Redeem Us, O God (Romans 8:35–39)
Brenton O God, we have heard with our ears, our fathers have told us, the work which thou wroughtest in their days, in the days of old. BSB BSB: For the choirmaster. A Maskil of the sons of Korah. We have heard with our ears, O God; our fathers have told us the work You did in their days, in the days of old.
Brenton Thine hand utterly destroyed the heathen, and thou didst plant them: thou didst afflict the nations, and cast them out. BSB BSB: With Your hand You drove out the nations and planted our fathers there; You crushed the peoples and cast them out.
Brenton For they inherited not the land by their own sword, and their own arm did not deliver them; but thy right hand, and thine arm, and the light of thy countenance, because thou wert well pleased in them. BSB BSB: For it was not by their sword that they took the land; their arm did not bring them victory. It was by Your right hand, Your arm, and the light of Your face, because You favored them.
Brenton Thou art indeed my King and my God, who commandest deliverances for Jacob. BSB BSB: You are my King, O God, who ordains victories for Jacob.
Brenton In thee will we push down our enemies, and in thy name will we bring to nought them that rise up against us. BSB BSB: Through You we repel our foes; through Your name we trample our enemies.
Brenton For I will not trust in my bow, and my sword shall not save me. BSB BSB: For I do not trust in my bow, nor does my sword save me.
Brenton For thou hast saved us from them that afflicted us, and hast put to shame them that hated us. BSB BSB: For You save us from our enemies; You put those who hate us to shame.
Brenton In God will we make our boast all the day, and to thy name will we give thanks for ever. Pause. BSB BSB: In God we have boasted all day long, and Your name we will praise forever. Selah
Brenton But now thou hast cast off, and put us to shame; and thou wilt not go forth with our hosts. BSB BSB: But You have rejected and humbled us; You no longer go forth with our armies.
Brenton Thou hast turned us back before our enemies; and they that hated us spoiled for themselves. BSB BSB: You have made us retreat from the foe, and those who hate us have plundered us.
Brenton Thou madest us as sheep for meat; and thou scatteredst us among the nations. BSB BSB: You have given us up as sheep to be devoured; You have scattered us among the nations.
Brenton Thou hast sold thy people without price, and there was no profit by their exchange. BSB BSB: You sell Your people for nothing; no profit do You gain from their sale.
Brenton Thou hast made us a reproach to our neighbours, a scorn and derision to them that are round about us. BSB BSB: You have made us a reproach to our neighbors, a mockery and derision to those around us.
Brenton Thou hast made us a proverb among the Gentiles, a shaking of the head among the nations. BSB BSB: You have made us a byword among the nations, a laughingstock among the peoples.
Brenton All the day my shame is before me, and the confusion of my face has covered me, BSB BSB: All day long my disgrace is before me, and shame has covered my face,
Brenton because of the voice of the slanderer and reviler; because of the enemy and avenger. BSB BSB: at the voice of the scorner and reviler, because of the enemy, bent on revenge.
Brenton All these things are come upon us: but we have not forgotten thee, neither have we dealt unrighteously in thy covenant. BSB BSB: All this has come upon us, though we have not forgotten You or betrayed Your covenant.
Brenton And our heart has not gone back; but thou hast turned aside our paths from thy way. BSB BSB: Our hearts have not turned back; our steps have not strayed from Your path.
Brenton For thou hast laid us low in a place of affliction, and the shadow of death has covered us. BSB BSB: But You have crushed us in the lair of jackals; You have covered us with deepest darkness.
Brenton If we have forgotten the name of our God, and if we have spread out our hands to a strange god; shall not God search these things out? BSB BSB: If we had forgotten the name of our God or spread out our hands to a foreign god,
Brenton for he knows the secrets of the heart. BSB BSB: would not God have discovered, since He knows the secrets of the heart?
Brenton For, for thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are counted as sheep for slaughter. BSB BSB: Yet for Your sake we face death all day long; we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered.
Brenton Awake, wherefore sleepest thou, O Lord? arise, and do not cast us off for ever. BSB BSB: Wake up, O Lord! Why are You sleeping? Arise! Do not reject us forever.
Brenton Wherefore turnest thou thy face away, and forgettest our poverty and our affliction? BSB BSB: Why do You hide Your face and forget our affliction and oppression?
Brenton For our soul has been brought down to the dust; our belly has cleaved to the earth. BSB BSB: For our soul has sunk to the dust; our bodies cling to the earth.
Brenton Arise, O Lord, help us, and redeem us for thy name's sake. BSB BSB: Rise up; be our help! Redeem us on account of Your loving devotion.
