David Fetches the Ark (2 Samuel 6:1–4)
CPDV Then David took counsel with the tribunes, and the centurions, and all the leaders. BSB BSB: Then David conferred with all his leaders, the commanders of thousands and of hundreds.
CPDV And he said to the entire assembly of Israel: “If it pleases you, and if the words that I speak come from the Lord our God, let us send to the remainder of our brothers, in all the regions of Israel, and to the priests and Levites who live in the suburbs of the cities, so that they may gather to us. BSB BSB: And he said to the whole assembly of Israel, “If it seems good to you, and if this is of the LORD our God, let us send word far and wide to the rest of our brothers in all the land of Israel, and also to the priests and Levites in their cities and pasturelands, so that they may join us.
CPDV And let us bring back the ark of our God to us. For we did not seek it during the days of Saul.” BSB BSB: Then let us bring back the ark of our God, for we did not inquire of Him in the days of Saul.”
CPDV And the entire multitude responded that it should be done. For the word had pleased all the people. BSB BSB: And because this proposal seemed right to all the people, the whole assembly agreed to it.
CPDV Therefore, David gathered all of Israel, from Shihor of Egypt even to the entrance of Hamath, so as to bring the ark of God from Kiriath-jearim. BSB BSB: So David assembled all Israel, from the River Shihor in Egypt to Lebo-hamath, to bring the ark of God from Kiriath-jearim.
CPDV And David ascended with all the men of Israel to the hill of Kiriath-jearim, which is in Judah, so that he might bring from there the ark of the Lord God, sitting upon the Cherubim, where his name is invoked. BSB BSB: David and all Israel went up to Baalah of Judah (that is, Kiriath-jearim) to bring up from there the ark of God the LORD, who is enthroned between the cherubim—the ark that is called by the Name.
CPDV And they placed the ark of God upon a new cart from the house of Abinadab. Then Uzzah and his brother drove the cart. BSB BSB: So they carried the ark of God from the house of Abinadab on a new cart, with Uzzah and Ahio guiding the cart.
Uzzah Touches the Ark (2 Samuel 6:5–11)
CPDV Now David and all of Israel were playing before God, with all of their ability, in songs, and with harps, and psalteries, and timbrels, and cymbals, and trumpets. BSB BSB: David and all the Israelites were celebrating before God with all their might, with songs and on harps and lyres, with tambourines, cymbals, and trumpets.
CPDV And when they had arrived at the threshing floor of Chidon, Uzzah reached out his hand, so that he might support the ark. For indeed, the ox being wanton had caused it to incline a little. BSB BSB: When they came to the threshing floor of Chidon, Uzzah reached out and took hold of the ark, because the oxen had stumbled.
CPDV And David was greatly saddened because the Lord had divided Uzzah. And he called that place ‘the Division of Uzzah,’ even to the present day. BSB BSB: Then David became angry because the LORD had burst forth against Uzzah. So he named that place Perez-uzzah, as it is called to this day.
CPDV And then he feared God, at that time, saying: “How will I be able to bring in the ark of God to myself?” BSB BSB: That day David feared God and asked, “How can I ever bring the ark of God to me?”
CPDV And for this reason, he did not bring it to himself, that is, into the City of David. Instead, he turned aside to the house of Obededom, the Gittite. BSB BSB: So he did not move the ark with him to the City of David; instead, he took it aside to the house of Obed-edom the Gittite.
CPDV Therefore, the ark of God dwelt in the house of Obededom for three months. And the Lord blessed his house and all that he had. BSB BSB: Thus the ark of God remained with the family of Obed-edom in his house for three months, and the LORD blessed his household and everything he owned.
