Lot Welcomes the Angels (Judges 19:1–30)
CPDV And the two Angels arrived at Sodom in the evening, and Lot was sitting at the gate of the city. And when he had seen them, he rose up and went to meet them. And he reverenced prone on the ground. BSB BSB: Now the two angels arrived at Sodom in the evening, and Lot was sitting in the gateway of the city. When Lot saw them, he got up to meet them, bowed facedown,
CPDV And he said: “I beg you, my lords, turn aside to the house of your servant, and lodge there. Wash your feet, and in the morning you will advance on your way.” And they said, “Not at all. But we will lodge in the street.” BSB BSB: and said, “My lords, please turn aside into the house of your servant; wash your feet and spend the night. Then you can rise early and go on your way.” “No,” they answered, “we will spend the night in the square.”
CPDV He pressed them very much to turn aside to him. And when they had entered his house, he made a feast for them, and he cooked unleavened bread, and they ate. BSB BSB: But Lot insisted so strongly that they followed him into his house. He prepared a feast for them and baked unleavened bread, and they ate.
CPDV But before they went to bed, the men of the city surrounded the house, from boys to old men, all the people together. BSB BSB: Before they had gone to bed, all the men of the city of Sodom, both young and old, surrounded the house.
CPDV And they called out to Lot, and they said to him: “Where are the men who entered to you in the night? Bring them out here, so that we may know them.” BSB BSB: They called out to Lot, saying, “Where are the men who came to you tonight? Send them out to us so we can have relations with them!”
CPDV Lot went out to them, and blocking the door behind him, he said: BSB BSB: Lot went outside to meet them, shutting the door behind him.
CPDV “Do not, I ask you, my brothers, do not be willing to commit this evil. BSB BSB: “Please, my brothers,” he pleaded, “don’t do such a wicked thing!
CPDV But they said, “Move away from there.” And again: “You have entered,” they said, “as a stranger; should you then judge? Therefore, we will afflict you yourself more than them.” And they acted very violently against Lot. And they were now at the point of breaking open the doors. BSB BSB: “Get out of the way!” they replied. And they declared, “This one came here as a foreigner, and he is already acting like a judge! Now we will treat you worse than them.” And they pressed in on Lot and moved in to break down the door.
CPDV And behold, the men put out their hand, and they pulled Lot in to them, and they closed the door. BSB BSB: But the men inside reached out, pulled Lot into the house with them, and shut the door.
CPDV And they struck those who were outside with blindness, from the least to the greatest, so that they were not able to find the door. BSB BSB: And they struck the men at the entrance, young and old, with blindness, so that they wearied themselves trying to find the door.
Lot Flees to Zoar 12 CPDV Then they said to Lot: “Do you have here anyone of yours? All who are yours, sons-in-law, or sons, or daughters, bring them out of this city. BSB BSB: Then the two men said to Lot, “Do you have anyone else here—a son-in-law, your sons or daughters, or anyone else in the city who belongs to you? Get them out of here,
CPDV For we will eliminate this place, because the outcry among them has increased before the Lord, who sent us to destroy them.” BSB BSB: because we are about to destroy this place. For the outcry to the LORD against its people is so great that He has sent us to destroy it.”
CPDV And so Lot, going out, spoke to his sons-in-law, who were going to receive his daughters, and he said: “Rise up. Depart from this place. For the Lord will destroy this city.” And it seemed to them that he was speaking playfully. BSB BSB: So Lot went out and spoke to the sons-in-law who were pledged in marriage to his daughters. “Get up,” he said. “Get out of this place, for the LORD is about to destroy the city!” But his sons-in-law thought he was joking.
CPDV And when it was morning, the Angels compelled him, saying, “Arise, take your wife, and the two daughters that you have, lest you also should perish amid the wickedness of the city.” BSB BSB: At daybreak the angels hurried Lot along, saying, “Get up! Take your wife and your two daughters who are here, or you will be swept away in the punishment of the city.”
CPDV And they brought him out, and placed him beyond the city. And there they spoke to him, saying: “Save your life. Do not look back. Neither should you stay in the entire surrounding region. But save yourself in the mountain, lest you also should perish.” BSB BSB: As soon as the men had brought them out, one of them said, “Run for your lives! Do not look back, and do not stop anywhere on the plain! Flee to the mountains, or you will be swept away!”
