Children of God 1 CPDV See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we would be called, and would become, the sons of God. Because of this, the world does not know us, for it did not know him. BSB BSB: Behold what manner of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God. And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know Him.
CPDV Most beloved, we are now the sons of God. But what we shall be then has not yet appeared. We know that when he does appear, we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is. BSB BSB: Beloved, we are now children of God, and what we will be has not yet been revealed. We know that when Christ appears, we will be like Him, for we will see Him as He is.
CPDV And everyone who holds this hope in him, keeps himself holy, just as he also is holy. BSB BSB: And everyone who has this hope in Him purifies himself, just as Christ is pure.
CPDV Everyone who commits a sin, also commits iniquity. For sin is iniquity. BSB BSB: Everyone who practices sin practices lawlessness as well. Indeed, sin is lawlessness.
CPDV And you know that he appeared in order that he might take away our sins. For in him there is no sin. BSB BSB: But you know that Christ appeared to take away sins, and in Him there is no sin.
CPDV Everyone who abides in him does not sin. For whoever sins has not seen him, and has not known him. BSB BSB: No one who remains in Him keeps on sinning. No one who continues to sin has seen Him or known Him.
CPDV Little sons, let no one deceive you. Whoever does justice is just, even as he also is just. BSB BSB: Little children, let no one deceive you: The one who practices righteousness is righteous, just as Christ is righteous.
CPDV Whoever commits sin is of the devil. For the devil sins from the beginning. For this reason, the Son of God appeared, so that he might eradicate the works of the devil. BSB BSB: The one who practices sin is of the devil, because the devil has been sinning from the very start. This is why the Son of God was revealed, to destroy the works of the devil.
CPDV All those who have been born of God do not commit sin. For the offspring of God abides in them, and he is not able to sin, because he was born of God. BSB BSB: Anyone born of God refuses to practice sin, because God’s seed abides in him; he cannot go on sinning, because he has been born of God.
CPDV In this way, the sons of God are made manifest, and also the sons of the devil. Everyone who is not just, is not of God, as also anyone who does not love his brother. BSB BSB: By this the children of God are distinguished from the children of the devil: Anyone who does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor is anyone who does not love his brother.
Love One Another (John 13:31–35; Romans 12:9–13)
CPDV For this is the announcement that you heard from the beginning: that you should love one another. BSB BSB: This is the message you have heard from the beginning: We should love one another.
CPDV Do not be like Cain, who was of the evil one, and who killed his brother. And why did he kill him? Because his own works were wicked, but his brother’s works were just. BSB BSB: Do not be like Cain, who belonged to the evil one and murdered his brother. And why did Cain slay him? Because his own deeds were evil, while those of his brother were righteous.
CPDV If the world hates you, brothers, do not be surprised. BSB BSB: So do not be surprised, brothers, if the world hates you.
CPDV Everyone who hates his brother is a murderer. And you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding within him. BSB BSB: Everyone who hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that eternal life does not reside in a murderer.
CPDV We know the love of God in this way: because he laid down his life for us. And so, we must lay down our lives for our brothers. BSB BSB: By this we know what love is: Jesus laid down His life for us, and we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers.
CPDV Whoever possesses the goods of this world, and sees his brother to be in need, and yet closes his heart to him: in what way does the love of God abide in him? BSB BSB: If anyone with earthly possessions sees his brother in need, but withholds his compassion from him, how can the love of God abide in him?
CPDV My little sons, let us not love in words only, but in works and in truth. BSB BSB: Little children, let us love not in word and speech, but in action and truth.
CPDV In this way, we will know that we are of the truth, and we will commend our hearts in his sight. BSB BSB: And by this we will know that we belong to the truth, and will assure our hearts in His presence:
CPDV For even if our heart reproaches us, God is greater than our heart, and he knows all things. BSB BSB: Even if our hearts condemn us, God is greater than our hearts, and He knows all things.
CPDV Most beloved, if our heart does not reproach us, we can have confidence toward God; BSB BSB: Beloved, if our hearts do not condemn us, we have confidence before God,
CPDV and whatever we shall request of him, we shall receive from him. For we keep his commandments, and we do the things that are pleasing in his sight. BSB BSB: and we will receive from Him whatever we ask, because we keep His commandments and do what is pleasing in His sight.
CPDV And this is his commandment: that we should believe in the name of his Son, Jesus Christ, and love one another, just as he has commanded us. BSB BSB: And this is His commandment: that we should believe in the name of His Son, Jesus Christ, and we should love one another just as He commanded us.
CPDV And those who keep his commandments abide in him, and he in them. And we know that he abides in us by this: by the Spirit, whom he has given to us. BSB BSB: Whoever keeps His commandments remains in God, and God in him. And by this we know that He remains in us: by the Spirit He has given us.
