Lot Welcomes the Angels (Judges 19:1–30)
Brenton And the two angels came to Sodom at evening. And Lot sat by the gate of Sodom, and Lot having seen them, rose up to meet them, and he worshipped with his face to the ground, and said, BSB BSB: Now the two angels arrived at Sodom in the evening, and Lot was sitting in the gateway of the city. When Lot saw them, he got up to meet them, bowed facedown,
Brenton Lo! my lords, turn aside to the house of your servant, and rest from your journey, and wash your feet, and having risen early in the morning ye shall depart on your journey. And they said, Nay, but we will lodge in the street. BSB BSB: and said, “My lords, please turn aside into the house of your servant; wash your feet and spend the night. Then you can rise early and go on your way.” “No,” they answered, “we will spend the night in the square.”
Brenton And he constrained them, and they turned aside to him, and they entered into his house, and he made a feast for them, and baked unleavened cakes for them, and they did eat. BSB BSB: But Lot insisted so strongly that they followed him into his house. He prepared a feast for them and baked unleavened bread, and they ate.
Brenton But before they went to sleep, the men of the city, the Sodomites, compassed the house, both young and old, all the people together. BSB BSB: Before they had gone to bed, all the men of the city of Sodom, both young and old, surrounded the house.
Brenton And they called out Lot, and said to him, Where are the men that went in to thee this night? bring them out to us that we may be with them. BSB BSB: They called out to Lot, saying, “Where are the men who came to you tonight? Send them out to us so we can have relations with them!”
Brenton And Lot went out to them to the porch, and he shut the door after him, BSB BSB: Lot went outside to meet them, shutting the door behind him.
Brenton and said to them, By no means, brethren, do not act villanously. BSB BSB: “Please, my brothers,” he pleaded, “don’t do such a wicked thing!
Brenton And they said to him, Stand back there, thou camest in to sojourn, was it also to judge? Now then we would harm thee more than them. And they pressed hard on the man, even Lot, and they drew nigh to break the door. BSB BSB: “Get out of the way!” they replied. And they declared, “This one came here as a foreigner, and he is already acting like a judge! Now we will treat you worse than them.” And they pressed in on Lot and moved in to break down the door.
Brenton And the men stretched forth their hands and drew Lot in to them into the house, and shut the door of the house. BSB BSB: But the men inside reached out, pulled Lot into the house with them, and shut the door.
Brenton And they smote the men that were at the door of the house with blindness, both small and great, and they were wearied with seeking the door. BSB BSB: And they struck the men at the entrance, young and old, with blindness, so that they wearied themselves trying to find the door.
Lot Flees to Zoar 12 Brenton And the men said to Lot, Hast thou here sons-in-law, or sons or daughters, or if thou hast any other friend in the city, bring them out of this place. BSB BSB: Then the two men said to Lot, “Do you have anyone else here—a son-in-law, your sons or daughters, or anyone else in the city who belongs to you? Get them out of here,
Brenton For we are going to destroy this place; for their cry has been raised up before the Lord, and the Lord has sent us to destroy it. BSB BSB: because we are about to destroy this place. For the outcry to the LORD against its people is so great that He has sent us to destroy it.”
Brenton And Lot went out, and spoke to his sons-in-law who had married his daughters, and said, Rise up, and depart out of this place, for the Lord is about to destroy the city; but he seemed to be speaking absurdly before his sons-in-law. BSB BSB: So Lot went out and spoke to the sons-in-law who were pledged in marriage to his daughters. “Get up,” he said. “Get out of this place, for the LORD is about to destroy the city!” But his sons-in-law thought he was joking.
Brenton But when it was morning, the angels hastened Lot, saying, Arise and take thy wife, and thy two daughters whom thou hast, and go forth; lest thou also be destroyed with the iniquities of the city. BSB BSB: At daybreak the angels hurried Lot along, saying, “Get up! Take your wife and your two daughters who are here, or you will be swept away in the punishment of the city.”
Brenton And it came to pass when they brought them out, that they said, Save thine own life by all means; look not round to that which is behind, nor stay in all the country round about, escape to the mountain, lest perhaps thou be overtaken together with them. BSB BSB: As soon as the men had brought them out, one of them said, “Run for your lives! Do not look back, and do not stop anywhere on the plain! Flee to the mountains, or you will be swept away!”
