ARST Then the earth quaked violently!{ That happened} because an angel from the Lord descended from heaven. He went to{ Jesus’ grave}. He rolled the flat stone away{ from the entrance to the grave}. Then, he sat down on the stone. BSB BSB: Suddenly there was a great earthquake, for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven, rolled away the stone, and sat on it.
ARST This angel looked as bright as lightning. His garments were pure white. BSB BSB: His appearance was like lightning, and his clothes were white as snow.
ARST The soldiers who were protecting{ the grave} trembled because they were afraid of the angel.{ They were so afraid that} they looked like they had died. BSB BSB: The guards trembled in fear of him and became like dead men.
ARST The angel told the two women,“I realize that you are looking for Jesus, whom people killed by nailing him to a cross. So, you should stop being afraid! BSB BSB: But the angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified.
ARST God made him alive again, which is what he told you{ would happen}. So, he is no longer in this place! If you walk with us, we will show you where his body was. BSB BSB: He is not here; He has risen, just as He said! Come, see the place where He lay.
ARST Then, hurry to his apprentices and tell them that God has made Jesus alive again.{ Tell them that} they should listen, and that Jesus is going ahead of them to the region of Galilee.{ Tell them that} Jesus will meet them there. I have told you{ what to say}!” BSB BSB: Then go quickly and tell His disciples, ‘He has risen from the dead and is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see Him.’ See, I have told you.”
ARST So the two women hurried away from the grave. They were afraid and also very happy. They ran{ to where Jesus’ apprentices were} to tell them{ what had happened and what the angel had said}. BSB BSB: So they hurried away from the tomb in fear and great joy, and ran to tell His disciples.
ARST { As they were running,} Jesus came up to them! He said,“Greetings!” The two women went to him and{ bowed down to} hold his feet{ to honor him}. Also, they worshiped him. BSB BSB: Suddenly Jesus met them and said, “Greetings!” They came to Him, grasped His feet, and worshiped Him.
ARST After that, Jesus told them,“You should stop being afraid! Go to my apprentices and tell them to leave for the region of Galilee. I will meet them there.” BSB BSB: “Do not be afraid,” said Jesus. “Go and tell My brothers to go to Galilee. There they will see Me.”
ARST Then, the two women went to meet{ Jesus’ apprentices}. Meanwhile, some of the soldiers{ whom the Jewish leaders had told to make sure that no one opened Jesus’ grave} entered the city of Jerusalem. They told the ruling priests about everything that had happened{ at Jesus’ grave}. BSB BSB: While the women were on their way, some of the guards went into the city and reported to the chief priests all that had happened.
ARST So, the ruling priests and the{ Jewish} leaders assembled and planned what to do. They paid those soldiers a large number of silver coins{ to bribe them}. BSB BSB: And after the chief priests had met with the elders and formed a plan, they gave the soldiers a large sum of money
ARST Suppose that the{ Roman} local ruler{, Pilate,} learns what you are telling people. In that case, we will convince{ him to refrain from punishing you}. You will not have to worry about anything.” BSB BSB: If this report reaches the governor, we will satisfy him and keep you out of trouble.”
ARST So, the soldiers accepted the silver coins. They told people what{ the ruling priests and Jewish leaders} had instructed them{ to say}. In fact, even now Jewish people continue to repeat the story that the soldiers told. BSB BSB: So the guards took the money and did as they were instructed. And this account has been circulated among the Jews to this very day.
ARST When they met him{ there}, they worshiped him. However, they were unsure{ that it really was Jesus}. BSB BSB: When they saw Him, they worshiped Him, but some doubted.
ARST Instruct them so that they do everything that I have told you{ to do}. Finally, I will be with you at all times, even up to the point when this current time period ends.” BSB BSB: and teaching them to obey all that I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”
