1 ARST After the plague ended, Yahweh said to Eleazar and Moses, BSB BSB: After the plague had ended, the LORD said to Moses and Eleazar son of Aaron the priest,
2 ARST “Count all the people of Israel again. Write down the names of all the men who are at least 20 years old who are able to fight in battles, along with their family names.” BSB BSB: “Take a census of the whole congregation of Israel by the houses of their fathers—all those twenty years of age or older who can serve in the army of Israel.”
3 ARST So while the Israelites were on the plains of Moab, by the Jordan across from Jericho, Eleazar and Moses told this to the Israelite leaders, BSB BSB: So on the plains of Moab by the Jordan, across from Jericho, Moses and Eleazar the priest issued the instruction,
4 ARST “Write down the names of all the Israelite men who are at least 20 years old, as Yahweh has commanded us.” So they did that, and this is a record of all the descendants of Jacob who came out of Egypt who were still alive. BSB BSB: “Take a census of the men twenty years of age or older, as the LORD has commanded Moses.” And these were the Israelites who came out of the land of Egypt:
5 ARST These are the families who descended from Reuben, Jacob’ s oldest son: the Hanokite family descended from his son Hanok; the Palluite family descended from his son Pallu; BSB BSB: Reuben was the firstborn of Israel. These were the descendants of Reuben: The Hanochite clan from Hanoch, the Palluite clan from Pallu,
6 ARST the Hezronite family descended from his son Hezron;{ and} the Karmite family descended from his son Karmi. BSB BSB: the Hezronite clan from Hezron, and the Carmite clan from Carmi.
7 ARST The Israelite leaders counted 43, 730 men from the families that descended from Reuben BSB BSB: These were the clans of Reuben, and their registration numbered 43,730.
8 ARST Pallu’ s son was Eliab BSB BSB: Now the son of Pallu was Eliab,
9 ARST and his grandsons were Nemuel, Dathan and Abiram. Dathan and Abiram were the leaders who joined with Korah to conspire against Aaron and Moses and rebelled against Yahweh. BSB BSB: and the sons of Eliab were Nemuel, Dathan, and Abiram. It was Dathan and Abiram, chosen by the congregation, who rebelled against Moses and Aaron with the followers of Korah who rebelled against the LORD.
10 ARST But the earth opened up and swallowed them and Korah. Yahweh also sent a fire that burned up 250 men who supported those three men. That was a warning to all the Israelite people that they should respect and obey the leaders whom Yahweh had appointed. BSB BSB: And the earth opened its mouth and swallowed them along with Korah, whose followers died when the fire consumed 250 men. They serve as a warning sign.
11 ARST But all of those who descended from Korah did not die on that day. BSB BSB: However, the line of Korah did not die out.
12 ARST These are the descendants of Simeon: the Nemuelite family descended from his son Nemuel; the Jaminite family descended from his son Jamin; the Jakinite family descended from his son Jakin; BSB BSB: These were the descendants of Simeon by their clans: The Nemuelite clan from Nemuel, the Jaminite clan from Jamin, the Jachinite clan from Jachin,
13 ARST the Zerahite family descended from his son Zerah;{ and} the Shaulite family descended from his son Shaul. BSB BSB: the Zerahite clan from Zerah, and the Shaulite clan from Shaul.
14 ARST The Israelite leaders counted 22, 000 men from the families that descended from Simeon. BSB BSB: These were the clans of Simeon, and there were 22,200 men.
15 ARST These are the families who descended from Gad: the Zephonite family descended from his son Zephon; the Haggite family descended from his son Haggo; the Shunite family descended from his son Shuni; BSB BSB: These were the descendants of Gad by their clans: The Zephonite clan from Zephon, the Haggite clan from Haggi, the Shunite clan from Shuni,

