named Zacchaeus, a chief tax collector, who was very wealthy.
ARST He wanted to see Jesus, but he could not see him over the crowd. He was a very short man{ and there were many people around Jesus}. BSB BSB: He was trying to see who Jesus was, but could not see over the crowd because he was small in stature.
ARST So he ran farther down the road. He climbed a sycamore fig tree so he could see Jesus when he came by. BSB BSB: So he ran on ahead and climbed a sycamore tree to see Him, since Jesus was about to pass that way.
ARST When Jesus got there, he looked up and said to him,“Zacchaeus, come down quickly, I have to stay at your house tonight!” BSB BSB: When Jesus came to that place, He looked up and said, “Zacchaeus, hurry down, for I must stay at your house today.”
ARST So he came down quickly. He was glad to welcome Jesus into his home. BSB BSB: So Zacchaeus hurried down and welcomed Him joyfully.
ARST But the people who saw Jesus go there grumbled, saying,“He has gone to be the guest of a real sinner!” BSB BSB: And all who saw this began to grumble, saying, “He has gone to be the guest of a sinful man!”
ARST Then Zacchaeus stood up while they were eating and said to Jesus,“Lord, I want you to know that I am going to give half of what I own to poor people. And as for the people whom I have cheated, I will pay them back four times the amount I took from them.” BSB BSB: But Zacchaeus stood up and said to the Lord, “Look, Lord, half of my possessions I give to the poor, and if I have cheated anyone, I will repay it fourfold.”
ARST Jesus said to him,“Today God has saved this household, because this man has shown that he is a true descendant of Abraham. BSB BSB: Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, because this man too is a son of Abraham.
ARST Remember this: I, the Son of Man, came to find and save people{ like you} who have been disobeying God.” BSB BSB: For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.”
ARST The people were listening to everything Jesus said. He was getting close to Jerusalem{, and he knew that the people had a wrong idea}. They thought he would begin to rule as king over God’ s people as soon as he got to Jerusalem. So Jesus decided to tell them another story{ to correct that idea}. BSB BSB: While the people were listening to this, Jesus proceeded to tell them a parable, because He was near Jerusalem and they thought the kingdom of God would appear imminently.
ARST He said,“A prince was preparing to go to a distant country so that a higher king could give him the right to rule over the country where he lived. After he received it, he would come back to rule his people. BSB BSB: So He said, “A man of noble birth went to a distant country to lay claim to his kingship and then return.
ARST { Before he left,} he summoned ten of his servants. He gave each of them an equal amount of money. He said to them,‘Do business with this money until I return!’{ Then he left.} BSB BSB: Beforehand, he called ten of his servants and gave them ten minas. ‘Conduct business with this until I return,’ he said.
ARST But many people of his country hated him. So they sent some messengers to follow him and say{ to the higher king},‘We do not want this man to be our king!’ BSB BSB: But his subjects hated him and sent a delegation after him to say, ‘We do not want this man to rule over us.’
ARST { But he was made king anyway. Later} he returned as the new king. Then he called in the servants to whom he had given the money. He wanted to know how much they had gained by doing business with the money he had given them. BSB BSB: When he returned from procuring his kingship, he summoned the servants to whom he had given the money, to find out what each one had earned.
ARST The first servant came to him and said,‘Sir, with your money I have earned ten times as much!’ BSB BSB: The first servant came forward and said, ‘Master, your mina has produced ten more minas.’
ARST He said to this man,‘You are a good servant! You have done very well! Because you have faithfully taken care of a small amount of money, I will give you ten cities to rule over.’ BSB BSB: His master replied, ‘Well done, good servant! Because you have been faithful in a very small matter, you shall have authority over ten cities.’
ARST Then the second servant came and said,‘Sir, the money you gave me is now worth five times as much!’ BSB BSB: The second servant came and said, ‘Master, your mina has made five minas.’
ARST He also said to that servant,‘{ Well done!} I will put you over five cities.’ BSB BSB: And to this one he said, ‘You shall have authority over five cities.’
ARST Then another servant came. He said,‘Sir, here is your money. I wrapped it up in a cloth and hid it to keep it safe. BSB BSB: Then another servant came and said, ‘Master, here is your mina, which I have laid away in a piece of cloth.
ARST I was afraid that you would take everything I earned. I know you are a hard man who takes things from others that do not really belong to you. You are like a farmer who harvests grain that another farmer has planted.’ BSB BSB: For I was afraid of you, because you are a harsh man. You withdraw what you did not deposit and reap what you did not sow.’
ARST He said to that servant,‘You wicked servant! I will condemn you by the words you just said. You said I am a hard man. You said I take what does not belong to me. You said I am like a farmer who harvests what another farmer has planted. BSB BSB: His master replied, ‘You wicked servant, I will judge you by your own words. So you knew that I am a harsh man, withdrawing what I did not deposit and reaping what I did not sow?
ARST So you should at least have given my money to money lenders! Then when I returned I could have collected that amount plus the interest it would have earned!’ BSB BSB: Why then did you not deposit my money in the bank, and upon my return I could have collected it with interest?’
