The Birth of Isaac 1 Brenton And the Lord visited Sarrha, as he said, and the Lord did to Sarrha, as he spoke. BSB BSB: Now the LORD attended to Sarah as He had said, and the LORD did for Sarah what He had promised.
Brenton And she conceived and bore to Abraam a son in old age, at the set time according as the Lord spoke to him. BSB BSB: So Sarah conceived and bore a son to Abraham in his old age, at the very time God had promised.
Brenton And Abraam called the name of his son that was born to him, whom Sarrha bore to him, Isaac. BSB BSB: And Abraham gave the name Isaac to the son Sarah bore to him.
Brenton And Abraam circumcised Isaac on the eighth day, as God commanded him. BSB BSB: When his son Isaac was eight days old, Abraham circumcised him, as God had commanded him.
Brenton And Abraam was a hundred years old when Isaac his son was born to him. BSB BSB: Abraham was a hundred years old when his son Isaac was born to him.
Brenton And Sarrha said, The Lord has made laughter for me, for whoever shall hear shall rejoice with me. BSB BSB: Then Sarah said, “God has made me laugh, and everyone who hears of this will laugh with me.”
Brenton And she said, Who shall say to Abraam that Sarrha suckles a child? for I have born a child in my old age. BSB BSB: She added, “Who would have told Abraham that Sarah would nurse children? Yet I have borne him a son in his old age.”
Brenton And the child grew and was weaned, and Abraam made a great feast the day that his son Isaac was weaned. BSB BSB: So the child grew and was weaned, and Abraham held a great feast on the day Isaac was weaned.
Sarah Turns against Hagar (Galatians 4:21–30)
Brenton And Sarrha having seen the son of Agar the Egyptian who was born to Abraam, sporting with Isaac her son, BSB BSB: But Sarah saw that the son whom Hagar the Egyptian had borne to Abraham was mocking her son,
Brenton then she said to Abraam, Cast out this bondwoman and her son, for the son of this bondwoman shall not inherit with my son Isaac. BSB BSB: and she said to Abraham, “Expel the slave woman and her son, for the slave woman’s son will never share in the inheritance with my son Isaac!”
Brenton But the word appeared very hard before Abraam concerning his son. BSB BSB: Now this matter distressed Abraham greatly because it concerned his son Ishmael.
Brenton And moreover I will make the son of this bondwoman a great nation, because he is thy seed. BSB BSB: But I will also make a nation of the slave woman’s son, because he is your offspring.”
Brenton And Abraam rose up in the morning and took loaves and a skin of water, and gave them to Agar, and he put the child on her shoulder, and sent her away, and she having departed wandered in the wilderness near the well of the oath. BSB BSB: Early in the morning, Abraham got up, took bread and a skin of water, put them on Hagar’s shoulders, and sent her away with the boy. She left and wandered in the Wilderness of Beersheba.
Brenton And the water failed out of the skin, and she cast the child under a fir tree. BSB BSB: When the water in the skin was gone, she left the boy under one of the bushes.
Brenton And she departed and sat down opposite him at a distance, as it were a bow-shot, for she said, Surely I cannot see the death of my child: and she sat opposite him, and the child cried aloud and wept. BSB BSB: Then she went off and sat down nearby, about a bowshot away, for she said, “I cannot bear to watch the boy die!” And as she sat nearby, she lifted up her voice and wept.
Brenton Rise up, and take the child, and hold him in thine hand, for I will make him a great nation. BSB BSB: Get up, lift up the boy, and take him by the hand, for I will make him into a great nation.”
Brenton And God opened her eyes, and she saw a well of springing water; and she went and filled the skin with water, and gave the child drink. BSB BSB: Then God opened her eyes, and she saw a well of water. So she went and filled the skin with water and gave the boy a drink.
Brenton And God was with the child, and he grew and dwelt in the wilderness, and became an archer. BSB BSB: And God was with the boy, and he grew up and settled in the wilderness and became a great archer.
Brenton And he dwelt in the wilderness, and his mother took him a wife out of Pharan of Egypt. BSB BSB: And while he was dwelling in the Wilderness of Paran, his mother got a wife for him from the land of Egypt.
The Covenant at Beersheba 22 Brenton And it came to pass at that time that Abimelech spoke, and Ochozath his friend, and Phichol the chief captain of his host, to Abraam, saying, God is with thee in all things, whatsoever thou mayest do. BSB BSB: At that time Abimelech and Phicol the commander of his army said to Abraham, “God is with you in all that you do.
Brenton Now therefore swear to me by God that thou wilt not injure me, nor my seed, nor my name, but according to the righteousness which I have performed with thee thou shalt deal with me, and with the land in which thou hast sojourned. BSB BSB: Now, therefore, swear to me here before God that you will not deal falsely with me or my children or descendants. Show to me and to the country in which you reside the same kindness that I have shown to you.”
Brenton And Abraam said, I will swear. BSB BSB: And Abraham replied, “I swear it.”
Brenton And Abraam reproved Abimelech because of the wells of water, which the servants of Abimelech took away. BSB BSB: But when Abraham complained to Abimelech about a well that Abimelech’s servants had seized,
Brenton And Abimelech said to him, I know not who has done this thing to thee, neither didst thou tell it me, neither heard I it but only to-day. BSB BSB: Abimelech replied, “I do not know who has done this. You did not tell me, so I have not heard about it until today.”
Brenton And Abraam took sheep and calves, and gave them to Abimelech, and both made a covenant. BSB BSB: So Abraham brought sheep and cattle and gave them to Abimelech, and the two men made a covenant.
Brenton And Abraam set seven ewe-lambs by themselves. BSB BSB: Abraham separated seven ewe lambs from the flock,
Brenton And Abimelech said to Abraam, What are these seven ewe-lambs which thou hast set alone? BSB BSB: and Abimelech asked him, “Why have you set apart these seven ewe lambs?”
Brenton And Abraam said, Thou shalt receive the seven ewe-lambs of me, that they may be for me as a witness, that I dug this well. BSB BSB: He replied, “You are to accept the seven ewe lambs from my hand as my witness that I dug this well.”
Brenton Therefore he named the name of that place, The Well of the Oath, for there they both swore. BSB BSB: So that place was called Beersheba, because it was there that the two of them swore an oath.
Brenton And they made a covenant at the well of the oath. And there rose up Abimelech, Ochozath his friend, and Phichol the commander-in-chief of his army, and they returned to the land of the Phylistines. BSB BSB: After they had made the covenant at Beersheba, Abimelech and Phicol the commander of his army got up and returned to the land of the Philistines.
Brenton And Abraam planted a field at the well of the oath, and called there on the name of the Lord, the everlasting God. BSB BSB: And Abraham planted a tamarisk tree in Beersheba, and there he called upon the name of the LORD, the Eternal God.
Brenton And Abraam sojourned in the land of the Phylistines many days. BSB BSB: And Abraham resided in the land of the Philistines for a long time.
