1. Job’s Character and Wealth

   (James 5:7–12)

2. 1BSBThere was a man in the land of Uz whose name was Job. And this man was blameless and upright, fearing God and shunning evil.KJVKJV: There was a man in the land of Uz, whose name was Job; and that man was perfect and upright, and one that feared God, and eschewed evil.
3. 2BSBHe had seven sons and three daughters,KJVKJV: And there were born unto him seven sons and three daughters.
4. 3BSBand he owned 7,000 sheep, 3,000 camels, 500 yoke of oxen, 500 female donkeys, and a very large number of servants. Job was the greatest man of all the people of the East.KJVKJV: His substance also was seven thousand sheep, and three thousand camels, and five hundred yoke of oxen, and five hundred she asses, and a very great household; so that this man was the greatest of all the men of the east.
5. 4BSBJob’s sons would take turns holding feasts in their homes, and they would invite their three sisters to eat and drink with them.KJVKJV: And his sons went and feasted in their houses, every one his day; and sent and called for their three sisters to eat and to drink with them.
6. 5BSBAnd when the days of feasting were over, Job would send for his children to purify them, rising early in the morning to offer burnt offerings for all of them. For Job thought, “Perhaps my children have sinned and cursed God in their hearts.” This was Job’s regular practice.KJVKJV: And it was so, when the days of their feasting were gone about, that Job sent and sanctified them, and rose up early in the morning, and offered burnt offerings according to the number of them all: for Job said, It may be that my sons have sinned, and cursed God in their hearts. Thus did Job continually.

7. Satan’s First Attack

8. 6BSBOne day the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan also came with them.KJVKJV: Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan came also among them.
9. 7BSB“Where have you come from?” said the LORD to Satan. “From roaming through the earth,” he replied, “and walking back and forth in it.”KJVKJV: And the LORD said unto Satan, Whence comest thou? Then Satan answered the LORD, and said, From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it.
10. 8BSBThen the LORD said to Satan, “Have you considered My servant Job? For there is no one on earth like him, a man who is blameless and upright, who fears God and shuns evil.”KJVKJV: And the LORD said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil?
11. 9BSBSatan answered the LORD, “Does Job fear God for nothing?KJVKJV: Then Satan answered the LORD, and said, Doth Job fear God for nought?
12. 10BSBHave You not placed a hedge on every side around him and his household and all that he owns? You have blessed the work of his hands, and his possessions have increased in the land.KJVKJV: Hast not thou made an hedge about him, and about his house, and about all that he hath on every side? thou hast blessed the work of his hands, and his substance is increased in the land.
13. 11BSBBut stretch out Your hand and strike all that he has, and he will surely curse You to Your face.”KJVKJV: But put forth thine hand now, and touch all that he hath, and he will curse thee to thy face.
14. 12BSB“Very well,” said the LORD to Satan. “Everything he has is in your hands, but you must not lay a hand on the man himself.” Then Satan went out from the presence of the LORD.KJVKJV: And the LORD said unto Satan, Behold, all that he hath is in thy power; only upon himself put not forth thine hand. So Satan went forth from the presence of the LORD.
