The Second Census of Israel (Numbers 1:1–4)
1 Brenton And it came to pass after the plague, that the Lord spoke to Moses and Eleazar the priest, saying, BSB BSB: After the plague had ended, the LORD said to Moses and Eleazar son of Aaron the priest,
2 Brenton Take the sum of all the congregation of the children of Israel, from twenty years old and upward, according to the houses of their lineage, every one that goes forth to battle in Israel. BSB BSB: “Take a census of the whole congregation of Israel by the houses of their fathers—all those twenty years of age or older who can serve in the army of Israel.”
3 Brenton And Moses and Eleazar the priest spoke in Araboth of Moab at the Jordan by Jericho, saying, BSB BSB: So on the plains of Moab by the Jordan, across from Jericho, Moses and Eleazar the priest issued the instruction,
4 Brenton This is the numbering from twenty years old and upward as the Lord commanded Moses. And the sons of Israel that came out of Egypt are as follows :BSB BSB: “Take a census of the men twenty years of age or older, as the LORD has commanded Moses.” And these were the Israelites who came out of the land of Egypt:
The Tribe of Reuben 5 Brenton Ruben was the first-born of Israel: and the sons of Ruben, Enoch, and the family of Enoch; to Phallu belongs the family of the Phalluites. BSB BSB: Reuben was the firstborn of Israel. These were the descendants of Reuben: The Hanochite clan from Hanoch, the Palluite clan from Pallu,
6 Brenton To Asron, the family of Asroni: to Charmi, the family of Charmi. BSB BSB: the Hezronite clan from Hezron, and the Carmite clan from Carmi.
7 Brenton These are the families of Ruben; and their numbering was forty-three thousand and seven hundred and thirty. BSB BSB: These were the clans of Reuben, and their registration numbered 43,730.
8 Brenton And the sons of Phallu were Eliab,— BSB BSB: Now the son of Pallu was Eliab,
9 Brenton and the sons of Eliab, Namuel, and Dathan, and Abiron: these are renowned men of the congregation; these are they that rose up against Moses and Aaron in the gathering of Core, in the rebellion against the Lord. BSB BSB: and the sons of Eliab were Nemuel, Dathan, and Abiram. It was Dathan and Abiram, chosen by the congregation, who rebelled against Moses and Aaron with the followers of Korah who rebelled against the LORD.
10 Brenton And the earth opened her mouth, and swallowed up them and Core, when their assembly perished, when the fire devoured the two hundred and fifty, and they were made a sign. BSB BSB: And the earth opened its mouth and swallowed them along with Korah, whose followers died when the fire consumed 250 men. They serve as a warning sign.
11 Brenton But the sons of Core died not. BSB BSB: However, the line of Korah did not die out.
The Tribe of Simeon 12 Brenton And the sons of Symeon:—the family of the sons of Symeon: to Namuel, belonged the family of the Namuelites; to Jamin the family of the Jaminites; to Jachin the family of the Jachinites. BSB BSB: These were the descendants of Simeon by their clans: The Nemuelite clan from Nemuel, the Jaminite clan from Jamin, the Jachinite clan from Jachin,
13 Brenton To Zara the family of the Zaraites; to Saul the family of the Saulites. BSB BSB: the Zerahite clan from Zerah, and the Shaulite clan from Shaul.
14 Brenton These are the families of Symeon according to their numbering, two and twenty thousand and two hundred. BSB BSB: These were the clans of Simeon, and there were 22,200 men.
The Tribe of Gad 15 Brenton And the sons of Juda, Er and Aunan; and Er and Aunan died in the land of Chanaan. BSB BSB: These were the descendants of Gad by their clans: The Zephonite clan from Zephon, the Haggite clan from Haggi, the Shunite clan from Shuni,
16 Brenton And these were the sons of Juda, according to their families: to Selom belonged the family of the Selonites; to Phares, the family of the Pharesites; to Zara, the family of the Zaraites. BSB BSB: the Oznite clan from Ozni, the Erite clan from Eri,
17 Brenton And the sons of Phares were, to Asron, the family of the Asronites; to Jamun, the family of the Jamunites. BSB BSB: the Arodite clan from Arod, and the Arelite clan from Areli.
18 Brenton These are the families of Juda according to their numbering, seventy-six thousand and five hundred. BSB BSB: These were the clans of Gad, and their registration numbered 40,500.
The Tribe of Judah 19 Brenton And the sons of Issachar according to their families: to Thola, the family of the Tholaites; to Phua, the family of the Phuaites. BSB BSB: The sons of Judah were Er and Onan, but they died in the land of Canaan.
20 Brenton To Jasub, the family of the Jasubites; to Samram, the family of the Samramites. BSB BSB: These were the descendants of Judah by their clans: The Shelanite clan from Shelah, the Perezite clan from Perez, and the Zerahite clan from Zerah.
21 Brenton These are the families of Issachar according to their numbering, sixty-four thousand and four hundred. BSB BSB: And these were the descendants of Perez: the Hezronite clan from Hezron and the Hamulite clan from Hamul.
