A Greeting from the Elder (3 John 1:1–4)
1 CPDV The Elder to the Elect Lady, and those born of her, whom I love in the truth: and not I alone, but also all those who have known the truth, BSB BSB: The elder, To the chosen lady and her children, whom I love in the truth—and not I alone, but also all who know the truth—
2 CPDV because the truth which dwells in us shall be with us for eternity. BSB BSB: because of the truth that abides in us and will be with us forever:
3 CPDV May grace, mercy, and peace be with you from God the Father, and from Christ Jesus, the Son of the Father, in truth and in love. BSB BSB: Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and from Jesus Christ, the Son of the Father, will be with us in truth and love.
Walking in the Truth (John 8:30–47)
4 CPDV I was very glad because I discovered some of your sons walking in the truth, just as we received the commandment from the Father. BSB BSB: I was overjoyed to find some of your children walking in the truth, just as the Father has commanded us.
5 CPDV And now I petition you, Lady, not as if writing a new commandment to you, but instead that commandment which we have had from the beginning: that we love one another. BSB BSB: And now I urge you, dear lady—not as a new commandment to you, but one we have had from the beginning—that we love one another.
6 CPDV And this is love: that we walk according to his commandments. For this is the commandment that you have heard in the same way from the beginning, and in which you should walk. BSB BSB: And this is love, that we walk according to His commandments. This is the very commandment you have heard from the beginning, that you must walk in love.
Beware of Deceivers 7 CPDV For many deceivers have gone out into the world, those who do not confess that Jesus Christ has arrived in the flesh. Such a one as this is a deceiver and an antichrist. BSB BSB: For many deceivers have gone out into the world, refusing to confess the coming of Jesus Christ in the flesh. Any such person is the deceiver and the antichrist.
8 CPDV Be cautious for yourselves, lest you lose what you have accomplished, and so that, instead, you may receive a full reward. BSB BSB: Watch yourselves, so that you do not lose what we have worked for, but that you may be fully rewarded.
9 CPDV Everyone who withdraws and does not remain in the doctrine of Christ, does not have God. Whoever remains in the doctrine, such a one as this has both the Father and the Son. BSB BSB: Anyone who runs ahead without remaining in the teaching of Christ does not have God. Whoever remains in His teaching has both the Father and the Son.
10 CPDV If anyone comes to you, and does not bring this doctrine, do not be willing to receive him into the house, and do not speak a greeting to him. BSB BSB: If anyone comes to you but does not bring this teaching, do not receive him into your home or even greet him.
11 CPDV For whoever speaks a greeting to him, is speaking with his evil works. BSB BSB: Whoever greets such a person shares in his evil deeds.
Conclusion (3 John 1:13–14)
12 CPDV I have much more to write to you, but I am not willing to do so through paper and ink. For I hope that I may be with you in the future, and that I may speak face to face, so that your joy may be full. BSB BSB: I have many things to write to you, but I would prefer not to do so with paper and ink. Instead, I hope to come and speak with you face to face, so that our joy may be complete.
13 CPDV The sons of your Elect Sister greet you. BSB BSB: The children of your elect sister send you greetings.
