The Burden against Tyre (Ezekiel 26:1–21)
CPDV The burden of Tyre. Wail, you ships of the sea! For the house, from which they were accustomed to go forth, has been laid waste. From the land of Kittim, this has been revealed to them. BSB BSB: This is the burden against Tyre: Wail, O ships of Tarshish, for Tyre is laid waste, without house or harbor. Word has reached them from the land of Cyprus.
CPDV Be silent, you inhabitants of the island! The merchants of Sidon, crossing over the sea, have filled you. BSB BSB: Be silent, O dwellers of the coastland, you merchants of Sidon, whose traders have crossed the sea.
CPDV The offspring of the Nile is in the midst of many waters. The harvest of the river is her crop. And she has become the marketplace of the nations. BSB BSB: On the great waters came the grain of Shihor; the harvest of the Nile was the revenue of Tyre; she was the merchant of the nations.
CPDV Be ashamed, O Sidon! For the sea speaks, the strength of the sea, saying: “I have not been in labor, and I have not given birth, and I have not raised young men, nor have I promoted the development of virgins.” BSB BSB: Be ashamed, O Sidon, the stronghold of the sea, for the sea has spoken: “I have not been in labor or given birth. I have not raised young men or brought up young women.”
CPDV When it has been heard in Egypt, they will be in anguish, when they hear of Tyre. BSB BSB: When the report reaches Egypt, they will writhe in agony over the news of Tyre.
CPDV Cross over the seas. Wail, you inhabitants of the island! BSB BSB: Cross over to Tarshish; wail, O inhabitants of the coastland!
CPDV Is this not your place, which from its earliest days has gloried in its antiquity? Her feet will lead her to a sojourn far away. BSB BSB: Is this your jubilant city, whose origin is from antiquity, whose feet have taken her to settle far away?
CPDV Who has made this plan against Tyre, which formerly was crowned, whose merchants were leaders, whose traders were illustrious on the earth? BSB BSB: Who planned this against Tyre, the bestower of crowns, whose traders are princes, whose merchants are renowned on the earth?
CPDV The Lord of hosts has planned this, so that he may tear down the arrogance of all glory, and may bring disgrace to all the illustrious of the earth. BSB BSB: The LORD of Hosts planned it, to defile all its glorious beauty, to disgrace all the renowned of the earth.
CPDV Cross through your land, as through a river, O daughter of the sea. You no longer have a belt. BSB BSB: Cultivate your land like the Nile, O Daughter of Tarshish; there is no longer a harbor.
CPDV He has extended his hand over the sea. He has stirred up kingdoms. The Lord has given an order against Canaan, so that he may crush its strong. BSB BSB: The LORD has stretched out His hand over the sea; He has made kingdoms tremble. He has given a command that the strongholds of Canaan be destroyed.
CPDV And he said: “You shall no longer increase so as to glory, while enduring calumny, O virgin daughter of Sidon. Rise up and set sail for Kittim; in that place, too, there will be no rest for you.” BSB BSB: He said, “You shall rejoice no more, O oppressed Virgin Daughter of Sidon. Get up and cross over to Cyprus—even there you will find no rest.”
CPDV Behold, the land of the Chaldeans: never before was there such a people! Assur founded it. They have led away its strong ones into captivity. They have dug under its houses. They have left it in ruins. BSB BSB: Look at the land of the Chaldeans—a people now of no account. The Assyrians destined it for the desert creatures; they set up their siege towers and stripped its palaces. They brought it to ruin.
CPDV Wail, you ships of the sea! For your strength has been devastated. BSB BSB: Wail, O ships of Tarshish, for your harbor has been destroyed!
CPDV And this shall be in that day: you, O Tyre, will be forgotten for seventy years, like the days of one king. Then, after seventy years, there will be, for Tyre, something like the canticle of a harlot. BSB BSB: At that time Tyre will be forgotten for seventy years—the span of a king’s life. But at the end of seventy years, it will happen to Tyre as in the song of the harlot:
CPDV Take up a stringed instrument. Circulate through the city, you harlot who had been forgotten. Sing many canticles well, so that you may be remembered. BSB BSB: “Take up your harp, stroll through the city, O forgotten harlot. Make sweet melody, sing many a song, so you will be remembered.”
CPDV And this shall be after seventy years: the Lord will visit Tyre, and he will lead her back to her profits. And she will fornicate again with all the kingdoms of the world upon the face of the earth. BSB BSB: And at the end of seventy years, the LORD will restore Tyre. Then she will return to hire as a prostitute and sell herself to all the kingdoms on the face of the earth.
CPDV And her businesses and her profits will be sanctified to the Lord. They will not be locked away and they will not be stored. For her business will be for those who will live in the presence of the Lord, so that they may eat until satisfied, and may be well-clothed even into old age. BSB BSB: Yet her profits and wages will be set apart to the LORD; they will not be stored or saved, for her profit will go to those who live before the LORD, for abundant food and fine clothing.
