The Perfect High Priest (Psalm 110:1–7)
CPDV For every high priest, having been taken from among men, is appointed on behalf of men toward the things which pertain to God, so that he may offer gifts and sacrifices on behalf of sins; BSB BSB: Every high priest is appointed from among men to represent them in matters relating to God, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins.
CPDV he is able to commiserate with those who are ignorant and who wander astray, because he himself is also encompassed by infirmity. BSB BSB: He is able to deal gently with those who are ignorant and misguided, since he himself is subject to weakness.
CPDV And because of this, he also must make such offerings for sins even for himself, in the same manner as for the people. BSB BSB: That is why he is obligated to offer sacrifices for his own sins, as well as for the sins of the people.
CPDV Neither does anyone take up this honor himself, but rather he who is called by God, just as Aaron was. BSB BSB: No one takes this honor upon himself; he must be called by God, just as Aaron was.
CPDV Thus, even Christ did not glorify himself, so as to become High Priest, but instead, it was God who said to him: “You are my Son. Today I have begotten you.” BSB BSB: So also Christ did not take upon Himself the glory of becoming a high priest, but He was called by the One who said to Him: “You are My Son; today I have become Your Father.”
CPDV And similarly, he says in another place: “You are a priest forever, according to the order of Melchizedek.” BSB BSB: And in another passage God says: “You are a priest forever in the order of Melchizedek.”
CPDV It is Christ who, in the days of his flesh, with a strong cry and tears, offered prayers and supplications to the One who was able to save him from death, and who was heard because of his reverence. BSB BSB: During the days of Jesus’ earthly life, He offered up prayers and petitions with loud cries and tears to the One who could save Him from death, and He was heard because of His reverence.
CPDV And although, certainly, he is the Son of God, he learned obedience by the things that he suffered. BSB BSB: Although He was a Son, He learned obedience from what He suffered.
CPDV And having reached his consummation, he was made, for all who are obedient to him, the cause of eternal salvation, BSB BSB: And having been made perfect, He became the source of eternal salvation to all who obey Him
CPDV having been called by God to be the High Priest, according to the order of Melchizedek. BSB BSB: and was designated by God as high priest in the order of Melchizedek.
Milk and Solid Food (1 Corinthians 3:1–9)
CPDV Our message about him is great, and difficult to explain when speaking, because you have been made feeble when listening. BSB BSB: We have much to say about this, but it is hard to explain, because you are dull of hearing.
CPDV For even though it is the time when you ought to be teachers, you are still lacking, so that you must be taught the things that are the basic elements of the Word of God, and so you have been made like those who are in need of milk, and not of solid food. BSB BSB: Although by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to reteach you the basic principles of God’s word. You need milk, not solid food!
CPDV For anyone who is still feeding on milk is still unskillful in the Word of Justice; for he is like an infant. BSB BSB: For everyone who lives on milk is still an infant, inexperienced in the message of righteousness.
CPDV But solid food is for those who are mature, for those who, by practice, have sharpened their mind, so as to discern good from evil. BSB BSB: But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained their senses to distinguish good from evil.
