Christ’s Eternal Priesthood 1 CPDV Now the main point in the things that have been stated is this: that we have so great a High Priest, who is seated at the right hand of the throne of Majesty in the heavens, BSB BSB: The point of what we are saying is this: We do have such a high priest, who sat down at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in heaven,
CPDV who is the minister of holy things, and of the true tabernacle, which was established by the Lord, not by man. BSB BSB: and who ministers in the sanctuary and true tabernacle set up by the Lord, not by man.
CPDV For every high priest is appointed to offer gifts and sacrifices. Therefore, it is necessary for him also to have something to offer. BSB BSB: And since every high priest is appointed to offer both gifts and sacrifices, it was necessary for this One also to have something to offer.
CPDV And so, if he were upon the earth, he would not be a priest, since there would be others to offer gifts according to the law, BSB BSB: Now if He were on earth, He would not be a priest, since there are already priests who offer gifts according to the law.
CPDV gifts which serve as mere examples and shadows of the heavenly things. And so it was answered to Moses, when he was about to complete the tabernacle: “See to it,” he said, “that you make everything according to the example which was revealed to you on the mountain.” BSB BSB: The place where they serve is a copy and shadow of what is in heaven. This is why Moses was warned when he was about to build the tabernacle: “See to it that you make everything according to the pattern shown you on the mountain.”
The New Covenant (Jeremiah 31:26–40)
CPDV But now he has been granted a better ministry, so much so that he is also the Mediator of a better testament, which has been confirmed by better promises. BSB BSB: Now, however, Jesus has received a much more excellent ministry, just as the covenant He mediates is better and is founded on better promises.
CPDV For if the former one had been entirely without fault, then a place certainly would not have been sought for a subsequent one. BSB BSB: For if that first covenant had been without fault, no place would have been sought for a second.
CPDV not according to the testament which I made with their fathers, on the day when I took them by the hand, so that I might lead them away from the land of Egypt. For they did not remain in my testament, and so I disregarded them, says the Lord. BSB BSB: It will not be like the covenant I made with their fathers when I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt, because they did not abide by My covenant, and I disregarded them, declares the Lord.
CPDV For this is the testament which I will set before the house of Israel, after those days, says the Lord. I will instill my laws in their minds, and I will inscribe my laws on their hearts. And so, I will be their God, and they shall be my people. BSB BSB: For this is the covenant I will make with the house of Israel after those days, declares the Lord. I will put My laws in their minds and inscribe them on their hearts. And I will be their God, and they will be My people.
CPDV And they will not teach, each one his neighbor, and each one his brother, saying: ‘Know the Lord.’ For all shall know me, from the least, even to the greatest of them. BSB BSB: No longer will each one teach his neighbor or his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’ because they will all know Me, from the least of them to the greatest.
CPDV For I will forgive their iniquities, and I will no longer remember their sins.” BSB BSB: For I will forgive their iniquities and will remember their sins no more.”
CPDV Now in saying something new, he has made the former old. But that which decays and grows old is close to passing away. BSB BSB: By speaking of a new covenant, He has made the first one obsolete; and what is obsolete and aging will soon disappear.
