The Offering of Isaac (John 3:1–21)
CPDV And so Abraham, getting up in the night, harnessed his donkey, taking with him two youths, and his son Isaac. And when he had cut wood for the holocaust, he traveled toward the place, as God had instructed him. BSB BSB: So Abraham got up early the next morning, saddled his donkey, and took along two of his servants and his son Isaac. He split the wood for a burnt offering and set out for the place God had designated.
CPDV Then, on the third day, lifting up his eyes, he saw the place at a distance. BSB BSB: On the third day Abraham looked up and saw the place in the distance.
CPDV Isaac said to his father, “My father.” And he answered, “What do you want, son?” “Behold,” he said, “fire and wood. Where is the victim for the holocaust?” BSB BSB: Then Isaac said to his father Abraham, “My father!” “Here I am, my son,” he replied. “The fire and the wood are here,” said Isaac, “but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?”
CPDV And they came to the place that God had shown to him. There he built an altar, and he set the wood in order upon it. And when he had bound his son Isaac, he laid him on the altar upon the pile of wood. BSB BSB: When they arrived at the place God had designated, Abraham built the altar there and arranged the wood. He bound his son Isaac and placed him on the altar, atop the wood.
CPDV And he reached out his hand and took hold of the sword, in order to sacrifice his son. BSB BSB: Then Abraham reached out his hand and took the knife to slaughter his son.
The LORD Provides the Sacrifice 12 CPDV And he said to him, “Do not extend your hand over the boy, and do not do anything to him. Now I know that you fear God, since you have not spared your only begotten son for my sake.” BSB BSB: “Do not lay a hand on the boy or do anything to him,” said the angel, “for now I know that you fear God, since you have not withheld your only son from me.”
CPDV Abraham lifted up his eyes, and he saw behind his back a ram among the thorns, caught by the horns, which he took and offered as a holocaust, instead of his son. BSB BSB: Then Abraham looked up and saw behind him a ram in a thicket, caught by its horns. So he went and took the ram and offered it as a burnt offering in place of his son.
CPDV And he called the name of that place: ‘The Lord Sees.’ Thus, even to this day, it is said: ‘On the mountain, the Lord will see.’ BSB BSB: And Abraham called that place The LORD Will Provide. So to this day it is said, “On the mountain of the LORD it will be provided.”
CPDV Then the Angel of the Lord called out to Abraham a second time from heaven, saying: BSB BSB: And the angel of the LORD called to Abraham from heaven a second time,
CPDV “By my own self, I have sworn, says the Lord. Because you have done this thing, and have not spared your only begotten son for my sake, BSB BSB: saying, “By Myself I have sworn, declares the LORD, that because you have done this and have not withheld your only son,
CPDV I will bless you, and I will multiply your offspring like the stars of heaven, and like the sand which is on the seashore. Your offspring will possess the gates of their enemies. BSB BSB: I will surely bless you, and I will multiply your descendants like the stars in the sky and the sand on the seashore. Your descendants will possess the gates of their enemies.
CPDV And in your offspring, all the nations of the earth will be blessed, because you obeyed my voice.” BSB BSB: And through your offspring all nations of the earth will be blessed, because you have obeyed My voice.”
CPDV Abraham returned to his servants, and they went to Beersheba together, and he lived there. BSB BSB: Abraham went back to his servants, and they got up and set out together for Beersheba. And Abraham settled in Beersheba.
The Sons of Nahor 20 CPDV After these things occurred, it was reported to Abraham that Milcah, likewise, had borne sons for his brother Nahor: BSB BSB: Some time later, Abraham was told, “Milcah has also borne sons to your brother Nahor:
CPDV Uz, the firstborn, and Buz, his brother, and Kemuel, the father of the Syrians, BSB BSB: Uz the firstborn, his brother Buz, Kemuel (the father of Aram),
CPDV and Chesed, and Hazo, likewise Pildash, and Jidlaph, BSB BSB: Chesed, Hazo, Pildash, Jidlaph, and Bethuel.”
CPDV as well as Bethuel, of whom was born Rebekah. These eight Milcah bore for Nahor, the brother of Abraham. BSB BSB: And Bethuel became the father of Rebekah. Milcah bore these eight sons to Abraham’s brother Nahor.
CPDV In truth, his concubine, named Reumah, bore Tebah, and Gaham, and Tahash, and Maacah. BSB BSB: Moreover, Nahor’s concubine, whose name was Reumah, bore Tebah, Gaham, Tahash, and Maacah.
