1 ARST Here is the list of those who had descended from Aaron and Moses when Yahweh and Moses talked on Mount Sinai. BSB BSB: This is the account of Aaron and Moses at the time the LORD spoke with Moses on Mount Sinai.
2 ARST Aaron’ s oldest son was Nadab, and his other sons were Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar. BSB BSB: These are the names of the sons of Aaron: Nadab the firstborn, then Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar.
3 ARST These are the men whom Moses appointed and ordained to minister as priests. BSB BSB: These were Aaron’s sons, the anointed priests, who were ordained to serve as priests.
4 ARST However, Nadab and Abihu died in front of where Yahweh was present because they presented to him burning coals that he had not authorized.{ This happened while they were} in the desert wilderness around Sinai. Nadab and Abihu did not have any sons, so Eleazar and Ithamar ministered as priests with their father Aaron{ instead}. BSB BSB: Nadab and Abihu, however, died in the presence of the LORD when they offered unauthorized fire before the LORD in the Wilderness of Sinai. And since they had no sons, only Eleazar and Ithamar served as priests during the lifetime of their father Aaron.
5 ARST Yahweh told Moses, BSB BSB: Then the LORD said to Moses,
6 ARST “Summon the men who descended from Levi and order them to stand in front of Aaron the priest. They must help him. BSB BSB: “Bring the tribe of Levi and present them to Aaron the priest to assist him.
7 ARST They are responsible to help Aaron and work for the whole{ Israelite} community at the sacred tent by doing the work associated with the sacred tent. BSB BSB: They are to perform duties for him and for the whole congregation before the Tent of Meeting, attending to the service of the tabernacle.
8 ARST They must also take care of all the things in the sacred tent and work for the Israelites by doing the work associated with the sacred tent. BSB BSB: They shall take care of all the furnishings of the Tent of Meeting and fulfill obligations for the Israelites by attending to the service of the tabernacle.
9 ARST Moses, assign those who descended from Levi to serve Aaron and those who descend from him. Out of all the Israelites, I have assigned exclusively those who descended from Levi to serve Aaron{ and his family}. BSB BSB: Assign the Levites to Aaron and his sons; they have been given exclusively to him from among the Israelites.
10 ARST Assign Aaron and those who descend from him to do the priestly work. If anyone who is not a Levite approaches the sacred tent, the Levites must execute that person.” BSB BSB: So you shall appoint Aaron and his sons to carry out the duties of the priesthood; but any outsider who approaches the tabernacle must be put to death.”
11 ARST Yahweh also told Moses, BSB BSB: Again the LORD spoke to Moses, saying,
12 ARST “Note that I indeed have appointed those who descend from Levi out of all the Israelites{ to serve me} instead of{ appointing} the oldest{ male} from every Israelite family. So those who descend from Levi are mine BSB BSB: “Behold, I have taken the Levites from among the children of Israel in place of every firstborn Israelite from the womb. The Levites belong to Me,
13 ARST because every firstborn{ male} is mine. I consecrated the oldest male of every Israelite family and the oldest male offspring of all their farm animals when I killed every oldest{ male} in Egypt. They are mine. I am Yahweh.” BSB BSB: for all the firstborn are Mine. On the day I struck down every firstborn in the land of Egypt, I consecrated to Myself all the firstborn in Israel, both man and beast. They are Mine; I am the LORD.”
14 ARST Yahweh told Moses in the desert wilderness around Sinai, BSB BSB: Then the LORD spoke to Moses in the Wilderness of Sinai, saying,
15 ARST “Count all the males who descended from Levi and are at least one month old.{ Count them} by their ancestral families and tribal groups.” BSB BSB: “Number the Levites by their families and clans. You are to count every male a month old or more.”
16 ARST So Moses counted all the males who descended from Levi.{ He did} exactly what Yahweh ordered him{ to do}. BSB BSB: So Moses numbered them according to the word of the LORD, as he had been commanded.
17 ARST The names of Levi’ s sons were Gershon, Kohath, and Merari. BSB BSB: These were the sons of Levi by name: Gershon, Kohath, and Merari.
18 ARST The names of Gershon’ s sons by their tribal groups were Libni and Shimei. BSB BSB: These were the names of the sons of Gershon by their clans: Libni and Shimei.
19 ARST The{ names} of Kohath’ s sons by their tribal groups were Amram, Izhar, Hebron, and Uzziel. BSB BSB: The sons of Kohath by their clans were Amram, Izhar, Hebron, and Uzziel.