ARST Then the king said to those who were standing near,‘Take the money from him and give it to the servant who made ten times as much!’ BSB BSB: Then he told those standing by, ‘Take the mina from him and give it to the one who has ten minas.’
ARST They protested,‘But sir, he already has a lot of money!’ BSB BSB: ‘Master,’ they said, ‘he already has ten!’
ARST But the king said,‘I tell you this: To the people who use well what they have received, I will give even more. But from the people who do not use well what they have received, I will take away even what they already have. BSB BSB: He replied, ‘I tell you that everyone who has will be given more; but the one who does not have, even what he has will be taken away from him.
ARST Now, as for those enemies of mine who did not want me to rule over them, bring them here and execute them while I am watching!’” BSB BSB: And these enemies of mine who were unwilling for me to rule over them, bring them here and slay them in front of me.’”
ARST After Jesus said those things, he traveled farther along on the road up to Jerusalem. BSB BSB: After Jesus had said this, He went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem.
ARST When they got close to the villages of Bethphage and Bethany, near the Mount of Olives, he sent two of his disciples on ahead. BSB BSB: As He approached Bethphage and Bethany at the Mount of Olives, He sent out two of His disciples,
ARST He told them,“Go to the village just ahead of you. As you enter it, there you will see a young donkey tied up that no one has ever ridden. Untie it and bring it to me. BSB BSB: saying, “Go into the village ahead of you, and as you enter it, you will find a colt tied there, on which no one has ever sat. Untie it and bring it here.
ARST If anyone asks you,‘Why are you untying the donkey?’ say to him,‘Jesus needs it.’” BSB BSB: If anyone asks, ‘Why are you untying it?’ tell him, ‘The Lord needs it.’”
ARST So the two disciples went to the village and found the donkey, just as Jesus had told them. BSB BSB: So those who were sent went out and found it just as Jesus had told them.
ARST As they were untying it, its owners said to them,“Why are you untying our donkey?” BSB BSB: As they were untying the colt, its owners asked, “Why are you untying the colt?”
ARST They replied,“Jesus needs it.” And the owners gave them permission to use it. BSB BSB: “The Lord needs it,” they answered.
ARST Then the disciples brought the donkey to Jesus. They threw their robes on the donkey’ s back and helped Jesus get on it. BSB BSB: Then they led the colt to Jesus, threw their cloaks over it, and put Jesus on it.
ARST Then, as he rode along, others spread their robes on the road in front of him to honor him. BSB BSB: As He rode along, the people spread their cloaks on the road.
ARST As Jesus approached the road that goes down from the Mount of Olives, the whole crowd of his disciples began to praise God with loud, joyful shouts for all the great miracles that they had seen him do. BSB BSB: And as He approached the descent from the Mount of Olives, the whole multitude of disciples began to praise God joyfully in a loud voice for all the miracles they had seen:
ARST They were saying things like,“May God bless our king who comes with God’ s authority! May there be peace between God in heaven and us his people, and may everyone praise God!” BSB BSB: “Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord!” “Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!”
ARST Some of the Pharisees who were in the crowd said to him,“Teacher, tell your disciples to stop saying those things!” BSB BSB: But some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to Him, “Teacher, rebuke Your disciples!”
ARST He replied,“I tell you this: If these people were silent, the stones themselves would shout to praise me!” BSB BSB: “I tell you,” He answered, “if they remain silent, the very stones will cry out.”
ARST When Jesus came near to Jerusalem and saw the city, he cried about its people. BSB BSB: As Jesus approached Jerusalem and saw the city, He wept over it
ARST He said,“I wish that today you people knew how to have God’ s peace. But now you are unable to know this. BSB BSB: and said, “If only you had known on this day what would bring you peace! But now it is hidden from your eyes.
ARST I want you to know this: You are going to experience difficult times. Your enemies will come and set up a barricade around your city. They will surround the city and attack it on all sides. BSB BSB: For the days will come upon you when your enemies will barricade you and surround you and hem you in on every side.
ARST They will{ break through the walls and} destroy them and the rest of the city. They will kill all of you. They will completely demolish everything. All this will happen because you did not recognize the time when God came to save you!” BSB BSB: They will level you to the ground—you and the children within your walls. They will not leave one stone on another, because you did not recognize the time of your visitation from God.”
ARST Jesus entered Jerusalem and went into the temple courtyard. He began to force the people who were selling things there to leave. BSB BSB: Then Jesus entered the temple courts and began to drive out those who were selling there.
ARST He told them,“The Scriptures say,‘God’ s temple should be a place where people pray.’ But you have made it‘a hideout for thieves’!” BSB BSB: He declared to them, “It is written: ‘My house will be a house of prayer.’ But you have made it ‘a den of robbers.’”
ARST Each day during that week, Jesus was teaching people at the temple. The chief priests, the teachers of religious laws, and other Jewish leaders were trying to find a way to kill him. BSB BSB: Jesus was teaching at the temple every day, but the chief priests, scribes, and leaders of the people were intent on killing Him.
ARST But they did not find any way to do it, because very many people were eager to hear him. BSB BSB: Yet they could not find a way to do so, because all the people hung on His words.
