2. 2ARSTAbraham was the father of Isaac. Isaac was the father of Jacob. Jacob was the father of Judah and Judah’ s{ older and younger} brothers.BSBBSB: Abraham was the father of Isaac, Isaac the father of Jacob, and Jacob the father of Judah and his brothers.
3. 3ARSTJudah was the father of Perez and Zerah. Their mother was Tamar. Perez was the father of Hezrom. Hezrom was the father of Aram.BSBBSB: Judah was the father of Perez and Zerah by Tamar, Perez the father of Hezron, and Hezron the father of Ram.

17. 17ARSTSo then, there are 14 ancestors when we count from Abraham to David. There are 14 ancestors when we count from David until when{ the Babylonian army took the Israelites as} captives to the country of Babylon. There are 14 ancestors when we count from that time to the Messiah.BSBBSB: In all, then, there were fourteen generations from Abraham to David, fourteen from David to the exile to Babylon, and fourteen from the exile to the Christ.
18. 18ARST{ I will tell you} what happened when the mother of Jesus the Messiah gave birth to him. His mother Mary was about to marry{ a man named} Joseph, and they had not yet had sex. Despite that, Joseph discovered that Mary was pregnant with a baby(whom the Holy Spirit had given to her).BSBBSB: This is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about: His mother Mary was pledged in marriage to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be with child through the Holy Spirit.
19. 19ARSTJoseph, who was about to marry her,{ thought that Mary had sex with another man.} Joseph usually did what was right, and he also did not want to shame Mary. So, he decided to say in private that he would not marry her.BSBBSB: Because Joseph her husband was a righteous man and was unwilling to disgrace her publicly, he resolved to divorce her quietly.
20. 20ARSTWhile Joseph was deciding what to do, he saw an angel from the Lord while he was sleeping! The angel said to him,“Joseph, King David’ s descendant, do not be reluctant to marry Mary.{ I say that} because it was the Holy Spirit who caused her to become pregnant.BSBBSB: But after he had pondered these things, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to embrace Mary as your wife, for the One conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.
21. 21ARSTShe will have a male child. You should name him‘Jesus,’{ which means‘the Lord rescues’}.{ You should name him that} because he will rescue his people from the sins that they have committed.”BSBBSB: She will give birth to a Son, and you are to give Him the name Jesus, because He will save His people from their sins.”
22. 22ARSTWhen all those things happened, what the Lord said by speaking through the prophet{ Isaiah} came true.{ Isaiah} said,BSBBSB: All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet:
23. 23ARST“A young woman who has never had sex will become pregnant! She will give birth to a male child. People will name him‘Immanuel.’” The name Immanuel means,“God is with us.”BSBBSB: “Behold, the virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call Him Immanuel” (which means, “God with us”).
24. 24ARSTAfter Joseph woke up, he married Mary, which is what the angel from the Lord had told him to do.BSBBSB: When Joseph woke up, he did as the angel of the Lord had commanded him and embraced Mary as his wife.
25. 25ARSTHowever, he did not have sex with her before she gave birth to a male child. Joseph named the child Jesus.BSBBSB: But he had no union with her until she gave birth to a Son. And he gave Him the name Jesus.