CPDV And Lot said to them: “I beg you, my lord, BSB BSB: But Lot replied, “No, my lords, please!
CPDV though your servant has found grace before you, and you have magnified your mercy, which you have shown to me in saving my life, I cannot be saved on the mountain, lest perhaps some misfortune take hold of me and I die. BSB BSB: Your servant has indeed found favor in your sight, and you have shown me great kindness by sparing my life. But I cannot run to the mountains; the disaster will overtake me, and I will die.
CPDV There is a certain city nearby, to which I can flee; it is a little one, and I will be saved in it. Is it not a modest one, and will not my soul live?” BSB BSB: Look, there is a town nearby where I can flee, and it is a small place. Please let me flee there—is it not a small place? Then my life will be saved.”
CPDV And he said to him: “Behold, even now, I have heard your petitions about this, not to overturn the city on behalf of which you have spoken. BSB BSB: “Very well,” he answered, “I will grant this request as well, and will not demolish the town you indicate.
CPDV Hurry and be saved there. For I cannot do anything until you enter there.” For this reason, the name of that city is called Zoar. BSB BSB: Hurry! Run there quickly, for I cannot do anything until you reach it.” That is why the town was called Zoar.
CPDV The sun had risen over the land, and Lot had entered into Zoar. BSB BSB: And by the time the sun had risen over the land, Lot had reached Zoar.
The Destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah (Luke 17:20–37)
CPDV And he overturned these cities, and all the surrounding region: all the inhabitants of the cities, and everything that springs from the land. BSB BSB: Thus He destroyed these cities and the entire plain, including all the inhabitants of the cities and everything that grew on the ground.
CPDV And his wife, looking behind herself, was turned into a statue of salt. BSB BSB: But Lot’s wife looked back, and she became a pillar of salt.
CPDV Then Abraham, rising up in the morning, in the place where he had stood before with the Lord, BSB BSB: Early the next morning, Abraham got up and returned to the place where he had stood before the LORD.
CPDV looked out toward Sodom and Gomorrah, and the entire land of that region. And he saw embers rising up from the land like smoke from a furnace. BSB BSB: He looked down toward Sodom and Gomorrah and all the land of the plain, and he saw the smoke rising from the land like smoke from a furnace.
CPDV For when God overthrew the cities of that region, remembering Abraham, he freed Lot from the overthrow of the cities, in which he had dwelt. BSB BSB: So when God destroyed the cities of the plain, He remembered Abraham, and He brought Lot out of the catastrophe that destroyed the cities where he had lived.
Lot and His Daughters 32 CPDV Come, let us inebriate him with wine, and let us sleep with him, so that we may be able to preserve offspring from our father.” BSB BSB: Come, let us get our father drunk with wine so we can sleep with him and preserve his line.”
CPDV And so they gave their father wine to drink that night. And the elder went in, and she slept with her father. But he did not perceive it, neither when his daughter lay down, nor when she rose up. BSB BSB: So that night they got their father drunk with wine, and the firstborn went in and slept with her father; he was not aware when she lay down or when she got up.
CPDV Likewise, the next day, the elder said to the younger: “Behold, yesterday I slept with my father, let us give him wine to drink yet again this night, and you will sleep with him, so that we may save offspring from our father.” BSB BSB: The next day the older daughter said to the younger, “Look, I slept with my father last night. Let us get him drunk with wine again tonight so you can go in and sleep with him and we can preserve our father’s line.”
CPDV And then they gave their father wine to drink that night also, and the younger daughter went in, and slept with him. And not even then did he perceive when she lay down, or when she rose up. BSB BSB: So again that night they got their father drunk with wine, and the younger daughter went in and slept with him; he was not aware when she lay down or when she got up.
CPDV Therefore, the two daughters of Lot conceived by their father. BSB BSB: Thus both of Lot’s daughters became pregnant by their father.
CPDV And the elder gave birth to a son, and she called his name Moab. He is the father of the Moabites, even to the present day. BSB BSB: The older daughter gave birth to a son and named him Moab. He is the father of the Moabites of today.
CPDV Likewise, the younger gave birth to a son, and she called his name Ammon, that is, ‘the son of my people.’ He is the father of the Ammonites, even today. BSB BSB: The younger daughter also gave birth to a son, and she named him Ben-ammi. He is the father of the Ammonites of today.
