BSB BSB: Then Samuel said to all Israel, “I have listened to your voice in all that you have said to me, and I have set over you a king.
CPDV And now the king advances before you. But I am old and have gray hair. Moreover, my sons are with you. And so, having conversed before you from my youth, even until this day, behold, I am here. BSB BSB: Now here is the king walking before you, and I am old and gray, and my sons are here with you. I have walked before you from my youth until this day.
CPDV Speak about me before the Lord, and before his Christ, as to whether I have taken anyone’s ox or donkey, or whether I have falsely accused anyone, or whether I have oppressed anyone, or whether I have accepted a bribe from the hand of anyone, and I will repudiate the same, this day, and I will restore it to you.” BSB BSB: Here I am. Bear witness against me before the LORD and before His anointed: Whose ox or donkey have I taken? Whom have I cheated or oppressed? From whose hand have I accepted a bribe and closed my eyes? Tell me, and I will restore it to you.”
CPDV And they said, “You have not falsely accused us, nor oppressed us, nor have you taken anything from the hand of anyone.” BSB BSB: “You have not cheated us or oppressed us,” they replied, “nor have you taken anything from the hand of man.”
CPDV And he said to them, “The Lord is a witness against you, and his Christ is a witness this day, that you have not found anything in my hand.” And they said, “He is the witness.” BSB BSB: Samuel said to them, “The LORD is a witness against you, and His anointed is a witness today, that you have not found anything in my hand.” “He is a witness,” they replied.
CPDV And Samuel said to the people: “It is the Lord who appointed Moses and Aaron, and who led our fathers away from the land of Egypt. BSB BSB: Then Samuel said to the people, “The LORD is the One who appointed Moses and Aaron, and who brought your fathers up out of the land of Egypt.
CPDV Now therefore, stand, so that I may contend in judgment against you before the Lord, about all the mercies of the Lord, which he has given to you and to your fathers: BSB BSB: Now present yourselves, so that I may confront you before the LORD with all the righteous acts He has done for you and your fathers.
CPDV How Jacob entered into Egypt, and your fathers cried out to the Lord. And the Lord sent Moses and Aaron, and he led your fathers away from Egypt, and he transferred them to this place. BSB BSB: When Jacob went to Egypt, your fathers cried out to the LORD, and He sent them Moses and Aaron, who brought your fathers out of Egypt and settled them in this place.
CPDV But they forgot the Lord their God, and so he delivered them into the hand of Sisera, master of the army of Hazor, and into the hand of the Philistines, and into the hand of the king of Moab. And they fought against them. BSB BSB: But they forgot the LORD their God, and He sold them into the hand of Sisera the commander of the army of Hazor, and into the hands of the Philistines and the king of Moab, who fought against them.
CPDV But afterward, they cried out to the Lord, and they said: ‘We have sinned, because we have forsaken the Lord, and we have served the Baals and Ashtaroth. Now therefore, rescue us from the hand of our enemies, and we will serve you.’ BSB BSB: Then they cried out to the LORD and said, ‘We have sinned, for we have forsaken the LORD and served the Baals and Ashtoreths. Now deliver us from the hands of our enemies, that we may serve You.’
CPDV And the Lord sent Jerubbaal, and Bedan, and Jephthah, and Samuel, and he rescued you from the hand of your enemies all around, and you lived in confidence. BSB BSB: So the LORD sent Jerubbaal, Barak, Jephthah, and Samuel, and He delivered you from the hands of your enemies on every side, and you dwelt securely.
CPDV Then, seeing that Nahash, the king of the sons of Ammon, had arrived against you, you said to me, ‘By no means! Instead, a king shall reign over us,’ even though the Lord your God was reigning over you. BSB BSB: But when you saw that Nahash king of the Ammonites was moving against you, you said to me, ‘No, we must have a king to rule over us’—even though the LORD your God was your king.
CPDV Now therefore, your king is present, whom you chose and requested. Behold, the Lord has given you a king. BSB BSB: Now here is the king you have chosen, the one you requested. Behold, the LORD has placed a king over you.
CPDV If you will fear the Lord, and serve him, and listen to his voice, and not provoke the mouth of the Lord, then both you, and the king who rules over you, will be following the Lord your God. BSB BSB: If you fear the LORD and serve Him and obey His voice, and if you do not rebel against the command of the LORD, and if both you and the king who rules over you follow the LORD your God, then all will be well.
CPDV But if you will not listen to the voice of the Lord, but instead you provoke his words, then the hand of the Lord will be over you and over your fathers. BSB BSB: But if you disobey the LORD and rebel against His command, then the hand of the LORD will be against you as it was against your fathers.
CPDV Therefore, stand now, and see this great thing, which the Lord will accomplish in your sight. BSB BSB: Now, therefore, present yourselves and see this great thing that the LORD will do before your eyes.
CPDV Is it not the harvest of the wheat today? I will call upon the Lord, and he will send thunder and rain. And you will know and see that you have done a great evil in the sight of the Lord, by petitioning for a king over you.” BSB BSB: Is it not the wheat harvest today? I will call on the LORD to send thunder and rain, so that you will know and see what a great evil you have committed in the sight of the LORD by asking for a king.”
CPDV And Samuel cried out to the Lord, and the Lord sent thunder and rain on that day. BSB BSB: So Samuel called to the LORD, and on that day the LORD sent thunder and rain. As a result, all the people greatly feared the LORD and Samuel.
CPDV And all the people feared the Lord and Samuel exceedingly. And all the people said to Samuel: “Pray, on behalf of your servants, to the Lord your God, so that we may not die. For we have added to all our sins this evil, that we would petition for a king.” BSB BSB: They pleaded with Samuel, “Pray to the LORD your God for your servants so that we will not die! For we have added to all our sins the evil of asking for a king.”
CPDV Then Samuel said to the people: “Do not be afraid. You have done all this evil. Yet truly, do not choose to withdraw from the back of the Lord. Instead, serve the Lord with all your heart. BSB BSB: “Do not be afraid,” Samuel replied. “Even though you have committed all this evil, do not turn aside from following the LORD, but serve the LORD with all your heart.
CPDV And do not choose to turn aside after vanities, which will never benefit you, nor rescue you, since they are empty. BSB BSB: Do not turn aside after worthless things that cannot profit you or deliver you, for they are empty.
CPDV And the Lord will not abandon his people, because of his great name. For the Lord has sworn to make you his people. BSB BSB: Indeed, for the sake of His great name, the LORD will not abandon His people, because He was pleased to make you His own.
CPDV So then, far be it from me, this sin against the Lord, that I would cease to pray for you. And so, I will teach you the good and upright way. BSB BSB: As for me, far be it from me that I should sin against the LORD by ceasing to pray for you. And I will continue to teach you the good and right way.
CPDV Therefore, fear the Lord, and serve him in truth and from your whole heart. For you have seen the great works that he has done among you. BSB BSB: Above all, fear the LORD and serve Him faithfully with all your heart; consider what great things He has done for you.
CPDV But if you persevere in wickedness, both you and your king will perish together.” BSB BSB: But if you persist in doing evil, both you and your king will be swept away.”