18 ARST The Israelite leaders counted 40, 500 men from the families that descended from Gad. BSB BSB: These were the clans of Gad, and their registration numbered 40,500.
19 ARST { As for those who descended from Judah,} his sons Er and Onan died in Canaan{ before they had any children}. BSB BSB: The sons of Judah were Er and Onan, but they died in the land of Canaan.
20 ARST These are the{ other} people who descended from Judah: the Shelanite family descended from his son Shelah; the Perezite family descended from his son Perez;{ and} the Zerahite family descended from his son Zerah. BSB BSB: These were the descendants of Judah by their clans: The Shelanite clan from Shelah, the Perezite clan from Perez, and the Zerahite clan from Zerah.
21 ARST These are the families who descended from Perez: the Hezronite family descended from his son Hezron and the Hamulite family descended from his son Hamul. BSB BSB: And these were the descendants of Perez: the Hezronite clan from Hezron and the Hamulite clan from Hamul.
22 ARST The Israelite leaders counted 76, 500 men from the families that descended from Judah. BSB BSB: These were the clans of Judah, and their registration numbered 76,500.
23 ARST These are the families who descended from Issachar: the Tolaite family descended from his son Tola; the Puite family descended from his son Puah; BSB BSB: These were the descendants of Issachar by their clans: The Tolaite clan from Tola, the Punite clan from Puvah,
24 ARST the Jashubite family descended from his son Jashub;{ and} the Shimronite family descended from his son Shimron. BSB BSB: the Jashubite clan from Jashub, and the Shimronite clan from Shimron.
25 ARST The Israelite leaders counted 64, 300 men from the families that descended from Issachar. BSB BSB: These were the clans of Issachar, and their registration numbered 64,300.
26 ARST These are the families who descended from Zebulun: the Seredite family descended from his son Sered; the Elonite family descended from his son Elon; and the Jahleelite family descended from his son Jahleel. BSB BSB: These were the descendants of Zebulun by their clans: The Seredite clan from Sered, the Elonite clan from Elon, and the Jahleelite clan from Jahleel.
27 ARST The Israelite leaders counted 60, 500 men from the families that descended from Zebulun. BSB BSB: These were the clans of Zebulun, and their registration numbered 60,500.
28 ARST These are those who descended from Joseph, his sons were Manasseh and Ephraim. BSB BSB: The descendants of Joseph included the clans of Manasseh and Ephraim.
29 ARST These are the families who descended from Manasseh: the Makirite family descended from his son Makir; and the Gileadite family descended from Makir’ s son Gilead. BSB BSB: These were the descendants of Manasseh: The Machirite clan from Machir, the father of Gilead, and the Gileadite clan from Gilead.

33 ARST Hepher’ s son Zelophehad only had daughters. Their names were Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milkah, and Tirzah. BSB BSB: Now Zelophehad son of Hepher had no sons but only daughters. The names of his daughters were Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah.
34 ARST The Israelite leaders counted 52, 700 men from the families that descended from Manasseh. BSB BSB: These were the clans of Manasseh, and their registration numbered 52,700.
35 ARST These are the families who descended from Ephraim: the Shuthelahite family descended from his son Shuthelah; the Bekerite family descended from his son Beker; and the Tahanite family descended from his son Tahan. BSB BSB: These were the descendants of Ephraim by their clans: The Shuthelahite clan from Shuthelah, the Becherite clan from Becher, and the Tahanite clan from Tahan.

37 ARST The Israelite leaders counted 32, 500 men from the families that descended from Ephraim. These were the families that descended from Joseph. BSB BSB: These were the clans of Ephraim, and their registration numbered 32,500. These clans were the descendants of Joseph.
38 ARST These are the families who descended from Benjamin: the Belaite family descended from his son Bela; the Ashbelite family descended from his son Ashbel; the Ahiramite family descended from his son Ahiram; BSB BSB: These were the descendants of Benjamin by their clans: The Belaite clan from Bela, the Ashbelite clan from Ashbel, the Ahiramite clan from Ahiram,

40 ARST Bela’ s sons were Ard and Naaman: the Ardite family descended from Ard and the Naamite family descended from Naaman. BSB BSB: And the descendants of Bela from Ard and Naaman were the Ardite clan from Ard and the Naamite clan from Naaman.
41 ARST The Israelite leaders counted 45, 600 men from the families that descended from Benjamin. BSB BSB: These were the clans of Benjamin, and their registration numbered 45,600.
42 ARST This is the family that descended from Dan: the Shuhamite family descended from his son Shuham. This is everyone who descended from Dan. BSB BSB: These were the descendants of Dan by their clans: The Shuhamite clan from Shuham. These were the clans of Dan.
43 ARST The Israelite leaders counted 64, 400 men from the families that descended from Shuham. BSB BSB: All of them were Shuhamite clans, and their registration numbered 64,400.
44 ARST These are the families that descended from Asher: the Imnite family descended from his son Imnah; the Ishvite family descnded from his son Ishvi;{ and} the Beriite family descended from his son Beriah. 46 ARST Asher’ s daughter was Serah. BSB BSB: And the name of Asher’s daughter was Serah.

