1. Vengeance on Midian

2. 1BSBAnd the LORD said to Moses,KJVKJV: And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,
3. 2BSB“Take vengeance on the Midianites for the Israelites. After that, you will be gathered to your people.”KJVKJV: Avenge the children of Israel of the Midianites: afterward shalt thou be gathered unto thy people.
4. 3BSBSo Moses told the people, “Arm some of your men for war, that they may go against the Midianites and execute the LORD’s vengeance on them.KJVKJV: And Moses spake unto the people, saying, Arm some of yourselves unto the war, and let them go against the Midianites, and avenge the LORD of Midian.
5. 4BSBSend into battle a thousand men from each tribe of Israel.”KJVKJV: Of every tribe a thousand, throughout all the tribes of Israel, shall ye send to the war.
6. 5BSBSo a thousand men were recruited from each tribe of Israel—twelve thousand armed for war.KJVKJV: So there were delivered out of the thousands of Israel, a thousand of every tribe, twelve thousand armed for war.
7. 6BSBAnd Moses sent the thousand from each tribe into battle, along with Phinehas son of Eleazar the priest, who took with him the vessels of the sanctuary and the trumpets for signaling.KJVKJV: And Moses sent them to the war, a thousand of every tribe, them and Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest, to the war, with the holy instruments, and the trumpets to blow in his hand.
8. 7BSBThen they waged war against Midian, as the LORD had commanded Moses, and they killed every male.KJVKJV: And they warred against the Midianites, as the LORD commanded Moses; and they slew all the males.
9. 8BSBAmong the slain were Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur, and Reba—the five kings of Midian. They also killed Balaam son of Beor with the sword.KJVKJV: And they slew the kings of Midian, beside the rest of them that were slain; namely, Evi, and Rekem, and Zur, and Hur, and Reba, five kings of Midian: Balaam also the son of Beor they slew with the sword.
10. 9BSBThe Israelites captured the Midianite women and their children, and they plundered all their herds, flocks, and goods.KJVKJV: And the children of Israel took all the women of Midian captives, and their little ones, and took the spoil of all their cattle, and all their flocks, and all their goods.
11. 10BSBThen they burned all the cities where the Midianites had lived, as well as all their encampments,KJVKJV: And they burnt all their cities wherein they dwelt, and all their goodly castles, with fire.
12. 11BSBand carried away all the plunder and spoils, both people and animals.KJVKJV: And they took all the spoil, and all the prey, both of men and of beasts.
13. 12BSBThey brought the captives, spoils, and plunder to Moses, to Eleazar the priest, and to the congregation of Israel at the camp on the plains of Moab, by the Jordan across from Jericho.KJVKJV: And they brought the captives, and the prey, and the spoil, unto Moses, and Eleazar the priest, and unto the congregation of the children of Israel, unto the camp at the plains of Moab, which are by Jordan near Jericho.
14. 13BSBAnd Moses, Eleazar the priest, and all the leaders of the congregation went to meet them outside the camp.KJVKJV: And Moses, and Eleazar the priest, and all the princes of the congregation, went forth to meet them without the camp.
15. 14BSBBut Moses was angry with the officers of the army—the commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds—who were returning from the battle.KJVKJV: And Moses was wroth with the officers of the host, with the captains over thousands, and captains over hundreds, which came from the battle.
16. 15BSB“Have you spared all the women?” he asked them.KJVKJV: And Moses said unto them, Have ye saved all the women alive?
17. 16BSB“Look, these women caused the sons of Israel, through the counsel of Balaam, to turn unfaithfully against the LORD at Peor, so that the plague struck the congregation of the LORD.KJVKJV: Behold, these caused the children of Israel, through the counsel of Balaam, to commit trespass against the LORD in the matter of Peor, and there was a plague among the congregation of the LORD.
18. 17BSBSo now, kill all the boys, as well as every woman who has had relations with a man,KJVKJV: Now therefore kill every male among the little ones, and kill every woman that hath known man by lying with him.
19. 18BSBbut spare for yourselves every girl who has never had relations with a man.KJVKJV: But all the women children, that have not known a man by lying with him, keep alive for yourselves.
20. 19BSBAll of you who have killed a person or touched the dead are to remain outside the camp for seven days. On the third day and the seventh day you are to purify both yourselves and your captives.KJVKJV: And do ye abide without the camp seven days: whosoever hath killed any person, and whosoever hath touched any slain, purify both yourselves and your captives on the third day, and on the seventh day.
21. 20BSBAnd purify every garment and leather good, everything made of goat’s hair, and every article of wood.”KJVKJV: And purify all your raiment, and all that is made of skins, and all work of goats’ hair, and all things made of wood.
22. 21BSBThen Eleazar the priest said to the soldiers who had gone into battle, “This is the statute of the law which the LORD has commanded Moses:KJVKJV: And Eleazar the priest said unto the men of war which went to the battle, This is the ordinance of the law which the LORD commanded Moses;
23. 22BSBOnly the gold, silver, bronze, iron, tin, and lead—KJVKJV: Only the gold, and the silver, the brass, the iron, the tin, and the lead,
24. 23BSBeverything that can withstand the fire—must be put through the fire, and it will be clean. But it must still be purified with the water of purification. And everything that cannot withstand the fire must pass through the water.KJVKJV: Every thing that may abide the fire, ye shall make it go through the fire, and it shall be clean: nevertheless it shall be purified with the water of separation: and all that abideth not the fire ye shall make go through the water.
25. 24BSBOn the seventh day you are to wash your clothes, and you will be clean. After that you may enter the camp.”KJVKJV: And ye shall wash your clothes on the seventh day, and ye shall be clean, and afterward ye shall come into the camp.

