The Defiling of Dinah 1 Brenton And Dina, the daughter of Lea, whom she bore to Jacob, went forth to observe the daughters of the inhabitants. BSB BSB: Now Dinah, the daughter Leah had borne to Jacob, went out to visit the daughters of the land.
Brenton And Sychem the son of Emmor the Evite, the ruler of the land, saw her, and took her and lay with her, and humbled her. BSB BSB: When Shechem son of Hamor the Hivite, the prince of the region, saw her, he took her and lay with her by force.
Brenton And he was attached to the soul of Dina the daughter of Jacob, and he loved the damsel, and he spoke kindly to the damsel. BSB BSB: And his soul was drawn to Dinah, the daughter of Jacob. He loved the young girl and spoke to her tenderly.
Brenton Sychem spoke to Emmor his father, saying, Take for me this damsel to wife. BSB BSB: So Shechem told his father Hamor, “Get me this girl as a wife.”
Brenton And Jacob heard that the son of Emmor had defiled Dina his daughter (now his sons were with his cattle in the plain). And Jacob was silent until they came. BSB BSB: Jacob heard that Shechem had defiled his daughter Dinah, but since his sons were with his livestock in the field, he remained silent about it until they returned.
Brenton And Emmor the father of Sychem went forth to Jacob, to speak to him. BSB BSB: Meanwhile, Shechem’s father Hamor came to speak with Jacob.
Brenton And the sons of Jacob came from the plain; and when they heard, the men were deeply pained, and it was very grievous to them, because the man wrought folly in Israel, having lain with the daughter of Jacob, and so it must not be. BSB BSB: When Jacob’s sons heard what had happened, they returned from the field. They were filled with grief and fury, because Shechem had committed an outrage in Israel by lying with Jacob’s daughter—a thing that should not be done.
Brenton And Emmor spoke to them, saying, Sychem my son has chosen in his heart your daughter; give her therefore to him for a wife, BSB BSB: But Hamor said to them, “My son Shechem longs for your daughter. Please give her to him as his wife.
Brenton and intermarry with us. Give us your daughters, and take our daughters for your sons. BSB BSB: Intermarry with us; give us your daughters and take our daughters for yourselves.
Brenton And dwell in the midst of us; and, behold, the land is spacious before you, dwell in it, and trade, and get possessions in it. BSB BSB: You may settle among us, and the land will be open to you. Live here, move about freely, and acquire your own property.”
Brenton And Sychem said to her father and to her brothers, I would find grace before you, and we will give whatever ye shall name. BSB BSB: Then Shechem said to Dinah’s father and brothers, “Grant me this favor, and I will give you whatever you ask.
Brenton Multiply your demand of dowry very much, and I will give accordingly as ye shall say to me, only ye shall give me this damsel for a wife. BSB BSB: Demand a high dowry and an expensive gift, and I will give you whatever you ask. Only give me the girl as my wife!”
The Revenge of Dinah’s Brothers 13 Brenton And the sons of Jacob answered to Sychem and Emmor his father craftily, and spoke to them, because they had defiled Dina their sister. BSB BSB: But because Shechem had defiled their sister Dinah, Jacob’s sons answered him and his father Hamor deceitfully.
Brenton And Symeon and Levi, the brothers of Dina, said to them, We shall not be able to do this thing, to give our sister to a man who is uncircumcised, for it is a reproach to us. BSB BSB: “We cannot do such a thing,” they said. “To give our sister to an uncircumcised man would be a disgrace to us.
Brenton Only on these terms will we conform to you, and dwell among you, if ye also will be as we are, in that every male of you be circumcised. BSB BSB: We will consent to this on one condition, that you become circumcised like us—every one of your males.
Brenton And we will give our daughters to you, and we will take of your daughters for wives to us, and we will dwell with you, and we will be as one race. BSB BSB: Then we will give you our daughters and take your daughters for ourselves. We will dwell among you and become one people.
Brenton But if ye will not hearken to us to be circumcised, we will take our daughter and depart. BSB BSB: But if you will not agree to be circumcised, then we will take our sister and go.”
Brenton And the words pleased Emmor, and Sychem the son of Emmor. BSB BSB: Their offer seemed good to Hamor and his son Shechem.
Brenton And the young man delayed not to do this thing, for he was much attached to Jacob's daughter, and he was the most honourable of all in his father's house. BSB BSB: The young man, who was the most respected of all his father’s household, did not hesitate to fulfill this request, because he was delighted with Jacob’s daughter.
Brenton And Emmor and Sychem his son came to the gate of their city, and spoke to the men of their city, saying, BSB BSB: So Hamor and his son Shechem went to the gate of their city and addressed the men of their city:
Brenton These men are peaceable, let them dwell with us upon the land, and let them trade in it, and behold the land is extensive before them; we will take their daughters to us for wives, and we will give them our daughters. BSB BSB: “These men are at peace with us. Let them live and trade in our land; indeed, it is large enough for them. Let us take their daughters in marriage and give our daughters to them.
Brenton Only on these terms will the men conform to us to dwell with us so as to be one people, if every male of us be circumcised, as they also are circumcised. BSB BSB: But only on this condition will the men agree to dwell with us and be one people: if all our men are circumcised as they are.
Brenton And shall not their cattle and their herds, and their possessions, be ours? only in this let us conform to them, and they will dwell with us. BSB BSB: Will not their livestock, their possessions, and all their animals become ours? Only let us consent to them, and they will dwell among us.”
Brenton And all that went in at the gate of their city hearkened to Emmor and Sychem his son, and they were circumcised in the flesh of their foreskin every male. BSB BSB: All the men who went out of the city gate listened to Hamor and his son Shechem, and every male of the city was circumcised.
Brenton And it came to pass on the third day, when they were in pain, the two sons of Jacob, Symeon and Levi, Dina's brethren, took each man his sword, and came upon the city securely, and slew every male. BSB BSB: Three days later, while they were still in pain, two of Jacob’s sons (Dinah’s brothers Simeon and Levi) took their swords, went into the unsuspecting city, and slaughtered every male.
Brenton And they slew Emmor and Sychem his son with the edge of the sword, and took Dina out of the house of Sychem, and went forth. BSB BSB: They killed Hamor and his son Shechem with their swords, took Dinah out of Shechem’s house, and went away.
Brenton But the sons of Jacob came upon the wounded, and ravaged the city wherein they had defiled Dina their sister. BSB BSB: Jacob’s other sons came upon the slaughter and looted the city, because their sister had been defiled.
Brenton And their sheep, and their oxen, and their asses they took, and all things whatsoever were in the city, and whatsoever were in the plain. BSB BSB: They took their flocks and herds and donkeys, and everything else in the city or in the field.
Brenton And they took captive all the persons of them, and all their store, and their wives, and plundered both whatever things there were in the city, and whatever things there were in the houses. BSB BSB: They carried off all their possessions and women and children, and they plundered everything in their houses.
Brenton And Jacob said to Symeon and Levi, Ye have made me hateful so that I should be evil to all the inhabitants of the land, both among the Chananites and the Pherezites, and I am few in number; they will gather themselves against me and cut me in pieces, and I shall be utterly destroyed, and my house. BSB BSB: Then Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, “You have brought trouble upon me by making me a stench to the Canaanites and Perizzites, the people of this land. We are few in number; if they unite against me and attack me, I and my household will be destroyed.”
Brenton And they said, Nay, but shall they treat our sister as an harlot? BSB BSB: But they replied, “Should he have treated our sister like a prostitute?”