48 ARST These are the families that descended from Naphtali: the Jahzeelite family descended from his son Jahzeel; the Gunite family descended from his son Guni; BSB BSB: These were the descendants of Naphtali by their clans: The Jahzeelite clan from Jahzeel, the Gunite clan from Guni,
49 ARST the Jezerite family descended from his son Jezer;{ and} the Shillemite family descended from his son Shillem. BSB BSB: the Jezerite clan from Jezer, and the Shillemite clan from Shillem.
51 ARST The total of the Israelite men whom the leaders counted was 601, 730. BSB BSB: These men of Israel numbered 601,730 in all.
52 ARST Then Yahweh said to Moses, BSB BSB: Then the LORD said to Moses,
53 ARST “Divide Canaan land among the tribes. Distribute the land according to the number of people in each tribe that are on your lists. BSB BSB: “The land is to be divided among the tribes as an inheritance, according to the number of names.
54 ARST Yahweh will give to each family an amount of land in proportion to how many people are in it. Families with many people will receive more land than families with less people. BSB BSB: Increase the inheritance for a large tribe and decrease it for a small one; each tribe is to receive its inheritance according to the number of those registered.
55 ARST Throw lots to determine which families receive each area of land. Families will inherit land according to which tribe they descended from. BSB BSB: Indeed, the land must be divided by lot; they shall receive their inheritance according to the names of the tribes of their fathers.
56 ARST The result of throwing lots will determine the area of land that each family receives. Allot the land between the families with many people and those with few people.” BSB BSB: Each inheritance is to be divided by lot among the larger and smaller tribes.”
57 ARST The leaders also counted the male descendants of Levi. They were in clans descended from Gershon, Kohath, and Merari. BSB BSB: Now these were the Levites numbered by their clans: The Gershonite clan from Gershon, the Kohathite clan from Kohath, and the Merarite clan from Merari.
58 ARST These also included people from the clans of Libni, Hebron, Mahli, Mushi, and Korah. All of them were descendants of Levi. Kohath was the ancestor of Amram, BSB BSB: These were the families of the Levites: The Libnite clan, the Hebronite clan, the Mahlite clan, the Mushite clan, and the Korahite clan. Now Kohath was the father of Amram,
59 ARST whose wife was Jochebed. She also was a descendant of Levi, but she was born in Egypt. She and Amram had two sons, Aaron and Moses, and their older sister Miriam. BSB BSB: and Amram’s wife was named Jochebed. She was also a daughter of Levi, born to Levi in Egypt. To Amram she bore Aaron, Moses, and their sister Miriam.
60 ARST Aaron’ s sons were Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar. BSB BSB: Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar were born to Aaron,
61 ARST But Nadab and Abihu died when they burned incense for a sacrifice to Yahweh in a way that disobeyed what Yahweh had commanded. BSB BSB: but Nadab and Abihu died when they offered unauthorized fire before the LORD.
62 ARST The leaders counted twenty- three thousand men from the descendants of Levi who were at least one month old. But these men were not counted when the rest of the Israelite people were counted, because were not given any land at that time. BSB BSB: The registration of the Levites totaled 23,000, every male a month old or more; they were not numbered among the other Israelites, because no inheritance was given to them among the Israelites.
63 ARST Those were the men whom Eleazar and Moses said should be counted. They counted the Israelite people on the plains of Moab, on the east side of the Jordan River, across from Jericho. BSB BSB: These were the ones numbered by Moses and Eleazar the priest when they counted the Israelites on the plains of Moab by the Jordan, across from Jericho.
64 ARST None of the men whom they counted were on the lists that were made by Aaron and Moses when the Israelites were in the wilderness of Sinai. BSB BSB: Among all these, however, there was not one who had been numbered by Moses and Aaron the priest when they counted the Israelites in the Wilderness of Sinai.
65 ARST They were told what Yahweh had said. He said,“They will all die in this desert,” and that is what happened. The only ones who were still alive were Jephunneh’ s son Caleb and Nun’ s son Joshua. BSB BSB: For the LORD had told them that they would surely die in the wilderness. Not one was left except Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun.
