Berean Standard BibleKing James Version

1. Prologue

   (Luke 1:1–4)

2. 1BSBIn my first book, O Theophilus, I wrote about all that Jesus began to do and to teach,KJVKJV: The former treatise have I made, O Theophilus, of all that Jesus began both to do and teach,
3. 2BSBuntil the day He was taken up to heaven, after giving instructions through the Holy Spirit to the apostles He had chosen.KJVKJV: Until the day in which he was taken up, after that he through the Holy Ghost had given commandments unto the apostles whom he had chosen:
4. 3BSBAfter His suffering, He presented Himself to them with many convincing proofs that He was alive. He appeared to them over a span of forty days and spoke about the kingdom of God.KJVKJV: To whom also he shewed himself alive after his passion by many infallible proofs, being seen of them forty days, and speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God:
5. 4BSBAnd while they were gathered together, He commanded them: “Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift the Father promised, which you have heard Me discuss.KJVKJV: And, being assembled together with them, commanded them that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father, which, saith he, ye have heard of me.
6. 5BSBFor John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.”KJVKJV: For John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence.

7. The Ascension

   (Mark 16:19–20; Luke 24:50–53)

8. 6BSBSo when they came together, they asked Him, “Lord, will You at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?”KJVKJV: When they therefore were come together, they asked of him, saying, Lord, wilt thou at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel?
9. 7BSBJesus replied, “It is not for you to know times or seasons that the Father has fixed by His own authority.KJVKJV: And he said unto them, It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father hath put in his own power.
10. 8BSBBut you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you, and you will be My witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”KJVKJV: But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judæa, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.
11. 9BSBAfter He had said this, they watched as He was taken up, and a cloud hid Him from their sight.KJVKJV: And when he had spoken these things, while they beheld, he was taken up; and a cloud received him out of their sight.
12. 10BSBThey were looking intently into the sky as He was going, when suddenly two men dressed in white stood beside them.KJVKJV: And while they looked stedfastly toward heaven as he went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel;
13. 11BSB“Men of Galilee,” they said, “why do you stand here looking into the sky? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen Him go into heaven.”KJVKJV: Which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven.

14. Matthias Replaces Judas

15. 12BSBThen they returned to Jerusalem from the Mount of Olives, which is near the city, a Sabbath day’s journey away.KJVKJV: Then returned they unto Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is from Jerusalem a sabbath day’s journey.
16. 13BSBWhen they arrived, they went to the upper room where they were staying: Peter and John, James and Andrew, Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew, James son of Alphaeus, Simon the Zealot, and Judas son of James.KJVKJV: And when they were come in, they went up into an upper room, where abode both Peter, and James, and John, and Andrew, Philip, and Thomas, Bartholomew, and Matthew, James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon Zelotes, and Judas the brother of James.
17. 14BSBWith one accord they all continued in prayer, along with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with His brothers.KJVKJV: These all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication, with the women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brethren.
18. 15BSBIn those days Peter stood up among the brothers (a gathering of about a hundred and twenty) and said,KJVKJV: And in those days Peter stood up in the midst of the disciples, and said, (the number of names together were about an hundred and twenty,)
19. 16BSB“Brothers, the Scripture had to be fulfilled that the Holy Spirit foretold through the mouth of David concerning Judas, who became a guide for those who arrested Jesus.KJVKJV: Men and brethren, this scripture must needs have been fulfilled, which the Holy Ghost by the mouth of David spake before concerning Judas, which was guide to them that took Jesus.
20. 17BSBHe was one of our number and shared in this ministry.”KJVKJV: For he was numbered with us, and had obtained part of this ministry.
21. 18BSB(Now with the reward for his wickedness Judas bought a field; there he fell headlong and burst open in the middle, and all his intestines spilled out.KJVKJV: Now this man purchased a field with the reward of iniquity; and falling headlong, he burst asunder in the midst, and all his bowels gushed out.
22. 19BSBThis became known to all who lived in Jerusalem, so they called that field in their own language Akeldama, that is, Field of Blood.)KJVKJV: And it was known unto all the dwellers at Jerusalem; insomuch as that field is called in their proper tongue, Aceldama, that is to say, The field of blood.
23. 20BSB“For it is written in the book of Psalms: ‘May his place be deserted; let there be no one to dwell in it,’ and, ‘May another take his position.’KJVKJV: For it is written in the book of Psalms, Let his habitation be desolate, and let no man dwell therein: and his bishoprick let another take.
24. 21BSBTherefore it is necessary to choose one of the men who have accompanied us the whole time the Lord Jesus went in and out among us,KJVKJV: Wherefore of these men which have companied with us all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us,
25. 22BSBbeginning from John’s baptism until the day Jesus was taken up from us. For one of these must become a witness with us of His resurrection.”KJVKJV: Beginning from the baptism of John, unto that same day that he was taken up from us, must one be ordained to be a witness with us of his resurrection.
26. 23BSBSo they proposed two men: Joseph called Barsabbas (also known as Justus) and Matthias.KJVKJV: And they appointed two, Joseph called Barsabas, who was surnamed Justus, and Matthias.
27. 24BSBAnd they prayed, “Lord, You know everyone’s heart. Show us which of these two You have chosenKJVKJV: And they prayed, and said, Thou, Lord, which knowest the hearts of all men, shew whether of these two thou hast chosen,
28. 25BSBto take up this ministry and apostleship, which Judas abandoned to go to his rightful place.”KJVKJV: That he may take part of this ministry and apostleship, from which Judas by transgression fell, that he might go to his own place.
29. 26BSBThen they cast lots, and the lot fell to Matthias. So he was added to the eleven apostles.KJVKJV: And they gave forth their lots; and the lot fell upon Matthias; and he was numbered with the eleven apostles.
