The Boundaries of Canaan (Genesis 15:8–21)
1 Brenton And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, BSB BSB: Then the LORD said to Moses,
2 Brenton Charge the children of Israel, and thou shalt say to them, Ye are entering into the land of Chanaan: it shall be to you for an inheritance, the land of Chanaan with its boundaries. BSB BSB: “Command the Israelites and say to them: When you enter the land of Canaan, it will be allotted to you as an inheritance with these boundaries:
3 Brenton And your southern side shall be from the wilderness of Sin to the border of Edom, and your border southward shall extend on the side of the salt sea eastward. BSB BSB: Your southern border will extend from the Wilderness of Zin along the border of Edom. On the east, your southern border will run from the end of the Salt Sea,
4 Brenton And your border shall go round you from the south to the ascent of Acrabin, and shall proceed by Ennac, and the going forth of it shall be southward to Cades Barne, and it shall go forth to the village of Arad, and shall proceed by Asemona. BSB BSB: cross south of the Ascent of Akrabbim, continue to Zin, and go south of Kadesh-barnea. Then it will go on to Hazar-addar and proceed to Azmon,
5 Brenton And the border shall compass from Asemona to the river of Egypt, and the sea shall be the termination. BSB BSB: where it will turn from Azmon, join the Brook of Egypt, and end at the Sea.
6 Brenton And ye shall have your border on the west, the great sea shall be the boundary: this shall be to you the border on the west. BSB BSB: Your western border will be the coastline of the Great Sea; this will be your boundary on the west.
7 Brenton And this shall be your northern border; from the great sea ye shall measure to yourselves, by the side of the mountain. BSB BSB: Your northern border will run from the Great Sea directly to Mount Hor,
8 Brenton And ye shall measure to yourselves the mountain from mount Hor at the entering in to Emath, and the termination of it shall be the coasts of Saradac. BSB BSB: and from Mount Hor to Lebo-hamath, then extend to Zedad,
9 Brenton And the border shall go out to Dephrona, and its termination shall be at Arsenain; this shall be your border from the north. BSB BSB: continue to Ziphron, and end at Hazar-enan. This will be your boundary on the north.
10 Brenton And ye shall measure to yourselves the eastern border from Arsenain to Sepphamar. BSB BSB: And your eastern border will run straight from Hazar-enan to Shepham,
11 Brenton And the border shall go down from Sepphamar to Bela eastward to the fountains, and the border shall go down from Bela behind the sea Chenereth eastward. BSB BSB: then go down from Shepham to Riblah on the east side of Ain and continue along the slopes east of the Sea of Chinnereth.
12 Brenton And the border shall go down to Jordan, and the termination shall be the salt sea; this shall be your land and its borders round about. BSB BSB: Then the border will go down along the Jordan and end at the Salt Sea. This will be your land, defined by its borders on all sides.”
13 Brenton And Moses charged the children of Israel, saying, This is the land which ye shall inherit by lot, even as the Lord commanded us to give it to the nine tribes and the half-tribe of Manasse. BSB BSB: So Moses commanded the Israelites, “Apportion this land by lot as an inheritance. The LORD has commanded that it be given to the nine and a half tribes.
14 Brenton For the tribe of the children of Ruben, and the tribe of the children of Gad have received their inheritance according to their families; and the half-tribe of Manasse have received their inheritances. BSB BSB: For the tribes of the Reubenites and Gadites, along with the half-tribe of Manasseh, have already received their inheritance.
15 Brenton Two tribes and half a tribe have received their inheritance beyond Jordan by Jericho from the south eastwards. BSB BSB: These two and a half tribes have received their inheritance across the Jordan from Jericho, toward the sunrise.”
Leaders to Divide the Land 16 Brenton And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, BSB BSB: Then the LORD said to Moses,
17 Brenton These are the names of the men who shall divide the land to you for an inheritance; Eleazar the priest and Joshua the son of Naue. BSB BSB: “These are the names of the men who are to assign the land as an inheritance for you: Eleazar the priest and Joshua son of Nun.
18 Brenton And ye shall take one ruler from each tribe to divide the land to you by lot. BSB BSB: Appoint one leader from each tribe to distribute the land.
19 Brenton And these are the names of the men; of the tribe of Juda, Chaleb the son of Jephonne. BSB BSB: These are their names: Caleb son of Jephunneh from the tribe of Judah;
20 Brenton Of the tribe of Symeon, Salamiel the son of Semiud. BSB BSB: Shemuel son of Ammihud from the tribe of Simeon;
21 Brenton Of the tribe of Benjamin, Eldad the son of Chaslon. BSB BSB: Elidad son of Chislon from the tribe of Benjamin;
22 Brenton Of the tribe of Dan the prince was Bacchir the son of Egli. BSB BSB: Bukki son of Jogli, a leader from the tribe of Dan;
23 Brenton Of the sons of Joseph of the tribe of the sons of Manasse, the prince was Aniel the son of Suphi. BSB BSB: Hanniel son of Ephod, a leader from the tribe of Manasseh son of Joseph;
24 Brenton Of the tribe of the sons of Ephraim, the prince was Camuel the son of Sabathan. BSB BSB: Kemuel son of Shiphtan, a leader from the tribe of Ephraim;
25 Brenton Of the tribe of Zabulon, the prince was Elisaphan the son of Pharnac. BSB BSB: Eli-zaphan son of Parnach, a leader from the tribe of Zebulun;
26 Brenton Of the tribe of the sons of Issachar, the prince was Phaltiel the son of Oza. BSB BSB: Paltiel son of Azzan, a leader from the tribe of Issachar;
27 Brenton Of the tribe of the children of Aser, the prince was Achior the son of Selemi. BSB BSB: Ahihud son of Shelomi, a leader from the tribe of Asher;
28 Brenton Of the tribe of Nephthali, the prince was Phadael the son of Jamiud. BSB BSB: and Pedahel son of Ammihud, a leader from the tribe of Naphtali.”
29 Brenton These did the Lord command to distribute the inheritances to the children of Israel in the land of Chanaan. BSB BSB: These are the ones whom the LORD commanded to apportion the inheritance to the Israelites in the land of Canaan.
