The Two Adulterous Sisters 1 CPDV And the word of the Lord came to me, saying: BSB BSB: Again the word of the LORD came to me, saying,
2 CPDV “Son of man, two women were daughters of one mother, BSB BSB: “Son of man, there were two women, daughters of the same mother,
3 CPDV and they fornicated in Egypt; they committed fornication in their youth. In that place, their breasts were conquered; the breasts of their adolescence were subdued. BSB BSB: and they played in Egypt, prostituting themselves from their youth. Their breasts were fondled there, and their virgin bosoms caressed.
4 CPDV Now their names were Oholah, the elder, and Oholibah, her younger sister. And I held them, and they bore sons and daughters. As for their names: Oholah is Samaria, and Oholibah is Jerusalem. BSB BSB: The older was named Oholah, and her sister was named Oholibah. They became Mine and gave birth to sons and daughters. As for their identities, Oholah is Samaria, and Oholibah is Jerusalem.
5 CPDV And then, Oholah committed fornication against me, and she acted madly with her lovers, with the Assyrians who approached her, BSB BSB: Oholah prostituted herself while she was still Mine. She lusted after her lovers, the Assyrians—warriors
6 CPDV who were clothed with hyacinth: rulers and magistrates, passionate youths and all of the horsemen, mounted on horses. BSB BSB: clothed in blue, governors and commanders, all desirable young men, horsemen mounted on steeds.
7 CPDV And she distributed her fornications to those chosen men, all of them sons of the Assyrians. And she defiled herself with the uncleanness of all those whom she madly desired. BSB BSB: She offered sexual favors to all the elite of Assyria. She defiled herself with all the idols of those for whom she lusted.
8 CPDV Moreover, she also did not abandon her fornications, which she had done in Egypt. For they also slept with her in her youth, and they bruised the breasts of her virginity, and they poured out their fornication upon her. BSB BSB: She did not give up the prostitution she began in Egypt, when men slept with her in her youth, caressed her virgin bosom, and poured out their lust upon her.
9 CPDV Because of this, I have delivered her into the hands of her lovers, into the hands of the sons of the Assur, whom she has lustfully desired. BSB BSB: Therefore I delivered her into the hands of her lovers, the Assyrians for whom she lusted.
10 CPDV They uncovered her shame; they took away her sons and daughters; and they slew her with the sword. And they became infamous women. And they carried out judgments in her. BSB BSB: They exposed her nakedness, seized her sons and daughters, and put her to the sword. Thus she became a byword among women, and they executed judgment against her.
11 CPDV And when her sister, Oholibah, had seen this, she was even more mad with lust than the other. And her fornication was beyond the fornication of her sister. BSB BSB: Her sister Oholibah saw this, yet in her lust and prostitution she was more depraved than her sister.
12 CPDV She shamelessly offered herself to the sons of the Assyrians, to the rulers and magistrates who brought themselves to her clothed with colorful garments, to the horsemen who were carried by horses, and to the youths, all of them exceptional in appearance. BSB BSB: She too lusted after the Assyrians—governors and commanders, warriors dressed in splendor, horsemen riding on steeds, all desirable young men.
13 CPDV And I saw that she had been defiled, and that they both took the same path. BSB BSB: And I saw that she too had defiled herself; both of them had taken the same path.
14 CPDV And she increased her fornications. And when she had seen men depicted on the wall, the images of the Chaldeans, expressed in colors, BSB BSB: But Oholibah carried her prostitution even further. She saw the men portrayed on the wall, images of the Chaldeans, engraved in vermilion,
15 CPDV with belts wrapped around the waist, and with dyed headdresses on their heads, having seen the appearance of all the rulers, the likenesses of the sons of Babylon and of the land of the Chaldeans in which they were born, BSB BSB: wearing belts on their waists and flowing turbans on their heads; all of them looked like officers of the Babylonians in Chaldea, the land of their birth.
16 CPDV she became mad for them with the desire of her eyes, and she sent messengers to them in Chaldea. BSB BSB: At the sight of them, she lusted for them and sent messengers to them in Chaldea.
17 CPDV And when the sons of Babylon had gone to her, to the bed of breasts, they defiled her with their fornications, and she was polluted by them, and her soul was gorged by them. BSB BSB: Then the Babylonians came to her, to the bed of love, and in their lust they defiled her. But after she had been defiled by them, she turned away in disgust.