20 ARST And the{ names} of Merari’ s sons by their tribal groups were Mahli and Mushi. These were the{ three} tribal groups of those who descended from Levi by their ancestral families. BSB BSB: And the sons of Merari by their clans were Mahli and Mushi. These were the clans of the Levites, according to their families.
21 ARST The tribal groups that descended from Libni and Shimei were those that descended from Gershon. These were the{ two} tribal groups that descended from Gershon. BSB BSB: From Gershon came the Libnite clan and the Shimeite clan; these were the Gershonite clans.
22 ARST Moses counted 7, 500 males in total who were at least one month old{ and had descended from Gershon}. BSB BSB: The number of all the males a month old or more was 7,500.
23 ARST The{ two} tribal groups that descended from Gershon set up their tents near the back of the sacred tent on its western{ side}. BSB BSB: The Gershonite clans were to camp on the west, behind the tabernacle,
24 ARST Lael’ s son Eliasaph led the{ two} tribal groups that descended from Gershon. BSB BSB: and the leader of the families of the Gershonites was Eliasaph son of Lael.
25 ARST At the sacred tent, those who descended from Gershon were responsible to take care of the sacred tent, including the tent{ itself}, what covered it, the curtains at its entrance, BSB BSB: The duties of the Gershonites at the Tent of Meeting were the tabernacle and tent, its covering, the curtain for the entrance to the Tent of Meeting,
26 ARST the curtains that hang on{ the fence around} the courtyard, the curtains at the entrance of the courtyard that surrounds the sacred tent and the altar, and all the braided cords that they used with these items. BSB BSB: the curtains of the courtyard, the curtain for the entrance to the courtyard that surrounds the tabernacle and altar, and the cords—all the service for these items.
27 ARST The tribal groups that descended from Amram, Izhar, Hebron, and Uzziel were those that descended from Kohath. These were the{ four} tribal groups that descended from Kohath. BSB BSB: From Kohath came the clans of the Amramites, the Izharites, the Hebronites, and the Uzzielites; these were the clans of the Kohathites.
28 ARST 8, 600 males in total were at least one month old{ and had descended from Kohath}.{ They} were responsible for taking care of the Holy Place. BSB BSB: The number of all the males a month old or more was 8,600. They were responsible for the duties of the sanctuary.
29 ARST The{ four} tribal groups that descended from Kohath’ s sons set up their tents on the southern side of the sacred tent. BSB BSB: The clans of the Kohathites were to camp on the south side of the tabernacle,
30 ARST Uzziel’ s son Elizaphan led the{ four} tribal groups that descended from Kohath. BSB BSB: and the leader of the families of the Kohathites was Elizaphan son of Uzziel.
31 ARST Those{ who descended from Kohath} were responsible to take care of the sacred chest, the table, the lampstands, the altar, the items in the Holy Place that they needed to minister, the curtain{ that covered the entrance of the Holy Place}, and everything that they used with these items. BSB BSB: Their duties were the ark, the table, the lampstand, the altars, the articles of the sanctuary used with them, and the curtain—all the service for these items.
32 ARST Aaron the priest’ s son Eleazar led those who led those who descended from Levi. He was in charge of those who were responsible for taking care of the Holy Place. BSB BSB: The chief of the leaders of the Levites was Eleazar son of Aaron the priest; he oversaw those responsible for the duties of the sanctuary.
33 ARST The tribal groups that descended from Mahli and Mushi were those that descended from Merari. These were the{ two} tribal groups that descended from Merari. BSB BSB: From Merari came the clans of the Mahlites and Mushites; these were the Merarite clans.
34 ARST Moses counted 6, 200 males in total who were at least one month old{ and had descended from Merari}. BSB BSB: The number of all the males a month old or more was 6,200.
35 ARST Abihail’ s son Zuriel led the{ two} tribal groups that descended from Merari. The{ two} tribal groups set up their tents on the northern side of the sacred tent. BSB BSB: The leader of the families of the Merarites was Zuriel son of Abihail; they were to camp on the north side of the tabernacle.
