Judgment on Moab, Judah, and Israel 1 Brenton Thus saith the Lord; For three sins of Moab, and for four, I will not turn away from it; because they burnt the bones of the king of Idumea to lime. BSB BSB: This is what the LORD says: “For three transgressions of Moab, even four, I will not revoke My judgment, because he burned to lime the bones of Edom’s king.
Brenton But I will send forth a fire on Moab, and it shall devour the foundations of its cities: and Moab shall perish in weakness, with a shout, and with the sound of a trumpet. BSB BSB: So I will send fire against Moab to consume the citadels of Kerioth. Moab will die in tumult, amid war cries and the sound of the ram’s horn.
Brenton And I will destroy the judge out of her, and slay all her princes with him, saith the Lord. BSB BSB: I will cut off the ruler of Moab and kill all the officials with him,” says the LORD.
Brenton Thus saith the Lord; For three sins of the children of Juda, and for four, I will not turn away from him; because they have rejected the law of the Lord, and have not kept his ordinances, and their vain idols which they made, which their fathers followed, caused them to err. BSB BSB: This is what the LORD says: “For three transgressions of Judah, even four, I will not revoke My judgment, because they reject the Law of the LORD and fail to keep His statutes; they are led astray by the lies in which their fathers walked.
Brenton And I will send a fire on Juda, and it shall devour the foundations of Jerusalem. BSB BSB: So I will send fire upon Judah to consume the citadels of Jerusalem.”
Brenton Thus saith the Lord; For three sins of Israel, and for four, I will not turn away from him; because they sold the righteous for silver, and the poor for sandals, BSB BSB: This is what the LORD says: “For three transgressions of Israel, even four, I will not revoke My judgment, because they sell the righteous for silver and the needy for a pair of sandals.
Brenton wherewith to tread on the dust of the earth, and they have smitten upon the heads of the poor, and have perverted the way of the lowly: and a son and his father have gone in to the same maid, that they might profane the name of their God. BSB BSB: They trample on the heads of the poor as on the dust of the earth; they push the needy out of their way. A man and his father have relations with the same girl and so profane My holy name.
Brenton Nevertheless I cut off the Amorite from before them, whose height was as the height of a cedar, and he was strong as an oak; and I dried up his fruit from above, and his roots from beneath. BSB BSB: Yet it was I who destroyed the Amorite before them, though his height was like that of the cedars, and he was as strong as the oaks. Yet I destroyed his fruit above and his roots below.
Brenton And I brought you up out of the land of Egypt, and led you about in the desert forty years, that ye should inherit the land of the Amorites. BSB BSB: And I brought you up from the land of Egypt and led you forty years in the wilderness, that you might take possession of the land of the Amorite.
Brenton And I took of your sons for prophets, and of your young men for consecration. Are not these things so, ye sons of Israel? saith the Lord. BSB BSB: I raised up prophets from your sons and Nazirites from your young men. Is this not true, O children of Israel?” declares the LORD.
Brenton But ye gave the consecrated ones wine to drink; and ye commanded the prophets, saying, Prophesy not. BSB BSB: “But you made the Nazirites drink wine and commanded the prophets not to prophesy.
Brenton Therefore, behold, I roll under you, as a waggon full of straw is rolled. BSB BSB: Behold, I am about to crush you in your place as with a cart full of grain.
Brenton And flight shall perish from the runner, and the strong shall not hold fast his strength, and the warrior shall not save his life: BSB BSB: Escape will fail the swift, the strong will not prevail by his strength, and the mighty will not save his life.
Brenton and the archer shall not withstand, and he that is swift of foot shall in no wise escape; and the horseman shall not save his life. BSB BSB: The archer will not stand his ground, the fleet of foot will not escape, and the horseman will not save his life.
Brenton And the strong shall find no confidence in power: the naked shall flee away in that day, saith the Lord. BSB BSB: Even the bravest of mighty men will flee naked on that day,” declares the LORD.