18 CPDV Also, her fornications were uncovered, and her shame was revealed. And my soul withdrew from her, as my soul had withdrawn from her sister. BSB BSB: When Oholibah openly prostituted herself and exposed her nakedness, I turned away from her in disgust, just as I had turned away from her sister.
19 CPDV For she multiplied her fornications, remembering the days of her youth, in which she fornicated in the land of Egypt. BSB BSB: Yet she multiplied her promiscuity, remembering the days of her youth, when she had prostituted herself in the land of Egypt
20 CPDV And she was mad with lust after lying with them, whose flesh is like the flesh of donkeys, and whose flow is like the flow of horses. BSB BSB: and lusted after their lovers, whose genitals were like those of donkeys and whose emission was like that of stallions.
21 CPDV And you have revisited the crimes of your youth, when your breasts were conquered in Egypt, and the breasts of your adolescence were subdued. BSB BSB: So you revisited the indecency of your youth, when the Egyptians caressed your bosom and pressed your young breasts.
Oholibah to Be Plagued 22 CPDV Because of this, Oholibah, thus says the Lord God: Behold, I will raise up against you all of your lovers, with whom your soul has been gorged. And I will gather them together against you all around: BSB BSB: Therefore, Oholibah, this is what the Lord GOD says: ‘I will incite your lovers against you, those from whom you turned away in disgust. And I will bring them against you from every side—
23 CPDV the sons of Babylon, and all the Chaldeans, the nobles, the sovereigns and princes, all the sons of the Assyrians, youths of exceptional form, all the rulers and magistrates, the leaders among leaders, and the renowned riders of horses. BSB BSB: the Babylonians and all the Chaldeans, the men of Pekod, Shoa, and Koa, and all the Assyrians with them—all desirable young men, governors and commanders, officers and men of renown, mounted on horses.
24 CPDV And they will overwhelm you, well-equipped with chariot and wheel, a multitude of peoples. They will be armed against you on every side with armor and shield and helmet. And I will give judgment to their eyes, and they will judge you with their judgments. BSB BSB: They will come against you with a host of peoples, with weapons, chariots, and wagons. They will array themselves against you on every side with buckler and shield and helmet. I will delegate judgment to them, and they will punish you according to their own standards.
25 CPDV And against you, I will set my zeal, which they will execute upon you with fury. They will cut off your nose and your ears. And what remains will fall by the sword. They will seize your sons and your daughters, and your youngest will be devoured by fire. BSB BSB: And I will set My jealous rage against you, and they will deal with you in fury. They will cut off your noses and ears, and your survivors will fall by the sword. They will seize your sons and daughters, and your remnant will be consumed by fire.
26 CPDV And they will strip you of your vestments, and take away the articles of your glory. BSB BSB: They will strip off your clothes and take your fine jewelry.
27 CPDV And I will cause your wickedness to cease from you, and your fornication to cease from the land of Egypt. Neither shall you lift up your eyes toward them, and you shall no longer remember Egypt. BSB BSB: So I will put an end to your indecency and prostitution, which began in the land of Egypt, and you will not lift your eyes to them or remember Egypt anymore.’
28 CPDV For thus says the Lord God: Behold, I will deliver you into the hands of those whom you have hated, into the hands by which your soul has been gorged. BSB BSB: For this is what the Lord GOD says: ‘Surely I will deliver you into the hands of those you hate, from whom you turned away in disgust.
29 CPDV And they will act toward you with hatred, and they will take away all your labors, and they will send you away naked and filled with disgrace. And the shame of your fornication will be revealed: your crimes and your fornications. BSB BSB: They will treat you with hatred, take all for which you have worked, and leave you naked and bare, so that the shame of your prostitution will be exposed. Your indecency and promiscuity
30 CPDV They have done these things to you, because you have fornicated after the Gentiles, among whom you were defiled by their idols. BSB BSB: have brought these things upon you, because you have prostituted yourself with the nations and defiled yourself with their idols.
31 CPDV You have walked in the way of your sister, and so I will give her chalice into your hand. BSB BSB: Because you have followed the path of your sister, I will put her cup into your hand.’
32 CPDV Thus says the Lord God: You will drink the chalice of your sister, deep and wide. You will be held in derision and in ridicule, to a very great extent. BSB BSB: This is what the Lord GOD says: ‘You will drink your sister’s cup, a cup deep and wide. It will bring scorn and derision, for it holds so much.
33 CPDV You will be filled with inebriation and sorrow, by the chalice of grief and sadness, by the chalice of your sister Samaria. BSB BSB: You will be filled with drunkenness and grief, with a cup of devastation and desolation, the cup of your sister Samaria.