26. Division of the Spoils

27. 25BSBThe LORD said to Moses,KJVKJV: And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,
28. 26BSB“You and Eleazar the priest and the family heads of the congregation are to take a count of what was captured, both of man and beast.KJVKJV: Take the sum of the prey that was taken, both of man and of beast, thou, and Eleazar the priest, and the chief fathers of the congregation:
29. 27BSBThen divide the captives between the troops who went out to battle and the rest of the congregation.KJVKJV: And divide the prey into two parts; between them that took the war upon them, who went out to battle, and between all the congregation:
30. 28BSBSet aside a tribute for the LORD from what belongs to the soldiers who went into battle: one out of every five hundred, whether persons, cattle, donkeys, or sheep.KJVKJV: And levy a tribute unto the LORD of the men of war which went out to battle: one soul of five hundred, both of the persons, and of the beeves, and of the asses, and of the sheep:
31. 29BSBTake it from their half and give it to Eleazar the priest as an offering to the LORD.KJVKJV: Take it of their half, and give it unto Eleazar the priest, for an heave offering of the LORD.
32. 30BSBFrom the Israelites’ half, take one out of every fifty, whether persons, cattle, donkeys, sheep, or other animals, and give them to the Levites who keep charge of the tabernacle of the LORD.”KJVKJV: And of the children of Israel’s half, thou shalt take one portion of fifty, of the persons, of the beeves, of the asses, and of the flocks, of all manner of beasts, and give them unto the Levites, which keep the charge of the tabernacle of the LORD.
33. 31BSBSo Moses and Eleazar the priest did as the LORD had commanded Moses,KJVKJV: And Moses and Eleazar the priest did as the LORD commanded Moses.
34. 32BSBand this plunder remained from the spoils the soldiers had taken: 675,000 sheep,KJVKJV: And the booty, being the rest of the prey which the men of war had caught, was six hundred thousand and seventy thousand and five thousand sheep,
35. 33BSB72,000 cattle,KJVKJV: And threescore and twelve thousand beeves,
36. 34BSB61,000 donkeys,KJVKJV: And threescore and one thousand asses,
37. 35BSBand 32,000 women who had not slept with a man.KJVKJV: And thirty and two thousand persons in all, of women that had not known man by lying with him.
38. 36BSBThis was the half portion for those who had gone to war: 337,500 sheep,KJVKJV: And the half, which was the portion of them that went out to war, was in number three hundred thousand and seven and thirty thousand and five hundred sheep:
39. 37BSBincluding a tribute to the LORD of 675,KJVKJV: And the LORD’s tribute of the sheep was six hundred and threescore and fifteen.
40. 38BSB36,000 cattle, including a tribute to the LORD of 72,KJVKJV: And the beeves were thirty and six thousand; of which the LORD’s tribute was threescore and twelve.
41. 39BSB30,500 donkeys, including a tribute to the LORD of 61,KJVKJV: And the asses were thirty thousand and five hundred; of which the LORD’s tribute was threescore and one.

44. 42BSBFrom the Israelites’ half, which Moses had set apart from the men who had gone to war,KJVKJV: And of the children of Israel’s half, which Moses divided from the men that warred,
45. 43BSBthis half belonged to the congregation: 337,500 sheep,KJVKJV: (Now the half that pertained unto the congregation was three hundred thousand and thirty thousand and seven thousand and five hundred sheep,
46. 44BSB36,000 cattle,KJVKJV: And thirty and six thousand beeves,
47. 45BSB30,500 donkeys,KJVKJV: And thirty thousand asses and five hundred,
48. 46BSBand 16,000 people.KJVKJV: And sixteen thousand persons;)
49. 47BSBFrom the Israelites’ half, Moses took one out of every fifty persons and animals and gave them to the Levites who kept charge of the tabernacle of the LORD, as the LORD had commanded him.KJVKJV: Even of the children of Israel’s half, Moses took one portion of fifty, both of man and of beast, and gave them unto the Levites, which kept the charge of the tabernacle of the LORD; as the LORD commanded Moses.

52. 49BSBand said, “Your servants have counted the soldiers under our command, and not one of us is missing.KJVKJV: And they said unto Moses, Thy servants have taken the sum of the men of war which are under our charge, and there lacketh not one man of us.
53. 50BSBSo we have brought to the LORD an offering of the gold articles each man acquired—armlets, bracelets, rings, earrings, and necklaces—to make atonement for ourselves before the LORD.”KJVKJV: We have therefore brought an oblation for the LORD, what every man hath gotten, of jewels of gold, chains, and bracelets, rings, earrings, and tablets, to make an atonement for our souls before the LORD.
54. 51BSBSo Moses and Eleazar the priest received from them all the articles made out of gold.KJVKJV: And Moses and Eleazar the priest took the gold of them, even all wrought jewels.
55. 52BSBAll the gold that the commanders of thousands and of hundreds presented as an offering to the LORD weighed 16,750 shekels.KJVKJV: And all the gold of the offering that they offered up to the LORD, of the captains of thousands, and of the captains of hundreds, was sixteen thousand seven hundred and fifty shekels.
