1. The Tradition of the Elders

   (Matthew 15:1–9)

2. 1BSBThen the Pharisees and some of the scribes who had come from Jerusalem gathered around Jesus,KJVKJV: Then came together unto him the Pharisees, and certain of the scribes, which came from Jerusalem.
3. 2BSBand they saw some of His disciples eating with hands that were defiled—that is, unwashed.KJVKJV: And when they saw some of his disciples eat bread with defiled, that is to say, with unwashen, hands, they found fault.
4. 3BSBNow in holding to the tradition of the elders, the Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat until they wash their hands ceremonially.KJVKJV: For the Pharisees, and all the Jews, except they wash their hands oft, eat not, holding the tradition of the elders.
5. 4BSBAnd on returning from the market, they do not eat unless they wash. And there are many other traditions for them to observe, including the washing of cups, pitchers, kettles, and couches for dining.KJVKJV: And when they come from the market, except they wash, they eat not. And many other things there be, which they have received to hold, as the washing of cups, and pots, brasen vessels, and of tables.
6. 5BSBSo the Pharisees and scribes questioned Jesus: “Why do Your disciples not walk according to the tradition of the elders? Instead, they eat with defiled hands.”KJVKJV: Then the Pharisees and scribes asked him, Why walk not thy disciples according to the tradition of the elders, but eat bread with unwashen hands?
7. 6BSBJesus answered them, “Isaiah prophesied correctly about you hypocrites, as it is written: ‘These people honor Me with their lips, but their hearts are far from Me.KJVKJV: He answered and said unto them, Well hath Esaias prophesied of you hypocrites, as it is written, This people honoureth me with their lips, but their heart is far from me.
8. 7BSBThey worship Me in vain; they teach as doctrine the precepts of men.’KJVKJV: Howbeit in vain do they worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.
9. 8BSBYou have disregarded the commandment of God to keep the tradition of men.”KJVKJV: For laying aside the commandment of God, ye hold the tradition of men, as the washing of pots and cups: and many other such like things ye do.
10. 9BSBHe went on to say, “You neatly set aside the command of God to maintain your own tradition.KJVKJV: And he said unto them, Full well ye reject the commandment of God, that ye may keep your own tradition.
11. 10BSBFor Moses said, ‘Honor your father and your mother’ and ‘Anyone who curses his father or mother must be put to death.’KJVKJV: For Moses said, Honour thy father and thy mother; and, Whoso curseth father or mother, let him die the death:
12. 11BSBBut you say that if a man says to his father or mother, ‘Whatever you would have received from me is Corban’ (that is, a gift devoted to God),KJVKJV: But ye say, If a man shall say to his father or mother, It is Corban, that is to say, a gift, by whatsoever thou mightest be profited by me; he shall be free.
13. 12BSBhe is no longer permitted to do anything for his father or mother.KJVKJV: And ye suffer him no more to do ought for his father or his mother;
14. 13BSBThus you nullify the word of God by the tradition you have handed down. And you do so in many such matters.”KJVKJV: Making the word of God of none effect through your tradition, which ye have delivered: and many such like things do ye.

15. What Defiles a Man

    (Matthew 15:10–20)

16. 14BSBOnce again Jesus called the crowd to Him and said, “All of you, listen to Me and understand:KJVKJV: And when he had called all the people unto him, he said unto them, Hearken unto me every one of you, and understand:
17. 15BSBNothing that enters a man from the outside can defile him; but the things that come out of a man, these are what defile him.”KJVKJV: There is nothing from without a man, that entering into him can defile him: but the things which come out of him, those are they that defile the man.
18. 16Verse 16 isn’t in the earliest manuscripts. Why?
19. 17BSBAfter Jesus had left the crowd and gone into the house, His disciples inquired about the parable.KJVKJV: And when he was entered into the house from the people, his disciples asked him concerning the parable.
20. 18BSB“Are you still so dull?” He asked. “Do you not understand? Nothing that enters a man from the outside can defile him,KJVKJV: And he saith unto them, Are ye so without understanding also? Do ye not perceive, that whatsoever thing from without entereth into the man, it cannot defile him;
21. 19BSBbecause it does not enter his heart, but it goes into the stomach and then is eliminated.” (Thus all foods are clean.)KJVKJV: Because it entereth not into his heart, but into the belly, and goeth out into the draught, purging all meats?
22. 20BSBHe continued: “What comes out of a man, that is what defiles him.KJVKJV: And he said, That which cometh out of the man, that defileth the man.
23. 21BSBFor from within the hearts of men come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery,KJVKJV: For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders,
24. 22BSBgreed, wickedness, deceit, debauchery, envy, slander, arrogance, and foolishness.KJVKJV: Thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness:
25. 23BSBAll these evils come from within, and these are what defile a man.”KJVKJV: All these evil things come from within, and defile the man.

