Request for Prayer 1 CPDV Concerning other things, brothers, pray for us, so that the Word of God may advance and be glorified, just as it is among you, BSB BSB: Finally, brothers, pray for us, that the word of the Lord may spread quickly and be held in honor, just as it was with you.
CPDV and so that we may be freed from pertinacious and evil men. For not everyone is faithful. BSB BSB: And pray that we may be delivered from wicked and evil men; for not everyone holds to the faith.
CPDV But God is faithful. He will strengthen you, and he will guard you from evil. BSB BSB: But the Lord is faithful, and He will strengthen you and guard you from the evil one.
CPDV And we have confidence about you in the Lord, that you are doing, and will continue to do, just as we have instructed. BSB BSB: And we have confidence in the Lord that you are doing and will continue to do what we command.
CPDV And may the Lord direct your hearts, in the charity of God and with the patience of Christ. BSB BSB: May the Lord direct your hearts into God’s love and Christ’s perseverance.
A Warning against Idleness 6 CPDV But we strongly caution you, brothers, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, to draw yourselves away from every brother who is walking in disorder and not according to the tradition that they received from us. BSB BSB: Now we command you, brothers, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, to keep away from any brother who leads an undisciplined life that is not in keeping with the tradition you received from us.
CPDV For you yourselves know the manner in which you ought to imitate us. For we were not disorderly among you. BSB BSB: For you yourselves know how you ought to imitate us, because we were not undisciplined among you,
CPDV Nor did we eat bread from anyone for free, but rather, we worked night and day, in hardship and weariness, so as not to be burdensome to you. BSB BSB: nor did we eat anyone’s food without paying for it. Instead, in labor and toil, we worked night and day so that we would not be a burden to any of you.
CPDV It was not as if we had no authority, but this was so that we might present ourselves as an example to you, in order to imitate us. BSB BSB: Not that we lack this right, but we wanted to offer ourselves as an example for you to imitate.
CPDV Then, too, while we were with you, we insisted on this to you: that if anyone was not willing to work, neither should he eat. BSB BSB: For even while we were with you, we gave you this command: “If anyone is unwilling to work, he shall not eat.”
CPDV For we have heard that there are some among you who act disruptively, not working at all, but eagerly meddling. BSB BSB: For we hear that some of you are leading undisciplined lives, accomplishing nothing, but being busybodies.
CPDV Now we charge those who act in this way, and we beg them in the Lord Jesus Christ, that they work in silence and eat their own bread. BSB BSB: We command and urge such people by our Lord Jesus Christ to begin working quietly to earn their own living.
CPDV And you, brothers, do not grow weak in doing good. BSB BSB: But as for you, brothers, do not grow weary in well-doing.
CPDV But if anyone does not obey our word by this epistle, take note of him and do not keep company with him, so that he may be ashamed. BSB BSB: Take note of anyone who does not obey the instructions we have given in this letter. Do not associate with him, so that he may be ashamed.
CPDV But do not be willing to consider him as an enemy; instead, correct him as a brother. BSB BSB: Yet do not regard him as an enemy, but admonish him as a brother.
Signature and Final Greetings (1 Corinthians 16:19–24; Colossians 4:15–18)
CPDV Then may the Lord of peace himself give you an everlasting peace, in every place. May the Lord be with all of you. BSB BSB: Now may the Lord of peace Himself give you peace at all times and in every way. The Lord be with all of you.
CPDV The greeting of Paul with my own hand, which is the seal in every epistle. So do I write. BSB BSB: This greeting is in my own hand—Paul. This is my mark in every letter; it is the way I write.
CPDV May the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen. BSB BSB: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with all of you.