34 CPDV And you will drink it, and you will empty it, even to the dregs. And you will consume even its particles. And you will wound your own breasts. For I have spoken, says the Lord God. BSB BSB: You will drink it and drain it; you will dash it to pieces, and tear your breasts. For I have spoken,’ declares the Lord GOD.
35 CPDV Because of this, thus says the Lord God: Since you have forgotten me, and you have cast me behind your body, so also will you bear your wickedness and your fornications.” BSB BSB: Therefore this is what the Lord GOD says: ‘Because you have forgotten Me and have cast Me behind your back, you must bear the consequences of your indecency and prostitution.’”
Judgment on Both Sisters 36 CPDV And the Lord spoke to me, saying: “Son of man, should you not judge Oholah and Oholibah, and announce to them their crimes? BSB BSB: Then the LORD said to me: “Son of man, will you pass judgment against Oholah and Oholibah? Then declare to them their abominations.
37 CPDV For they are adulteresses, and blood is in their hands, and they have fornicated with their idols. Moreover, they have offered even their children, whom they bore for me, to them to be devoured. BSB BSB: For they have committed adultery, and blood is on their hands. They have committed adultery with their idols. They have even sacrificed their children, whom they bore to Me, in the fire as food for their idols.
38 CPDV But they have done even this to me: They have defiled my sanctuary on the same day, and they have profaned my Sabbaths. BSB BSB: They have also done this to Me: On that very same day, they defiled My sanctuary and profaned My Sabbaths.
39 CPDV And when they immolated their children to their idols, they also entered my sanctuary on the same day, so that they defiled it. They have done these things, even in the midst of my house. BSB BSB: On the very day they slaughtered their children for their idols, they entered My sanctuary to profane it. Yes, they did this inside My house.
40 CPDV They sent for men who were coming from far away, to whom they had sent a messenger. And so, behold, they arrived, those for whom you washed yourself, and smeared cosmetics around your eyes, and were adorned with feminine ornaments. BSB BSB: Furthermore, you sisters sent messengers for men who came from afar; and behold, when they arrived, you bathed for them, painted your eyes, and adorned yourself with jewelry.
41 CPDV You sat upon a very beautiful bed, and a table was adorned before you, on which you placed my incense and my ointment. BSB BSB: You sat on a couch of luxury with a table spread before it, on which you had set My incense and My oil,
42 CPDV And the voice of a multitude was exulting within her. And concerning certain men, who were being led out of a multitude of persons, and who were arriving from the desert, they placed bracelets on their hands and beautiful crowns on their heads. BSB BSB: accompanied by the sound of a carefree crowd. Drunkards were brought in from the desert along with men from the rabble, who put bracelets on your wrists and beautiful crowns on your head.
43 CPDV And I said about her, as she was being worn away by her adulteries, ‘Even now, she continues in her fornication!’ BSB BSB: Then I said of her who had grown old in adulteries: ‘Now let them use her as a prostitute, for that is all she is!’
44 CPDV And they entered to her, as if to a kept woman. So did they enter to Oholah and Oholibah, nefarious women. BSB BSB: And they slept with her as with a prostitute; they slept with Oholah and Oholibah, those lewd women.
45 CPDV But there are just men; these shall judge them with the judgment of adulteresses and with the judgment of those who shed blood. For they are adulteresses, and blood is on their hands. BSB BSB: But righteous men will sentence them to the punishment of those who commit adultery and bloodshed, because they are adulteresses with blood on their hands.
46 CPDV For thus says the Lord God: Lead upon them a multitude, and hand them over to tumult and to pillaging. BSB BSB: This is what the Lord GOD says: ‘Bring a mob against them and consign them to terror and plunder.
47 CPDV And may they be stoned with the stones of the peoples, and may they be pierced with their own swords. They will put to death their sons and daughters, and they will burn their houses with fire. BSB BSB: The mob will stone them and cut them down with their swords. They will kill their sons and daughters and burn down their houses.
48 CPDV And I will take away wickedness from the land. And all women shall learn not to act according to their wickedness. BSB BSB: So I will put an end to indecency in the land, and all the women will be admonished not to imitate your behavior.
49 CPDV And they will set your own crimes upon you, and you will bear the sins of your idols. And you shall know that I am the Lord God.” BSB BSB: They will repay you for your indecency, and you will bear the consequences of your sins of idolatry. Then you will know that I am the Lord GOD.’”
