1. The Serpent’s Deception

   (Romans 5:12–21)

2. 1BBENow the snake was wiser than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made. And he said to the woman, Has God truly said that you may not take of the fruit of any tree in the garden?BSBBSB: Now the serpent was more crafty than any beast of the field that the LORD God had made. And he said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden?’”
3. 2BBEAnd the woman said, We may take of the fruit of the trees in the garden:BSBBSB: The woman answered the serpent, “We may eat the fruit of the trees of the garden,
4. 3BBEBut of the fruit of the tree in the middle of the garden, God has said, If you take of it or put your hands on it, death will come to you.BSBBSB: but about the fruit of the tree in the middle of the garden, God has said, ‘You must not eat of it or touch it, or you will die.’”
5. 4BBEAnd the snake said, Death will not certainly come to you:BSBBSB: “You will not surely die,” the serpent told the woman.
6. 5BBEFor God sees that on the day when you take of its fruit, your eyes will be open, and you will be as gods, having knowledge of good and evil.BSBBSB: “For God knows that in the day you eat of it, your eyes will be opened and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”
7. 6BBEAnd when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and a delight to the eyes, and to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit, and gave it to her husband.BSBBSB: When the woman saw that the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eyes, and that it was desirable for obtaining wisdom, she took the fruit and ate it. She also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate it.
8. 7BBEAnd their eyes were open and they were conscious that they had no clothing and they made themselves coats of leaves stitched together.BSBBSB: And the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew that they were naked; so they sewed together fig leaves and made coverings for themselves.

9. God Arraigns Adam and Eve

10. 8BBEAnd there came to them the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the evening wind: and the man and his wife went to a secret place among the trees of the garden, away from the eyes of the Lord God.BSBBSB: Then the man and his wife heard the voice of the LORD God walking in the garden in the breeze of the day, and they hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God among the trees of the garden.
11. 9BBEAnd the voice of the Lord God came to the man, saying, Where are you?BSBBSB: But the LORD God called out to the man, “Where are you?”
12. 10BBEAnd he said, Hearing your voice in the garden I was full of fear, because I was without clothing: and I kept myself from your eyes.BSBBSB: “I heard Your voice in the garden,” he replied, “and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid myself.”
13. 11BBEAnd he said, Who gave you the knowledge that you were without clothing? Have you taken of the fruit of the tree which I said you were not to take?BSBBSB: “Who told you that you were naked?” asked the LORD God. “Have you eaten from the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?”
14. 12BBEAnd the man said, The woman whom you gave to be with me, she gave me the fruit of the tree and I took it.BSBBSB: And the man answered, “The woman whom You gave me, she gave me fruit from the tree, and I ate it.”
15. 13BBEAnd the Lord God said to the woman, What have you done? And the woman said, I was tricked by the deceit of the snake and I took it.BSBBSB: Then the LORD God said to the woman, “What is this you have done?” “The serpent deceived me,” she replied, “and I ate.”

16. The Fate of the Serpent

17. 14BBEAnd the Lord God said to the snake, Because you have done this you are cursed more than all cattle and every beast of the field; you will go flat on the earth, and dust will be your food all the days of your life:BSBBSB: So the LORD God said to the serpent: “Because you have done this, cursed are you above all livestock and every beast of the field! On your belly will you go, and dust you will eat, all the days of your life.
18. 15BBEAnd there will be war between you and the woman and between your seed and her seed: by him will your head be crushed and by you his foot will be wounded.BSBBSB: And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her seed. He will crush your head, and you will strike his heel.”

19. The Punishment of Mankind

20. 16BBETo the woman he said, Great will be your pain in childbirth; in sorrow will your children come to birth; still your desire will be for your husband, but he will be your master.BSBBSB: To the woman He said: “I will sharply increase your pain in childbirth; in pain you will bring forth children. Your desire will be for your husband, and he will rule over you.”
21. 17BBEAnd to Adam he said, Because you gave ear to the voice of your wife and took of the fruit of the tree which I said you were not to take, the earth is cursed on your account; in pain you will get your food from it all your life.BSBBSB: And to Adam He said: “Because you have listened to the voice of your wife and have eaten from the tree of which I commanded you not to eat, cursed is the ground because of you; through toil you will eat of it all the days of your life.
22. 18BBEThorns and waste plants will come up, and the plants of the field will be your food;BSBBSB: Both thorns and thistles it will yield for you, and you will eat the plants of the field.
23. 19BBEWith the hard work of your hands you will get your bread till you go back to the earth from which you were taken: for dust you are and to the dust you will go back.BSBBSB: By the sweat of your brow you will eat your bread, until you return to the ground—because out of it were you taken. For dust you are, and to dust you shall return.”
24. 20BBEAnd the man gave his wife the name of Eve because she was the mother of all who have life.BSBBSB: And Adam named his wife Eve, because she would be the mother of all the living.

25. The Expulsion from Paradise

26. 21BBEAnd the Lord God made for Adam and for his wife coats of skins for their clothing.BSBBSB: And the LORD God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife, and He clothed them.
27. 22BBEAnd the Lord God said, Now the man has become like one of us, having knowledge of good and evil; and now if he puts out his hand and takes of the fruit of the tree of life, he will go on living for ever.BSBBSB: Then the LORD God said, “Behold, the man has become like one of Us, knowing good and evil. And now, lest he reach out his hand and take also from the tree of life, and eat, and live forever...”
28. 23BBESo the Lord God sent him out of the garden of Eden to be a worker on the earth from which he was taken.BSBBSB: Therefore the LORD God banished him from the Garden of Eden to work the ground from which he had been taken.
29. 24BBESo he sent the man out; and at the east of the garden of Eden he put winged ones and a flaming sword turning every way to keep the way to the tree of life.BSBBSB: So He drove out the man and stationed cherubim on the east side of the Garden of Eden, along with a whirling sword of flame to guard the way to the tree of life.