36 ARST Those who descended from Merari were in charge of taking care of the sacred tent’ s wooden frame boards, poles, posts,{ silver} bases, all its items, and everything that they used with these items. BSB BSB: The duties assigned to the sons of Merari were the tabernacle’s frames, crossbars, posts, bases, and all its equipment—all the service for these items,
37 ARST { They were} also{ in charge of taking care of} the posts, bases,{ bronze} pins, and braided cords{ that were parts of the fence} surrounding the courtyard. BSB BSB: as well as the posts of the surrounding courtyard with their bases, tent pegs, and ropes.
38 ARST Moses, Aaron, and those who descended from him set up their tents at the sacred tent on its eastern side, close to the sacred tent.{ They} were responsible for taking care of the Holy Place.{ In this way,} they worked for the Israelites. If anyone who was not a Levite approached the sacred tent, the Levites were to execute that person. BSB BSB: Moses, Aaron, and Aaron’s sons were to camp to the east of the tabernacle, toward the sunrise, before the Tent of Meeting. They were to perform the duties of the sanctuary as a service on behalf of the Israelites; but any outsider who approached the sanctuary was to be put to death.
39 ARST Moses and Aaron counted 22, 000 males in total who were at least one month old and had descended from Levi.{ Moses and Aaron counted them} by their tribal groups as Yahweh had ordered them{ to do}. BSB BSB: The total number of Levites that Moses and Aaron counted by their clans at the LORD’s command, including all the males a month old or more, was 22,000.
40 ARST Yahweh told Moses,“Count all the oldest males who are at least one month old in every Israelite family. List them by name. BSB BSB: Then the LORD said to Moses, “Number every firstborn male of the Israelites a month old or more, and list their names.
41 ARST I am Yahweh. Reserve those who descended from Levi to{ serve} me in place of the oldest males of every Israelite family.{ Reserve for me} also the farm animals of those who descended from Levi in place of every Israelite farm animal’ s oldest{ offspring}.” BSB BSB: You are to take the Levites for Me—I am the LORD—in place of all the firstborn of Israel, and the livestock of the Levites in place of all the firstborn of the livestock of the Israelites.”
42 ARST So Moses counted the oldest{ males} in every Israelite family.{ He did} what Yahweh had ordered him{ to do}. BSB BSB: So Moses numbered all the firstborn of the Israelites, as the LORD had commanded him.
43 ARST Moses counted by name all 22, 273 of the oldest males who are at least one month old in every Israelite family. BSB BSB: The total number of the firstborn males a month old or more, listed by name, was 22,273.
44 ARST Yahweh told Moses, BSB BSB: Again the LORD spoke to Moses, saying,
45 ARST “Reserve those who descended from Levi in place of the oldest males of every Israelite family.{ Reserve for me} also the farm animals of those who descended from Levi in place of every Israelite farm animal’ s{ oldest offspring}. I am Yahweh. Those who descended from Levi are mine. BSB BSB: “Take the Levites in place of all the firstborn of Israel, and the livestock of the Levites in place of their livestock. The Levites belong to Me; I am the LORD.
46 ARST As for the money the Israelites must pay because there are 273 more firstborn Israelite males than there are males who descended from Levi, BSB BSB: To redeem the 273 firstborn Israelites who outnumber the Levites,
47 ARST collect exactly five pieces{ of silver} for each{ of the 273 additional firstborn males}.(Use the official standard for the weight of silver that priests stored in the sacred tent, which is about 11 grams.) BSB BSB: you are to collect five shekels for each one, according to the sanctuary shekel of twenty gerahs.
48 ARST Give those{ pieces of} silver to Aaron and his sons. Those{ pieces} will pay for the 273 firstborn Israelite males who were more than{ the males of those who descended from Levi}.” BSB BSB: Give the money to Aaron and his sons as the redemption price for the excess among the Israelites.”
49 ARST Moses collected the{ pieces of} silver as payment from the{ 273 firstborn Israelite males} who were in addition to those for whom the Levites substituted. BSB BSB: So Moses collected the redemption money from those in excess of the number redeemed by the Levites.
50 ARST Moses collected from the oldest males of every Israelite family a total of 1, 365{ pieces of} silver according to the official standard for the weight of silver that priests stored in the sacred tent. BSB BSB: He collected the money from the firstborn of the Israelites: 1,365 shekels, according to the sanctuary shekel.
51 ARST Then Moses gave those{ 1, 365 pieces of} silver as payment to Aaron and his sons.{ He did} exactly what Yahweh ordered him{ to do}. BSB BSB: And Moses gave the redemption money to Aaron and his sons in obedience to the word of the LORD, just as the LORD had commanded him.
