Ephesians 5Ephesians5

Berean Standard BibleKing James Version

1. Imitators of God

2. 1BSBBe imitators of God, therefore, as beloved children,KJVKJV: Be ye therefore followers of God, as dear children;
3. 2BSBand walk in love, just as Christ loved us and gave Himself up for us as a fragrant sacrificial offering to God.KJVKJV: And walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweetsmelling savour.
4. 3BSBBut among you, as is proper among the saints, there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed.KJVKJV: But fornication, and all uncleanness, or covetousness, let it not be once named among you, as becometh saints;
5. 4BSBNor should there be obscenity, foolish talk, or crude joking, which are out of character, but rather thanksgiving.KJVKJV: Neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor jesting, which are not convenient: but rather giving of thanks.
6. 5BSBFor of this you can be sure: No immoral, impure, or greedy person (that is, an idolater) has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God.KJVKJV: For this ye know, that no whoremonger, nor unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, hath any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God.
7. 6BSBLet no one deceive you with empty words, for because of such things the wrath of God is coming on the sons of disobedience.KJVKJV: Let no man deceive you with vain words: for because of these things cometh the wrath of God upon the children of disobedience.
8. 7BSBTherefore do not be partakers with them.KJVKJV: Be not ye therefore partakers with them.

9. Children of Light

10. 8BSBFor you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light,KJVKJV: For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light:
11. 9BSBfor the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness, and truth.KJVKJV: (For the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth;)
12. 10BSBTest and prove what pleases the Lord.KJVKJV: Proving what is acceptable unto the Lord.
13. 11BSBHave no fellowship with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them.KJVKJV: And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them.
14. 12BSBFor it is shameful even to mention what the disobedient do in secret.KJVKJV: For it is a shame even to speak of those things which are done of them in secret.
15. 13BSBBut everything exposed by the light becomes visible, for everything that is illuminated becomes a light itself.KJVKJV: But all things that are reproved are made manifest by the light: for whatsoever doth make manifest is light.
16. 14BSBSo it is said: “Wake up, O sleeper, rise up from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.”KJVKJV: Wherefore he saith, Awake thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee light.
17. 15BSBPay careful attention, then, to how you walk, not as unwise but as wise,KJVKJV: See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise,
18. 16BSBredeeming the time, because the days are evil.KJVKJV: Redeeming the time, because the days are evil.
19. 17BSBTherefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is.KJVKJV: Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is.
20. 18BSBDo not get drunk on wine, which leads to reckless indiscretion. Instead, be filled with the Spirit.KJVKJV: And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit;
21. 19BSBSpeak to one another with psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs. Sing and make music in your hearts to the Lord,KJVKJV: Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord;
22. 20BSBalways giving thanks to God the Father for everything in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.KJVKJV: Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ;

23. Wives and Husbands

    (Song of Solomon 1:1–17; 1 Peter 3:1–7)

24. 21BSBSubmit to one another out of reverence for Christ.KJVKJV: Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God.
25. 22BSBWives, submit to your husbands as to the Lord.KJVKJV: Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord.
26. 23BSBFor the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, His body, of which He is the Savior.KJVKJV: For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body.
27. 24BSBNow as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything.KJVKJV: Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing.
28. 25BSBHusbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave Himself up for herKJVKJV: Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it;
29. 26BSBto sanctify her, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word,KJVKJV: That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word,
30. 27BSBand to present her to Himself as a glorious church, without stain or wrinkle or any such blemish, but holy and blameless.KJVKJV: That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.
31. 28BSBIn the same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself.KJVKJV: So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife loveth himself.
32. 29BSBIndeed, no one ever hated his own body, but he nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ does the church.KJVKJV: For no man ever yet hated his own flesh; but nourisheth and cherisheth it, even as the Lord the church:
33. 30BSBFor we are members of His body.KJVKJV: For we are members of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones.
34. 31BSB“For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.”KJVKJV: For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh.
35. 32BSBThis mystery is profound, but I am speaking about Christ and the church.KJVKJV: This is a great mystery: but I speak concerning Christ and the church.
36. 33BSBNevertheless, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.KJVKJV: Nevertheless let every one of you in particular so love his wife even as himself; and the wife see that she reverence her husband.
