Shishak Raids Jerusalem (1 Kings 14:25–28)
CPDV And when the kingdom of Rehoboam had been strengthened and fortified, he abandoned the law of the Lord, and all of Israel with him. BSB BSB: After Rehoboam had established his sovereignty and royal power, he and all Israel with him forsook the Law of the LORD.
CPDV with one thousand two hundred chariots and sixty thousand horsemen. And the common people could not be numbered who had arrived with him from Egypt, namely, the Libyans, and the Troglodytes, and the Ethiopians. BSB BSB: with 1,200 chariots, 60,000 horsemen, and countless troops who came with him out of Egypt—Libyans, Sukkites, and Cushites.
CPDV And he seized the most fortified cities in Judah, and he went even to Jerusalem. BSB BSB: He captured the fortified cities of Judah and came as far as Jerusalem.
CPDV Then Shemaiah, the prophet, entered to Rehoboam, and to the leaders of Judah who had gathered together in Jerusalem while fleeing from Shishak, and he said to them: “Thus says the Lord: You have abandoned me, and so I have abandoned you into the hand of Shishak.” BSB BSB: Then Shemaiah the prophet came to Rehoboam and the leaders of Judah who had gathered at Jerusalem because of Shishak, and he said to them, “This is what the LORD says: ‘You have forsaken Me; therefore, I have forsaken you into the hand of Shishak.’”
CPDV And the leaders of Israel, and the king, being in consternation, said, “The Lord is just.” BSB BSB: So the leaders of Israel and the king humbled themselves and said, “The LORD is righteous.”
CPDV And when the Lord had seen that they were humbled, the word of the Lord came to Shemaiah, saying: “Because they have been humbled, I will not disperse them. And I will give to them a little help, and my fury will not rain down upon Jerusalem by the hand of Shishak. BSB BSB: When the LORD saw that they had humbled themselves, the word of the LORD came to Shemaiah, saying, “They have humbled themselves; I will not destroy them, but will soon grant them deliverance. My wrath will not be poured out on Jerusalem through Shishak.
CPDV Yet truly, they shall serve him, so that they may know the difference between my servitude, and the servitude of a kingdom of the lands.” BSB BSB: Nevertheless, they will become his servants, so that they may learn the difference between serving Me and serving the kings of other lands.”
CPDV And so Shishak, the king of Egypt, withdrew from Jerusalem, taking up the treasures of the house of the Lord and of the house of the king. And he took away everything with him, even the gold shields that Solomon had made. BSB BSB: So King Shishak of Egypt attacked Jerusalem and seized the treasures of the house of the LORD and of the royal palace. He took everything, including the gold shields that Solomon had made.
CPDV In place of these, the king made bronze ones, and he delivered them to the leaders of the shield bearers, who were guarding the vestibule of the palace. BSB BSB: Then King Rehoboam made bronze shields in their place and committed them to the care of the captains of the guard on duty at the entrance to the royal palace.
CPDV And when the king would enter into the house of the Lord, the shield bearers would arrive and take them, and they would carry them back to their armory. BSB BSB: And whenever the king entered the house of the LORD, the guards would go with him, bearing the shields, and later they would return them to the guardroom.
CPDV Yet truly, because they were humbled, the wrath of the Lord turned away from them, and so they were not utterly destroyed. And indeed, good works were also found in Judah. BSB BSB: Because Rehoboam humbled himself, the anger of the LORD turned away from him, and He did not destroy him completely. Indeed, conditions were good in Judah.
Rehoboam’s Reign and Death (1 Kings 14:21–24)
CPDV Therefore, king Rehoboam was strengthened in Jerusalem, and he reigned. He was forty-one years old when he had begun to reign, and he reigned for seventeen years in Jerusalem, the city that the Lord chose out of all the tribes of Israel, so that he might confirm his name there. Now the name of his mother was Naamah, an Ammonite. BSB BSB: Thus King Rehoboam established himself in Jerusalem and reigned. He was forty-one years old when he became king, and he reigned seventeen years in Jerusalem, the city the LORD had chosen from all the tribes of Israel in which to put His Name. His mother’s name was Naamah the Ammonite.
CPDV But he did evil, and he did not prepare his heart so as to seek the Lord. BSB BSB: And Rehoboam did evil because he did not set his heart to seek the LORD.
CPDV Truly, the works of Rehoboam, the first and the last, have been written in the books of Shemaiah, the prophet, and of Iddo, the seer, and diligently set forth. And Rehoboam and Jeroboam fought against one another during all their days. BSB BSB: Now the acts of Rehoboam, from first to last, are they not written in the records of Shemaiah the Prophet and of Iddo the Seer concerning the genealogies? There was war between Rehoboam and Jeroboam throughout their days.
CPDV And Rehoboam slept with his fathers, and he was buried in the City of David. And his son, Abijah, reigned in his place. BSB BSB: And Rehoboam rested with his fathers and was buried in the City of David. And his son Abijah reigned in his place.