Brenton And Lot said to them, I pray, Lord, BSB BSB: But Lot replied, “No, my lords, please!
Brenton since thy servant has found mercy before thee, and thou hast magnified thy righteousness, in what thou doest towards me that my soul may live,—but I shall not be able to escape to the mountain, lest perhaps the calamity overtake me and I die. BSB BSB: Your servant has indeed found favor in your sight, and you have shown me great kindness by sparing my life. But I cannot run to the mountains; the disaster will overtake me, and I will die.
Brenton Behold this city is near for me to escape thither, which is a small one, and there shall I be preserved, is it not little? and my soul shall live because of thee. BSB BSB: Look, there is a town nearby where I can flee, and it is a small place. Please let me flee there—is it not a small place? Then my life will be saved.”
Brenton And he said to him, Behold, I have had respect to thee also about this thing, that I should not overthrow the city about which thou hast spoken. BSB BSB: “Very well,” he answered, “I will grant this request as well, and will not demolish the town you indicate.
Brenton Hasten therefore to escape thither, for I shall not be able to do anything until thou art come thither; therefore he called the name of that city, Segor. BSB BSB: Hurry! Run there quickly, for I cannot do anything until you reach it.” That is why the town was called Zoar.
Brenton The sun was risen upon the earth, when Lot entered into Segor. BSB BSB: And by the time the sun had risen over the land, Lot had reached Zoar.
The Destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah (Luke 17:20–37)
Brenton And he overthrew these cities, and all the country round about, and all that dwelt in the cities, and the plants springing out of the ground. BSB BSB: Thus He destroyed these cities and the entire plain, including all the inhabitants of the cities and everything that grew on the ground.
Brenton And his wife looked back, and she became a pillar of salt. BSB BSB: But Lot’s wife looked back, and she became a pillar of salt.
Brenton And Abraam rose up early to go to the place, where he had stood before the Lord. BSB BSB: Early the next morning, Abraham got up and returned to the place where he had stood before the LORD.
Brenton And he looked towards Sodom and Gomorrha, and towards the surrounding country, and saw, and behold a flame went up from the earth, as the smoke of a furnace. BSB BSB: He looked down toward Sodom and Gomorrah and all the land of the plain, and he saw the smoke rising from the land like smoke from a furnace.
Brenton And it came to pass that when God destroyed all the cities of the region round about, God remembered Abraam, and sent Lot out of the midst of the overthrow, when the Lord overthrew those cities in which Lot dwelt. BSB BSB: So when God destroyed the cities of the plain, He remembered Abraham, and He brought Lot out of the catastrophe that destroyed the cities where he had lived.
Lot and His Daughters 32 Brenton Come and let us make our father drink wine, and let us sleep with him, and let us raise up seed from our father. BSB BSB: Come, let us get our father drunk with wine so we can sleep with him and preserve his line.”
Brenton So they made their father drink wine in that night, and the elder went in and lay with her father that night, and he knew not when he slept and when he rose up. BSB BSB: So that night they got their father drunk with wine, and the firstborn went in and slept with her father; he was not aware when she lay down or when she got up.
Brenton And it came to pass on the morrow, that the elder said to the younger, Behold, I slept yesternight with our father, let us make him drink wine in this night also, and do thou go in and sleep with him, and let us raise up seed of our father. BSB BSB: The next day the older daughter said to the younger, “Look, I slept with my father last night. Let us get him drunk with wine again tonight so you can go in and sleep with him and we can preserve our father’s line.”
Brenton So they made their father drink wine in that night also, and the younger went in and slept with her father, and he knew not when he slept, nor when he arose. BSB BSB: So again that night they got their father drunk with wine, and the younger daughter went in and slept with him; he was not aware when she lay down or when she got up.
Brenton And the two daughters of Lot conceived by their father. BSB BSB: Thus both of Lot’s daughters became pregnant by their father.
Brenton And the elder bore a son, and called his name Moab, saying, He is of my father. This is the father of the Moabites to this present day. BSB BSB: The older daughter gave birth to a son and named him Moab. He is the father of the Moabites of today.
Brenton And the younger also bore a son, and called his name Amman, saying, The son of my family. This is the father of the Ammanites to this present day. BSB BSB: The younger daughter also gave birth to a son, and she named him Ben-ammi. He is the father of the Ammonites of today.
