The Portions for the Tribes 1 CPDV “And these are the names of the tribes, from the parts of the north, beside the way of Hethlon, continuing on to Hamath, at the entrance of Enon, to the border of Damascus toward the north, beside the way of Hamath. And from the region of the east to the sea, there will be one portion for Dan. BSB BSB: “Now these are the names of the tribes: At the northern frontier, Dan will have one portion bordering the road of Hethlon to Lebo-hamath and running on to Hazar-enan on the border of Damascus with Hamath to the north, and extending from the east side to the west side.
2 CPDV And beyond the border of Dan, from the eastern region, even to the region of the sea, there shall be one portion for Asher. BSB BSB: Asher will have one portion bordering the territory of Dan from east to west.
3 CPDV And beyond the border of Asher, from the eastern region, even to the region of the sea, there shall be one portion for Naphtali. BSB BSB: Naphtali will have one portion bordering the territory of Asher from east to west.
4 CPDV And beyond the border of Naphtali, from the eastern region, even to the region of the sea, there shall be one portion for Manasseh. BSB BSB: Manasseh will have one portion bordering the territory of Naphtali from east to west.
5 CPDV And beyond the border of Manasseh, from the eastern region, even to the region of the sea, there shall be one portion for Ephraim. BSB BSB: Ephraim will have one portion bordering the territory of Manasseh from east to west.
6 CPDV And beyond the border of Ephraim, from the eastern region, even to the region of the sea, there shall be one portion for Reuben. BSB BSB: Reuben will have one portion bordering the territory of Ephraim from east to west.
7 CPDV And beyond the border of Reuben, from the eastern region, even to the region of the sea, there shall be one portion for Judah. BSB BSB: Judah will have one portion bordering the territory of Reuben from east to west.
The Portions for the Priests and Levites 8 CPDV And beyond the border of Judah, from the eastern region, even to the region of the sea, there shall be the first-fruits, which you shall separate, twenty-five thousand in width, and in length, the same as each one of the portions from the eastern region, even to the region of the sea. And the sanctuary shall be in its midst. BSB BSB: Bordering the territory of Judah, from east to west, will be the portion you are to set apart. It will be 25,000 cubits wide, and the length of a tribal portion from east to west. In the center will be the sanctuary.
9 CPDV The first-fruits, which you shall separate to the Lord, shall be, in length, twenty-five thousand, and in width, ten thousand. BSB BSB: The special portion you set apart to the LORD shall be 25,000 cubits long and 10,000 cubits wide.
10 CPDV And these shall be the first-fruits for the sanctuary of the priests: toward the north, in length, twenty-five thousand, and toward the sea, in width, ten thousand, but also, toward the east, in width, ten thousand, and toward the south, in length, twenty-five thousand. And the sanctuary of the Lord shall be in its midst. BSB BSB: This will be the holy portion for the priests. It will be 25,000 cubits long on the north side, 10,000 cubits wide on the west side, 10,000 cubits wide on the east side, and 25,000 cubits long on the south side. In the center will be the sanctuary of the LORD.
11 CPDV The sanctuary shall be for the priests from the sons of Zadok, who observed my ceremonies and did not go astray, when the sons of Israel went astray, just as the Levites also went astray. BSB BSB: It will be for the consecrated priests, the descendants of Zadok, who kept My charge and did not go astray as the Levites did when the Israelites went astray.
12 CPDV And so the foremost of the first-fruits of the land, the Holy of Holies, beside the border of the Levites, shall be for them. BSB BSB: It will be a special portion for them set apart from the land, a most holy portion adjacent to the territory of the Levites.
13 CPDV But also the Levites, similarly, shall have, beside the borders of the priests, twenty-five thousand in length, and ten thousand in width. The entire length shall be twenty-five thousand, and the width shall be ten thousand. BSB BSB: Bordering the territory of the priests, the Levites shall have an area 25,000 cubits long and 10,000 cubits wide. The whole length will be 25,000 cubits, and the width 10,000 cubits.
14 CPDV And they shall not sell from it, nor exchange, and the first-fruits of the land shall not be transferred. For these have been sanctified to the Lord. BSB BSB: They must not sell or exchange any of it, and they must not transfer this best part of the land, for it is holy to the LORD.
The Common Portion 15 CPDV But the five thousand that is left over, out of the twenty-five thousand in width, will be a profane place of the city for dwelling and for the suburbs. And the city shall be in the center. BSB BSB: The remaining area, 5,000 cubits wide and 25,000 cubits long, will be for common use by the city, for houses, and for pastureland. The city will be in the center of it
16 CPDV And these shall be its measurements: on the northern side, four thousand and five hundred; and on the southern side, four thousand and five hundred; and on the eastern side, four thousand and five hundred; and on the western side, four thousand and five hundred. BSB BSB: and will have these measurements: 4,500 cubits on the north side, 4,500 cubits on the south side, 4,500 cubits on the east side, and 4,500 cubits on the west side.
17 CPDV But the suburbs of the city shall be: to the north, two hundred and fifty; and to the south, two hundred and fifty; and to the east, two hundred and fifty; and to the sea, two hundred and fifty. BSB BSB: The pastureland of the city will extend 250 cubits to the north, 250 cubits to the south, 250 cubits to the east, and 250 cubits to the west.
