The Seventh Day (Exodus 16:22–30; Hebrews 4:1–11)
Brenton And the heavens and the earth were finished, and the whole world of them. BSB BSB: Thus the heavens and the earth were completed in all their vast array.
Brenton And God finished on the sixth day his works which he made, and he ceased on the seventh day from all his works which he made. BSB BSB: And by the seventh day God had finished the work He had been doing; so on that day He rested from all His work.
Brenton And God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, because in it he ceased from all his works which God began to do. BSB BSB: Then God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, because on that day He rested from all the work of creation that He had accomplished.
Man and Woman in the Garden 5 Brenton and every herb of the field before it was on the earth, and all the grass of the field before it sprang up, for God had not rained on the earth, and there was not a man to cultivate it. BSB BSB: Now no shrub of the field had yet appeared on the earth, nor had any plant of the field sprouted, for the LORD God had not yet sent rain upon the earth, and there was no man to cultivate the ground.
Brenton But there rose a fountain out of the earth, and watered the whole face of the earth. BSB BSB: But springs welled up from the earth and watered the whole surface of the ground.
Brenton And God planted a garden eastward in Edem, and placed there the man whom he had formed. BSB BSB: And the LORD God planted a garden in Eden, in the east, where He placed the man He had formed.
Brenton And God made to spring up also out of the earth every tree beautiful to the eye and good for food, and the tree of life in the midst of the garden, and the tree of learning the knowledge of good and evil. BSB BSB: Out of the ground the LORD God gave growth to every tree that is pleasing to the eye and good for food. And in the middle of the garden were the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.
Brenton And a river proceeds out of Edem to water the garden, thence it divides itself into four heads. BSB BSB: Now a river flowed out of Eden to water the garden, and from there it branched into four headwaters:
Brenton The name of the one, Phisom, this it is which encircles the whole land of Evilat, where there is gold. BSB BSB: The name of the first river is the Pishon; it winds through the whole land of Havilah, where there is gold.
Brenton And the gold of that land is good, there also is carbuncle and emerald. BSB BSB: And the gold of that land is pure, and bdellium and onyx are found there.
Brenton And the name of the second river is Geon, this it is which encircles the whole land of Ethiopia. BSB BSB: The name of the second river is the Gihon; it winds through the whole land of Cush.
Brenton And the third river is Tigris, this is that which flows forth over against the Assyrians. And the fourth river is Euphrates. BSB BSB: The name of the third river is the Tigris; it runs along the east side of Assyria. And the fourth river is the Euphrates.
Brenton And the Lord God took the man whom he had formed, and placed him in the garden of Delight, to cultivate and keep it. BSB BSB: Then the LORD God took the man and placed him in the Garden of Eden to cultivate and keep it.
Brenton but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil—of it ye shall not eat, but in whatsoever day ye eat of it, ye shall surely die. BSB BSB: but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil; for in the day that you eat of it, you will surely die.”
Brenton And Adam gave names to all the cattle and to all the birds of the sky, and to all the wild beasts of the field, but for Adam there was not found a help like to himself. BSB BSB: The man gave names to all the livestock, to the birds of the air, and to every beast of the field. But for Adam no suitable helper was found.
Brenton And God brought a trance upon Adam, and he slept, and he took one of his ribs, and filled up the flesh instead thereof. BSB BSB: So the LORD God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep, and while he slept, He took one of the man’s ribs and closed up the area with flesh.
Brenton And God formed the rib which he took from Adam into a woman, and brought her to Adam. BSB BSB: And from the rib that the LORD God had taken from the man, He made a woman and brought her to him.
Brenton And Adam said, This now is bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called woman, because she was taken out of her husband. BSB BSB: And the man said: “This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called ‘woman,’ for out of man she was taken.”
Brenton And the two were naked, both Adam and his wife, and were not ashamed. BSB BSB: And the man and his wife were both naked, and they were not ashamed.
