1. The Coming Judgment

   (Genesis 7:1–24; Jude 1:17–23)

2. 1CPDVConsider, most beloved, this second epistle which I am writing to you, in which I stir up, by admonition, your sincere mind,BSBBSB: Beloved, this is now my second letter to you. Both of them are reminders to stir you to wholesome thinking
3. 2CPDVso that you may be mindful of those words that I preached to you from the holy prophets, and of the precepts of the Apostles of your Lord and Savior.BSBBSB: by recalling what was foretold by the holy prophets and commanded by our Lord and Savior through your apostles.
4. 3CPDVKnow this first: that in the last days there will arrive deceitful mockers, walking according to their own desires,BSBBSB: Most importantly, you must understand that in the last days scoffers will come, scoffing and following their own evil desires.
5. 4CPDVsaying: “Where is his promise or his advent? For from the time that the fathers have slept, all things have continued just as they were from the beginning of creation.”BSBBSB: “Where is the promise of His coming?” they will ask. “Ever since our fathers fell asleep, everything continues as it has from the beginning of creation.”
6. 5CPDVBut they willfully ignore this: that the heavens existed first, and that the earth, from water and through water, was established by the Word of God.BSBBSB: But they deliberately overlook the fact that long ago by God’s word the heavens existed and the earth was formed out of water and by water,
7. 6CPDVBy water, the former world then, having been inundated with water, perished.BSBBSB: through which the world of that time perished in the flood.
8. 7CPDVBut the heavens and the earth that exist now were restored by the same Word, being reserved unto fire on the day of judgment, and unto the perdition of impious men.BSBBSB: And by that same word, the present heavens and earth are reserved for fire, being kept for the day of judgment and destruction of ungodly men.

9. The Day of the Lord

   (Zephaniah 1:7–18; Malachi 4:1–6; 1 Thessalonians 5:1–11)

10. 8CPDVYet truly, let this one thing not escape notice, most beloved, that with the Lord one day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years is like one day.BSBBSB: Beloved, do not let this one thing escape your notice: With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day.
11. 9CPDVThe Lord is not delaying his promise, as some imagine, but he does act patiently for your sake, not wanting anyone to perish, but wanting all to be turned back to penance.BSBBSB: The Lord is not slow in keeping His promise as some understand slowness, but is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish but everyone to come to repentance.
12. 10CPDVThen the day of the Lord shall arrive like a thief. On that day, the heavens shall pass away with great violence, and truly the elements shall be dissolved with heat; then the earth, and the works that are within it, shall be completely burned up.BSBBSB: But the Day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar, the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and its works will be laid bare.
13. 11CPDVTherefore, since all these things will be dissolved, what kind of people ought you to be? In behavior and in piety, be holy,BSBBSB: Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be? You ought to conduct yourselves in holiness and godliness
14. 12CPDVwaiting for, and hurrying toward, the advent of the day of the Lord, by which the burning heavens shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt from the heat of the fire.BSBBSB: as you anticipate and hasten the coming of the day of God, when the heavens will be destroyed by fire and the elements will melt in the heat.
15. 13CPDVYet truly, in accord with his promises, we are looking forward to the new heavens and the new earth, in which justice lives.BSBBSB: But in keeping with God’s promise, we are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth, where righteousness dwells.

16. Final Exhortations

17. 14CPDVTherefore, most beloved, while awaiting these things, be diligent, so that you may be found to be immaculate and unassailable before him, in peace.BSBBSB: Therefore, beloved, as you anticipate these things, make every effort to be found at peace—spotless and blameless in His sight.
18. 15CPDVAnd let the longsuffering of our Lord be considered salvation, as also our most beloved brother Paul, according to the wisdom given to him, has written to you,BSBBSB: Consider also that our Lord’s patience brings salvation, just as our beloved brother Paul also wrote you with the wisdom God gave him.
19. 16CPDVjust as he also spoke in all of his epistles about these things. In these, there are certain things which are difficult to understand, which the unlearned and the unsteady distort, as they also do the other Scriptures, to their own destruction.BSBBSB: He writes this way in all his letters, speaking in them about such matters. Some parts of his letters are hard to understand, which ignorant and unstable people distort, as they do the rest of the Scriptures, to their own destruction.
20. 17CPDVBut since you, brothers, know these things beforehand, be cautious, lest by being drawn into the error of the foolish, you may fall away from your own steadfastness.BSBBSB: Therefore, beloved, since you already know these things, be on your guard so that you will not be carried away by the error of the lawless and fall from your secure standing.
21. 18CPDVYet truly, increase in grace and in the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be glory, both now and in the day of eternity. Amen.BSBBSB: But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To Him be the glory both now and to the day of eternity. Amen.