22 Brenton The sons of Zabulon according to their families: to Sared, the family of the Saredites; to Allon, the family of the Allonites; to Allel, the family of the Allelites. BSB BSB: These were the clans of Judah, and their registration numbered 76,500.
The Tribe of Issachar 23 Brenton These are the families of Zabulon according to their numbering, sixty thousand and five hundred. BSB BSB: These were the descendants of Issachar by their clans: The Tolaite clan from Tola, the Punite clan from Puvah,
24 Brenton The sons of Gad according to their families: to Saphon, the family of the Saphonites; to Angi, the family of the Angites; to Suni, the family of the Sunites; BSB BSB: the Jashubite clan from Jashub, and the Shimronite clan from Shimron.
25 Brenton to Azeni, the family of the Azenites; to Addi, the family of the Addites: BSB BSB: These were the clans of Issachar, and their registration numbered 64,300.
The Tribe of Zebulun 26 Brenton to Aroadi, the family of the Aroadites; to Ariel, the family of the Arielites. BSB BSB: These were the descendants of Zebulun by their clans: The Seredite clan from Sered, the Elonite clan from Elon, and the Jahleelite clan from Jahleel.
27 Brenton These are the families of the children of Gad according to their numbering, forty-four thousand and five hundred. BSB BSB: These were the clans of Zebulun, and their registration numbered 60,500.
The Tribe of Manasseh 28 Brenton The sons of Aser according to their families; to Jamin, the family of the Jaminites; to Jesu, the family of the Jesusites; to Baria, the family of the Bariaites. BSB BSB: The descendants of Joseph included the clans of Manasseh and Ephraim.
29 Brenton To Chober, the family of the Choberites; to Melchiel, the family of the Melchielites. BSB BSB: These were the descendants of Manasseh: The Machirite clan from Machir, the father of Gilead, and the Gileadite clan from Gilead.
30 Brenton And the name of the daughter of Aser, Sara. BSB BSB: These were the descendants of Gilead: the Iezerite clan from Iezer, the Helekite clan from Helek,
31 Brenton These are the families of Aser according to their numbering, forty-three thousand and four hundred. BSB BSB: the Asrielite clan from Asriel, the Shechemite clan from Shechem,
32 Brenton The sons of Joseph according to their families, Manasse and Ephraim. BSB BSB: the Shemidaite clan from Shemida, and the Hepherite clan from Hepher.
33 Brenton The sons of Manasse. To Machir the family of the Machirites; and Machir begot Galaad: to Galaad, the family of the Galaadites. BSB BSB: Now Zelophehad son of Hepher had no sons but only daughters. The names of his daughters were Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah.
34 Brenton And these are the sons of Galaad; to Achiezer, the family of the Achiezerites; to Cheleg, the family of the Chelegites. BSB BSB: These were the clans of Manasseh, and their registration numbered 52,700.
The Tribe of Ephraim 35 Brenton To Esriel, the family of the Esrielites; to Sychem, the family of the Sychemites. BSB BSB: These were the descendants of Ephraim by their clans: The Shuthelahite clan from Shuthelah, the Becherite clan from Becher, and the Tahanite clan from Tahan.
36 Brenton To Symaer, the family of the Symaerites; and to Opher, the family of the Opherites. BSB BSB: And the descendants of Shuthelah were the Eranite clan from Eran.
37 Brenton And to Salpaad the son of Opher there were no sons, but daughters: and these were the names of the daughters of Salpaad; Mala, and Nua, and Egla, and Melcha, and Thersa. BSB BSB: These were the clans of Ephraim, and their registration numbered 32,500. These clans were the descendants of Joseph.
The Tribe of Benjamin 38 Brenton These are the families of Manasse according to their numbering, fifty-two thousand and seven hundred. BSB BSB: These were the descendants of Benjamin by their clans: The Belaite clan from Bela, the Ashbelite clan from Ashbel, the Ahiramite clan from Ahiram,
39 Brenton And these are the children of Ephraim; to Suthala, the family of the Suthalanites; to Tanach, the family of the Tanachites. BSB BSB: the Shuphamite clan from Shupham, and the Huphamite clan from Hupham.
40 Brenton These are the sons of Suthala; to Eden, the family of the Edenites. BSB BSB: And the descendants of Bela from Ard and Naaman were the Ardite clan from Ard and the Naamite clan from Naaman.
41 Brenton These are the families of Ephraim according to their numbering, thirty-two thousand and five hundred: these are the families of the children of Joseph according to their families. BSB BSB: These were the clans of Benjamin, and their registration numbered 45,600.
The Tribe of Dan 42 Brenton The sons of Benjamin according to their families; to Bale, the family of the Balites; to Asyber, the family of the Asyberites; to Jachiran, the family of the Jachiranites. BSB BSB: These were the descendants of Dan by their clans: The Shuhamite clan from Shuham. These were the clans of Dan.
43 Brenton To Sophan, the family of the Sophanites. BSB BSB: All of them were Shuhamite clans, and their registration numbered 64,400.
