The Covenant in Moab 1 CPDV These are the words of the covenant which the Lord instructed Moses to form with the sons of Israel in the land of Moab, beside that covenant which he struck with them at Horeb. BSB BSB: These are the words of the covenant that the LORD commanded Moses to make with the Israelites in the land of Moab, in addition to the covenant He had made with them at Horeb.
CPDV And Moses called all of Israel, and he said to them: “You have seen all the things that the Lord has done in your sight in the land of Egypt to Pharaoh, and to all his servants, and to his entire land: BSB BSB: Moses summoned all Israel and proclaimed to them, “You have seen with your own eyes everything the LORD did in Egypt to Pharaoh, to all his officials, and to all his land.
CPDV the great trials, which your eyes have seen, those immense signs and wonders. BSB BSB: You saw with your own eyes the great trials, and those miraculous signs and wonders.
CPDV But the Lord has not given you an understanding heart, and seeing eyes, and ears that are able to hear, even to this present day. BSB BSB: Yet to this day the LORD has not given you a mind to understand, eyes to see, or ears to hear.
CPDV He led you for forty years through the desert. Your garments have not been worn out, nor have the shoes on your feet been consumed by age. BSB BSB: For forty years I led you in the wilderness, yet your clothes and sandals did not wear out.
CPDV You did not eat bread, nor did you drink wine or liquor, so that you would know that I am the Lord your God. BSB BSB: You ate no bread and drank no wine or strong drink, so that you might know that I am the LORD your God.
CPDV And you arrived at this place. And Sihon, the king of Heshbon, and Og, the king of Bashan, went out to meet us in battle. And we struck them down. BSB BSB: When you reached this place, Sihon king of Heshbon and Og king of Bashan came out against us in battle, but we defeated them.
CPDV And we took their land and delivered it as a possession to Ruben and to Gad, and to half of the tribe of Manasseh. BSB BSB: We took their land and gave it as an inheritance to the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh.
CPDV Therefore, keep the words of this covenant, and fulfill them, so that you may understand all that you are doing. BSB BSB: So keep and follow the words of this covenant, that you may prosper in all you do.
CPDV Today, you all stand in the sight of the Lord your God: your leaders, and tribes, and those greater by birth, and teachers, all the people of Israel, BSB BSB: All of you are standing today before the LORD your God—you leaders of tribes, elders, officials, and all the men of Israel,
CPDV your children and wives, and the new arrival who dwells with you in the camp, aside from those who cut wood, and those who bring water, BSB BSB: your children and wives, and the foreigners in your camps who cut your wood and draw your water—
CPDV so that you may cross into the covenant of the Lord your God, and into the oath which the Lord your God strikes with you today. BSB BSB: so that you may enter into the covenant of the LORD your God, which He is making with you today, and into His oath,
CPDV So shall he raise you up as a people to himself, and so shall he be your God, just as he has spoken to you, and just as he swore to your fathers: Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. BSB BSB: and so that He may establish you today as His people, and He may be your God as He promised you and as He swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
CPDV And I am not forming this covenant and confirm these oaths with you alone, BSB BSB: I am making this covenant and this oath not only with you,
CPDV but with all those who are present as well as those who are absent. BSB BSB: but also with those who are standing here with us today in the presence of the LORD our God, as well as with those who are not here today.
CPDV For you know how we lived in the land of Egypt, and how we passed through the midst of nations. And when passing through them, BSB BSB: For you yourselves know how we lived in the land of Egypt and how we passed through the nations on the way here.
CPDV you saw their abominations and filth, that is, their idols of wood and of stone, of silver and of gold, which they worshipped, BSB BSB: You saw the abominations and idols among them made of wood and stone, of silver and gold.
CPDV so that there would not be among you man or woman, family or tribe, whose heart has been turned away this day from the Lord our God, so as to go and serve the gods of those nations. For then there would be among you a root springing forth gall and bitterness. BSB BSB: Make sure there is no man or woman, clan or tribe among you today whose heart turns away from the LORD our God to go and worship the gods of those nations. Make sure there is no root among you that bears such poisonous and bitter fruit,
CPDV And if he were to hear the words of this oath, he would bless himself in his own heart saying: ‘There will be peace for me, and I will walk in the depravity of my heart.’ And so, the one who is inebriated would consume the one who is thirsty. BSB BSB: because when such a person hears the words of this oath, he invokes a blessing on himself, saying, ‘I will have peace, even though I walk in the stubbornness of my own heart.’ This will bring disaster on the watered land as well as the dry.
CPDV But the Lord would not ignore him. Instead, at that time, his fury and zealousness would be very greatly enflamed against that man, and all the curses which have been written in this volume would settle upon him. And the Lord would abolish his name from under heaven, BSB BSB: The LORD will never be willing to forgive him. Instead, His anger and jealousy will burn against that man, and every curse written in this book will fall upon him. The LORD will blot out his name from under heaven

CPDV having burned it with sulphur and molten salt, so that it can no longer be sown. And certainly no greenery would spring up, as in the example of the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah, Admah and Zeboiim, which the Lord overturned with his wrath and fury. BSB BSB: All its soil will be a burning waste of sulfur and salt, unsown and unproductive, with no plant growing on it, just like the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah, Admah and Zeboiim, which the LORD overthrew in His fierce anger.
CPDV And so, all the nations would say: ‘Why has the Lord acted this way toward this land? What is this immense wrath of his fury?’ BSB BSB: So all the nations will ask, ‘Why has the LORD done such a thing to this land? Why this great outburst of anger?’
CPDV And they will respond: ‘Because they abandoned the covenant of the Lord, which he formed with their fathers, when he led them away from the land of Egypt.