26. The Faith of the Gentile Woman

    (Matthew 15:21–28)

27. 24BSBJesus left that place and went to the region of Tyre. Not wanting anyone to know He was there, He entered a house, but was unable to escape their notice.KJVKJV: And from thence he arose, and went into the borders of Tyre and Sidon, and entered into an house, and would have no man know it: but he could not be hid.
28. 25BSBInstead, a woman whose little daughter had an unclean spirit soon heard about Jesus, and she came and fell at His feet.KJVKJV: For a certain woman, whose young daughter had an unclean spirit, heard of him, and came and fell at his feet:
29. 26BSBNow she was a Greek woman of Syrophoenician origin, and she kept asking Jesus to drive the demon out of her daughter.KJVKJV: The woman was a Greek, a Syrophenician by nation; and she besought him that he would cast forth the devil out of her daughter.
30. 27BSB“First let the children have their fill,” He said. “For it is not right to take the children’s bread and toss it to the dogs.”KJVKJV: But Jesus said unto her, Let the children first be filled: for it is not meet to take the children’s bread, and to cast it unto the dogs.
31. 28BSB“Yes, Lord,” she replied, “even the dogs under the table eat the children’s crumbs.”KJVKJV: And she answered and said unto him, Yes, Lord: yet the dogs under the table eat of the children’s crumbs.
32. 29BSBThen Jesus told her, “Because of this answer, you may go. The demon has left your daughter.”KJVKJV: And he said unto her, For this saying go thy way; the devil is gone out of thy daughter.
33. 30BSBAnd she went home and found her child lying on the bed, and the demon was gone.KJVKJV: And when she was come to her house, she found the devil gone out, and her daughter laid upon the bed.

34. The Deaf and Mute Man

    (Matthew 9:27–34)

35. 31BSBThen Jesus left the region of Tyre and went through Sidon to the Sea of Galilee and into the region of the Decapolis.KJVKJV: And again, departing from the coasts of Tyre and Sidon, he came unto the sea of Galilee, through the midst of the coasts of Decapolis.
36. 32BSBSome people brought to Him a man who was deaf and hardly able to speak, and they begged Jesus to place His hand on him.KJVKJV: And they bring unto him one that was deaf, and had an impediment in his speech; and they beseech him to put his hand upon him.
37. 33BSBSo Jesus took him aside privately, away from the crowd, and put His fingers into the man’s ears. Then He spit and touched the man’s tongue.KJVKJV: And he took him aside from the multitude, and put his fingers into his ears, and he spit, and touched his tongue;
38. 34BSBAnd looking up to heaven, He sighed deeply and said to him, “Ephphatha!” (which means, “Be opened!”).KJVKJV: And looking up to heaven, he sighed, and saith unto him, Ephphatha, that is, Be opened.
39. 35BSBImmediately the man’s ears were opened and his tongue was released, and he began to speak plainly.KJVKJV: And straightway his ears were opened, and the string of his tongue was loosed, and he spake plain.
40. 36BSBJesus ordered them not to tell anyone. But the more He ordered them, the more widely they proclaimed it.KJVKJV: And he charged them that they should tell no man: but the more he charged them, so much the more a great deal they published it;
41. 37BSBThe people were utterly astonished and said, “He has done all things well! He makes even the deaf hear and the mute speak!”KJVKJV: And were beyond measure astonished, saying, He hath done all things well: he maketh both the deaf to hear, and the dumb to speak.