18 CPDV Now what will remain of the length, in accord with the first-fruits of the sanctuary, ten thousand in the east, and ten thousand in the west, shall be as the first-fruits of the sanctuary. And its produce will be for the bread of those who serve the city. BSB BSB: The remainder of the length bordering the holy portion and running adjacent to it will be 10,000 cubits on the east side and 10,000 cubits on the west side. Its produce will supply food for the workers of the city.
19 CPDV And those who serve the city will be taken from all the tribes of Israel. BSB BSB: The workers of the city who cultivate it will come from all the tribes of Israel.
20 CPDV All the first-fruits, of the twenty-five thousand by twenty-five thousand square, shall be separated as the first-fruits of the sanctuary and as the possession of the city. BSB BSB: The entire portion will be a square, 25,000 cubits by 25,000 cubits. You are to set apart the holy portion, along with the city property.
The Portion for the Prince 21 CPDV And what will remain shall be for the prince out of every portion of the first-fruits of the sanctuary and of the possession of the city, from the region of the twenty-five thousand of the first-fruits, even to the eastern border. But also to the sea from the region of the twenty-five thousand, even to the border of the sea, similarly shall be the portion of the prince. And the first-fruits of the sanctuary, and the sanctuary of the temple, shall be in its center. BSB BSB: The remaining area on both sides of the holy portion and of the property of the city will belong to the prince. He will own the land adjacent to the tribal portions, extending eastward from the 25,000 cubits of the holy district toward the eastern border, and westward from the 25,000 cubits to the western border. And in the center of them will be the holy portion and the sanctuary of the temple.
22 CPDV Now from the possession of the Levites, and from the possession of the city, which are in the midst of the prince’s portions, whatever is between the border of Judah and the border of Benjamin, shall also belong to the prince. BSB BSB: So the Levitical property and the city property will lie in the center of the area belonging to the prince—the area between the borders of Judah and Benjamin.
The Portions for the Remaining Tribes 23 CPDV And for the remainder of the tribes, from the eastern region, even to the western region, there shall be one portion for Benjamin. BSB BSB: As for the rest of the tribes: Benjamin will have one portion extending from the east side to the west side.
24 CPDV And opposite the border of Benjamin, from the eastern region, even to the western region, there shall be one portion for Simeon. BSB BSB: Simeon will have one portion bordering the territory of Benjamin from east to west.
25 CPDV And beyond the border of Simeon, from the eastern region, even to the western region, there shall be one portion for Issachar. BSB BSB: Issachar will have one portion bordering the territory of Simeon from east to west.
26 CPDV And beyond the border of Issachar, from the eastern region, even to the western region, there shall be one portion for Zebulun. BSB BSB: Zebulun will have one portion bordering the territory of Issachar from east to west.
27 CPDV And beyond the border of Zebulun, from the eastern region, even to the region of the sea, there shall be one portion for Gad. BSB BSB: And Gad will have one portion bordering the territory of Zebulun from east to west.
28 CPDV And beyond the border of Gad, toward the southern region, in the meridian, the last part shall be from Tamar, even to the Waters of Contradiction at Kadesh, as the inheritance opposite the great sea. BSB BSB: The southern border of Gad will run from Tamar to the waters of Meribath-kadesh, then along the Brook of Egypt and out to the Great Sea.
29 CPDV This is the land that you shall distribute by lot to the tribes of Israel, and these shall be their portions, says the Lord God. BSB BSB: This is the land you are to allot as an inheritance to the tribes of Israel, and these will be their portions,” declares the Lord GOD.
The City Gates and Dimensions 30 CPDV And these shall be the exits of the city: from the northern region, you shall measure four thousand and five hundred. BSB BSB: “These will be the exits of the city: Beginning on the north side, which will be 4,500 cubits long,
31 CPDV And the gates of the city shall be according to the names of the tribes of Israel. There shall be three gates from the north: the gate of Reuben one, the gate of Judah one, the gate of Levi one. BSB BSB: the gates of the city will be named after the tribes of Israel. On the north side there will be three gates: the gate of Reuben, the gate of Judah, and the gate of Levi.
32 CPDV And to the eastern region, there shall be four thousand and five hundred. And there shall be three gates: the gate of Joseph one, the gate of Benjamin one, the gate of Dan one. BSB BSB: On the east side, which will be 4,500 cubits long, there will be three gates: the gate of Joseph, the gate of Benjamin, and the gate of Dan.
33 CPDV And to the southern region, you shall measure four thousand and five hundred. And there shall be three gates: the gate of Simeon one, the gate of Issachar one, the gate of Zebulun one. BSB BSB: On the south side, which will be 4,500 cubits long, there will be three gates: the gate of Simeon, the gate of Issachar, and the gate of Zebulun.
34 CPDV And to the western region, there shall be four thousand and five hundred, and their three gates: the gate of Gad one, the gate of Asher one, the gate of Naphtali one. BSB BSB: And on the west side, which will be 4,500 cubits long, there will be three gates: the gate of Gad, the gate of Asher, and the gate of Naphtali.
35 CPDV Along the circumference, there shall be eighteen thousand. And the name of the city, from that day, shall be: ‘The Lord is in that very place.’ ” BSB BSB: The perimeter of the city will be 18,000 cubits, and from that day on the name of the city will be: THE LORD IS THERE.”
