BOOK IV From Everlasting to Everlasting 3 Brenton Turn not man back to his low place, whereas thou saidst, Return, ye sons of men? BSB BSB: You return man to dust, saying, “Return, O sons of mortals.”
Brenton For a thousand years in thy sight are as the yesterday which is past, and as a watch in the night. BSB BSB: For in Your sight a thousand years are but a day that passes, or a watch of the night.
Brenton Years shall be vanity to them: let the morning pass away as grass. BSB BSB: You sweep them away in their sleep; they are like the new grass of the morning—
Brenton In the morning let it flower, and pass away: in the evening let it droop, let it be withered and dried up. BSB BSB: in the morning it springs up new, but by evening it fades and withers.
Brenton For we have perished in thine anger, and in thy wrath we have been troubled. BSB BSB: For we are consumed by Your anger and terrified by Your wrath.
Brenton Thou hast set our transgressions before thee: our age is in the light of thy countenance. BSB BSB: You have set our iniquities before You, our secret sins in the light of Your presence.
Brenton For all our days are gone, and we have passed away in thy wrath: our years have spun out their tale as a spider. BSB BSB: For all our days decline in Your fury; we finish our years with a sigh.
Brenton As for the days of our years, in them are seventy years; and if men should be in strength, eighty years: and the greater part of them would be labour and trouble; for weakness overtakes us, and we shall be chastened.BSB BSB: The length of our days is seventy years—or eighty if we are strong—yet their pride is but labor and sorrow, for they quickly pass, and we fly away.
Brenton Who knows the power of thy wrath? BSB BSB: Who knows the power of Your anger? Your wrath matches the fear You are due.
Brenton and who knows how to number his days because of the fear of thy wrath? So manifest thy right hand, and those that are instructed in wisdom in the heart. BSB BSB: So teach us to number our days, that we may present a heart of wisdom.
Brenton Return, O Lord, how long? and be intreated concerning thy servants. BSB BSB: Return, O LORD! How long will it be? Have compassion on Your servants.
Brenton We have been satisfied in the morning with thy mercy; and we did exult and rejoice: BSB BSB: Satisfy us in the morning with Your loving devotion, that we may sing for joy and be glad all our days.
Brenton let us rejoice in all our days, in return for the days wherein thou didst afflict us, the years wherein we saw evil. BSB BSB: Make us glad for as many days as You have afflicted us, for as many years as we have seen evil.
Brenton And look upon thy servants, and upon thy works; and guide their children. BSB BSB: May Your work be shown to Your servants, and Your splendor to their children.
Brenton And let the brightness of the Lord our God be upon us: and do thou direct for us the works of our hands. BSB BSB: May the favor of the Lord our God rest upon us; establish for us the work of our hands—yes, establish the work of our hands!
