Berean Standard BibleKing James Version

1. Drought, Famine, Sword, and Plague

2. 1BSBThis is the word of the LORD that came to Jeremiah concerning the drought:KJVKJV: The word of the LORD that came to Jeremiah concerning the dearth.
3. 2BSB“Judah mourns and her gates languish. Her people wail for the land, and a cry goes up from Jerusalem.KJVKJV: Judah mourneth, and the gates thereof languish; they are black unto the ground; and the cry of Jerusalem is gone up.
4. 3BSBThe nobles send their servants for water; they go to the cisterns, but find no water; their jars return empty. They are ashamed and humiliated; they cover their heads.KJVKJV: And their nobles have sent their little ones to the waters: they came to the pits, and found no water; they returned with their vessels empty; they were ashamed and confounded, and covered their heads.
5. 4BSBThe ground is cracked because no rain has fallen on the land. The farmers are ashamed; they cover their heads.KJVKJV: Because the ground is chapt, for there was no rain in the earth, the plowmen were ashamed, they covered their heads.
6. 5BSBEven the doe in the field deserts her newborn fawn because there is no grass.KJVKJV: Yea, the hind also calved in the field, and forsook it, because there was no grass.
7. 6BSBWild donkeys stand on barren heights; they pant for air like jackals; their eyes fail for lack of pasture.”KJVKJV: And the wild asses did stand in the high places, they snuffed up the wind like dragons; their eyes did fail, because there was no grass.
8. 7BSBAlthough our iniquities testify against us, O LORD, act for the sake of Your name. Indeed, our rebellions are many; we have sinned against You.KJVKJV: O LORD, though our iniquities testify against us, do thou it for thy name’s sake: for our backslidings are many; we have sinned against thee.
9. 8BSBO Hope of Israel, its Savior in times of distress, why are You like a stranger in the land, like a traveler who stays but a night?KJVKJV: O the hope of Israel, the saviour thereof in time of trouble, why shouldest thou be as a stranger in the land, and as a wayfaring man that turneth aside to tarry for a night?
10. 9BSBWhy are You like a man taken by surprise, like a warrior powerless to save? Yet You are among us, O LORD, and we are called by Your name. Do not forsake us!KJVKJV: Why shouldest thou be as a man astonied, as a mighty man that cannot save? yet thou, O LORD, art in the midst of us, and we are called by thy name; leave us not.
11. 10BSBThis is what the LORD says about this people: “Truly they love to wander; they have not restrained their feet. So the LORD does not accept them; He will now remember their iniquity and punish them for their sins.”KJVKJV: Thus saith the LORD unto this people, Thus have they loved to wander, they have not refrained their feet, therefore the LORD doth not accept them; he will now remember their iniquity, and visit their sins.
12. 11BSBThen the LORD said to me, “Do not pray for the well-being of this people.KJVKJV: Then said the LORD unto me, Pray not for this people for their good.
13. 12BSBAlthough they may fast, I will not listen to their cry; although they may offer burnt offerings and grain offerings, I will not accept them. Instead, I will finish them off by sword and famine and plague.”KJVKJV: When they fast, I will not hear their cry; and when they offer burnt offering and an oblation, I will not accept them: but I will consume them by the sword, and by the famine, and by the pestilence.
14. 13BSB“Ah, Lord GOD!” I replied, “Look, the prophets are telling them, ‘You will not see the sword or suffer famine, but I will give you lasting peace in this place.’”KJVKJV: Then said I, Ah, Lord GOD! behold, the prophets say unto them, Ye shall not see the sword, neither shall ye have famine; but I will give you assured peace in this place.
15. 14BSB“The prophets are prophesying lies in My name,” replied the LORD. “I did not send them or appoint them or speak to them. They are prophesying to you a false vision, a worthless divination, the futility and delusion of their own minds.KJVKJV: Then the LORD said unto me, The prophets prophesy lies in my name: I sent them not, neither have I commanded them, neither spake unto them: they prophesy unto you a false vision and divination, and a thing of nought, and the deceit of their heart.
16. 15BSBTherefore this is what the LORD says about the prophets who prophesy in My name: I did not send them, yet they say, ‘No sword or famine will touch this land.’ By sword and famine these very prophets will meet their end!KJVKJV: Therefore thus saith the LORD concerning the prophets that prophesy in my name, and I sent them not, yet they say, Sword and famine shall not be in this land; By sword and famine shall those prophets be consumed.
17. 16BSBAnd the people to whom they prophesy will be thrown into the streets of Jerusalem because of famine and sword. There will be no one to bury them or their wives, their sons or their daughters. I will pour out their own evil upon them.KJVKJV: And the people to whom they prophesy shall be cast out in the streets of Jerusalem because of the famine and the sword; and they shall have none to bury them, them, their wives, nor their sons, nor their daughters: for I will pour their wickedness upon them.
18. 17BSBYou are to speak this word to them: ‘My eyes overflow with tears; day and night they do not cease, for the virgin daughter of my people has been shattered by a crushing blow, a severely grievous wound.KJVKJV: Therefore thou shalt say this word unto them; Let mine eyes run down with tears night and day, and let them not cease: for the virgin daughter of my people is broken with a great breach, with a very grievous blow.
19. 18BSBIf I go out to the country, I see those slain by the sword; if I enter the city, I see those ravaged by famine! For both prophet and priest travel to a land they do not know.’”KJVKJV: If I go forth into the field, then behold the slain with the sword! and if I enter into the city, then behold them that are sick with famine! yea, both the prophet and the priest go about into a land that they know not.

20. A Prayer for Mercy

    (Isaiah 63:15–19)

21. 19BSBHave You rejected Judah completely? Do You despise Zion? Why have You stricken us so that we are beyond healing? We hoped for peace, but no good has come, and for the time of healing, but there was only terror.KJVKJV: Hast thou utterly rejected Judah? hath thy soul lothed Zion? why hast thou smitten us, and there is no healing for us? we looked for peace, and there is no good; and for the time of healing, and behold trouble!
22. 20BSBWe acknowledge our wickedness, O LORD, the guilt of our fathers; indeed, we have sinned against You.KJVKJV: We acknowledge, O LORD, our wickedness, and the iniquity of our fathers: for we have sinned against thee.
23. 21BSBFor the sake of Your name do not despise us; do not disgrace Your glorious throne. Remember Your covenant with us; do not break it.KJVKJV: Do not abhor us, for thy name’s sake, do not disgrace the throne of thy glory: remember, break not thy covenant with us.
24. 22BSBCan the worthless idols of the nations bring rain? Do the skies alone send showers? Is this not by You, O LORD our God? So we put our hope in You, for You have done all these things.KJVKJV: Are there any among the vanities of the Gentiles that can cause rain? or can the heavens give showers? art not thou he, O LORD our God? therefore we will wait upon thee: for thou hast made all these things.
