Israel Will Reap the Whirlwind 1 CPDV Let there be a trumpet in your throat, like an eagle over the house of the Lord, on behalf of those who have transgressed my covenant and violated my law. BSB BSB: Put the ram’s horn to your lips! An eagle looms over the house of the LORD, because the people have transgressed My covenant and rebelled against My law.
CPDV They will call on me: “O my God, we, Israel, know you.” BSB BSB: Israel cries out to Me, “O our God, we know You!”
CPDV Israel has thrown away goodness; the enemy will overtake him. BSB BSB: But Israel has rejected good; an enemy will pursue him.
CPDV They have reigned, but not by me. Leaders have emerged, and I did not recognize them. Their silver and their gold, they have made into idols for themselves, so that they might cross over. BSB BSB: They set up kings, but not by Me. They make princes, but without My approval. With their silver and gold they make themselves idols, to their own destruction.
CPDV Your calf, Samaria, has been rejected. My fury has been enraged against them. How long will they be incapable of being cleansed? BSB BSB: He has rejected your calf, O Samaria. My anger burns against them. How long will they be incapable of innocence?
CPDV For it is itself also from Israel: a workman made it, and it is not God. For the calf of Samaria will be used for the webs of spiders. BSB BSB: For this thing is from Israel—a craftsman made it, and it is not God. It will be broken to pieces, that calf of Samaria.
CPDV For they will sow wind and reap a whirlwind. It does not have a firm stalk; the bud will yield no grain. But if it does yield, strangers will eat it. BSB BSB: For they sow the wind, and they shall reap the whirlwind. There is no standing grain; what sprouts fails to yield flour. Even if it should produce, the foreigners would swallow it up.
CPDV Israel has been devoured. Now, among the nations, it has become like an unclean vessel. BSB BSB: Israel is swallowed up! Now they are among the nations like a worthless vessel.
CPDV For they have gone up to Assur, a wild ass alone by himself. Ephraim has given presents to his lovers. BSB BSB: For they have gone up to Assyria like a wild donkey on its own. Ephraim has hired lovers.
CPDV But even when they will have brought the nations together for the sake of money, now I will assemble them. And they will rest for a little while from the burden of the king and the leaders. BSB BSB: Though they hire allies among the nations, I will now round them up, and they will begin to diminish under the oppression of the king of princes.
CPDV For Ephraim multiplied altars to sin, and sanctuaries have become an offense for him. BSB BSB: Though Ephraim multiplied the altars for sin, they became his altars for sinning.
CPDV I will write to him my intricate laws, which have been treated like strangers. BSB BSB: Though I wrote for them the great things of My law, they regarded them as something strange.
CPDV They will offer victims, they will immolate flesh and will eat, and the Lord will not accept them. For now he will remember their iniquity, and he will repay their sins: they will be turned back to Egypt. BSB BSB: Though they offer sacrifices as gifts to Me, and though they eat the meat, the LORD does not accept them. Now He will remember their iniquity and punish their sins: They will return to Egypt.
CPDV And Israel has forgotten his Maker and has built shrines. And Judah has increased its fortified cities. And I will send fire upon his cities, and it will devour its structures. BSB BSB: Israel has forgotten his Maker and built palaces; Judah has multiplied its fortified cities. But I will send fire upon their cities, and it will consume their citadels.
