1. Rahab Welcomes the Spies

   (Hebrews 11:30–31)

2. 1BBEThen Joshua, the son of Nun, sent two men from Shittim secretly, with the purpose of searching out the land, and Jericho. So they went and came to the house of a loose woman of the town, named Rahab, where they took their rest for the night.BSBBSB: Then Joshua son of Nun secretly sent two spies from Shittim, saying, “Go, inspect the land, especially Jericho.” So they went and entered the house of a prostitute named Rahab and stayed there.
3. 2BBEAnd it was said to the king of Jericho, See, some men have come here tonight from the children of Israel with the purpose of searching out the land.BSBBSB: And it was reported to the king of Jericho: “Behold, some men of Israel have come here tonight to spy out the land.”
4. 3BBEThen the king of Jericho sent to Rahab, saying, Send out the men who have come to you and are in your house; for they have come with the purpose of searching out all the land.BSBBSB: So the king of Jericho sent to Rahab and said, “Bring out the men who came to you and entered your house, for they have come to spy out the whole land.”
5. 4BBEAnd the woman took the two men and put them in a secret place; then she said, Yes, the men came to me, but I had no idea where they came from;BSBBSB: But the woman had taken the two men and hidden them. So she said, “Yes, the men did come to me, but I did not know where they had come from.
6. 5BBEAnd when it was the time for shutting the doors at dark, they went out; I have no idea where the men went: but if you go after them quickly, you will overtake them.BSBBSB: At dusk, when the gate was about to close, the men went out, and I do not know which way they went. Pursue them quickly, and you may catch them!”
7. 6BBEBut she had taken them up to the roof, covering them with the stems of flax which she had put out in order there.BSBBSB: (But Rahab had taken them up to the roof and hidden them among the stalks of flax that she had laid out there.)
8. 7BBESo the men went after them on the road to Jordan as far as the river-crossing: and when they had gone out after them, the door into the town was shut.BSBBSB: So the king’s men set out in pursuit of the spies along the road to the fords of the Jordan, and as soon as they had gone out, the gate was shut.

9. The Promise to Rahab

10. 8BBEAnd before the men went to rest, she came up to them on the roof,BSBBSB: Before the spies lay down for the night, Rahab went up on the roof
11. 9BBEAnd said to them, It is clear to me that the Lord has given you the land, and that the fear of you has come on us;BSBBSB: and said to them, “I know that the LORD has given you this land and that the fear of you has fallen on us, so that all who dwell in the land are melting in fear of you.
12. 10BBEFor we have had news of how the Lord made the Red Sea dry before you when you came out of Egypt; and what you did to the two kings of the Amorites, on the other side of Jordan, to Sihon and Og, whom you gave up to the curse.BSBBSB: For we have heard how the LORD dried up the waters of the Red Sea before you when you came out of Egypt, and what you did to Sihon and Og, the two kings of the Amorites across the Jordan, whom you devoted to destruction.
13. 11BBEAnd because of this news, our hearts became like water, and there was no more spirit in any of us because of you; for the Lord your God is God in heaven on high and here on earth.BSBBSB: When we heard this, our hearts melted and everyone’s courage failed because of you, for the LORD your God is God in the heavens above and on the earth below.
14. 12BBESo now, will you give me your oath by the Lord, that, because I have been kind to you, you will be kind to my father's house,BSBBSB: Now therefore, please swear to me by the LORD that you will indeed show kindness to my family, because I showed kindness to you. Give me a sure sign
15. 13BBEAnd that you will keep safe my father and mother and my brothers and sisters and all they have, so that death may not come on us?BSBBSB: that you will spare the lives of my father and mother, my brothers and sisters, and all who belong to them, and that you will deliver us from death.”
16. 14BBEAnd the men said to her, Our life for yours if you keep our business secret; and when the Lord has given us the land, we will keep faith and be kind to you.BSBBSB: “Our lives for your lives!” the men agreed. “If you do not report our mission, we will show you kindness and faithfulness when the LORD gives us the land.”
17. 15BBEThen she let them down from the window by a cord, for the house where she was living was on the town wall.BSBBSB: Then Rahab let them down by a rope through the window, since the house where she lived was built into the wall of the city.
18. 16BBEAnd she said to them, Get away into the hill-country, or the men who have gone after you will overtake you; keep yourselves safe there for three days, till the searchers have come back, and then go on your way.BSBBSB: “Go to the hill country,” she said, “so that your pursuers will not find you. Hide yourselves there for three days until they have returned; then go on your way.”
19. 17BBEAnd the men said to her, We will only be responsible for this oath which you have made us take,BSBBSB: The men said to her, “We will not be bound by this oath you made us swear
20. 18BBEIf, when we come into the land, you put this cord of bright red thread in the window from which you let us down; and get your father and mother and your brothers and all your family into the house;BSBBSB: unless, when we enter the land, you have tied this scarlet cord in the window through which you let us down, and unless you have brought your father and mother and brothers and all your family into your house.
21. 19BBEThen if anyone goes out of your house into the street, his blood will be on his head, we will not be responsible; but if any damage comes to anyone in the house, his blood will be on our heads.BSBBSB: If anyone goes out the door of your house into the street, his blood will be on his own head, and we will be innocent. But if a hand is laid on anyone with you in the house, his blood will be on our heads.
22. 20BBEBut if you say anything about our business here, then we will be free from the oath you have made us take.BSBBSB: And if you report our mission, we will be released from the oath you made us swear.”
23. 21BBEAnd she said, Let it be as you say. Then she sent them away, and they went; and she put the bright red cord in the window.BSBBSB: “Let it be as you say,” she replied, and she sent them away. And when they had gone, she tied the scarlet cord in the window.
24. 22BBEAnd they went into the hill-country and were there three days, till the men who had gone after them had come back; and those who went after them were searching for them everywhere without coming across them.BSBBSB: So the spies went out into the hill country and stayed there three days, until their pursuers had returned without finding them, having searched all along the road.
25. 23BBEThen the two men came down from the hill-country and went over and came back to Joshua, the son of Nun; and they gave him a complete account of what had taken place.BSBBSB: Then the two men started back, came down from the hill country, and crossed the river. So they came to Joshua son of Nun and reported all that had happened to them.
26. 24BBEAnd they said to Joshua, Truly, the Lord has given all the land into our hands; and all the people of the land have become like water because of us.BSBBSB: “The LORD has surely delivered the entire land into our hands,” they said to Joshua. “Indeed, all who dwell in the land are melting in fear of us.”