The Tribe of Asher 44 Brenton And the sons of Bale were Adar and Noeman; to Adar, the family of the Adarites; and to Noeman, the family of the Noemanites. BSB BSB: These were the descendants of Asher by their clans: The Imnite clan from Imnah, the Ishvite clan from Ishvi, and the Beriite clan from Beriah.
45 Brenton These are the sons of Benjamin by their families according to their numbering, thirty-five thousand and five hundred. BSB BSB: And these were the descendants of Beriah: the Heberite clan from Heber and the Malchielite clan from Malchiel.
46 Brenton And the sons of Dan according to their families; to Same, the family of the Sameites; these are the families of Dan according to their families. BSB BSB: And the name of Asher’s daughter was Serah.
47 Brenton All the families of Samei according to their numbering, sixty-four thousand and four hundred. BSB BSB: These were the clans of Asher, and their registration numbered 53,400.
The Tribe of Naphtali 48 Brenton The sons of Nephthali according to their families; to Asiel, the family of the Asielites; to Gauni, the family of the Gaunites. BSB BSB: These were the descendants of Naphtali by their clans: The Jahzeelite clan from Jahzeel, the Gunite clan from Guni,
49 Brenton To Jeser, the family of the Jeserites; to Sellem, the family of the Sellemites. BSB BSB: the Jezerite clan from Jezer, and the Shillemite clan from Shillem.
50 Brenton These are the families of Nephthali, according to their numbering, forty thousand and three hundred. BSB BSB: These were the clans of Naphtali, and their registration numbered 45,400.
51 Brenton This is the numbering of the children of Israel, six hundred and one thousand and seven hundred and thirty. BSB BSB: These men of Israel numbered 601,730 in all.
Inheritance by Lot 52 Brenton And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, BSB BSB: Then the LORD said to Moses,
53 Brenton To these the land shall be divided, so that they may inherit according to the number of the names. BSB BSB: “The land is to be divided among the tribes as an inheritance, according to the number of names.
54 Brenton To the greater number thou shalt give the greater inheritance, and to the less number thou shalt give the less inheritance: to each one, as they have been numbered, shall their inheritance be given. BSB BSB: Increase the inheritance for a large tribe and decrease it for a small one; each tribe is to receive its inheritance according to the number of those registered.
55 Brenton The land shall be divided to the names by lot, they shall inherit according to the tribes of their families. BSB BSB: Indeed, the land must be divided by lot; they shall receive their inheritance according to the names of the tribes of their fathers.
56 Brenton Thou shalt divide their inheritance by lot between the many and the few. BSB BSB: Each inheritance is to be divided by lot among the larger and smaller tribes.”
The Levites Numbered 57 Brenton And the sons of Levi according to their families; to Gedson, the family of the Gedsonites; to Caath, the family of the Caathites; to Merari, the family of the Merarites. BSB BSB: Now these were the Levites numbered by their clans: The Gershonite clan from Gershon, the Kohathite clan from Kohath, and the Merarite clan from Merari.
58 Brenton These are the families of the sons of Levi; the family of the Lobenites, the family of the Chebronites, the family of the Coreites, and the family of the Musites; and Caath begot Amram. BSB BSB: These were the families of the Levites: The Libnite clan, the Hebronite clan, the Mahlite clan, the Mushite clan, and the Korahite clan. Now Kohath was the father of Amram,
59 Brenton And the name of his wife was Jochabed, daughter of Levi, who bore these to Levi in Egypt, and she bore to Amram, Aaron and Moses, and Mariam their sister. BSB BSB: and Amram’s wife was named Jochebed. She was also a daughter of Levi, born to Levi in Egypt. To Amram she bore Aaron, Moses, and their sister Miriam.
60 Brenton And to Aaron were born both Nadab and Abiud, and Eleazar, and Ithamar. BSB BSB: Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar were born to Aaron,
61 Brenton And Nadab and Abiud died when they offered strange fire before the Lord in the wilderness of Sina. BSB BSB: but Nadab and Abihu died when they offered unauthorized fire before the LORD.
62 Brenton And there were according to their numbering, twenty-three thousand, every male from a month old and upward; for they were not numbered among the children of Israel, because they have no inheritance in the midst of the children of Israel. BSB BSB: The registration of the Levites totaled 23,000, every male a month old or more; they were not numbered among the other Israelites, because no inheritance was given to them among the Israelites.
Only Caleb and Joshua Remain 63 Brenton And this is the numbering of Moses and Eleazar the priest, who numbered the children of Israel in Araboth of Moab, at Jordan by Jericho. BSB BSB: These were the ones numbered by Moses and Eleazar the priest when they counted the Israelites on the plains of Moab by the Jordan, across from Jericho.
64 Brenton And among these there was not a man numbered by Moses and Aaron, whom, even the children of Israel, they numbered in the wilderness of Sinai. BSB BSB: Among all these, however, there was not one who had been numbered by Moses and Aaron the priest when they counted the Israelites in the Wilderness of Sinai.
65 Brenton For the Lord said to them, They shall surely die in the wilderness; and there was not left even one of them, except Chaleb the son of Jephonne, and Joshua the son of Naue. BSB BSB: For the LORD had told them that they would surely die in the wilderness. Not one was left except Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun.
